Vaughan Roofing Hatchet garage sale find
on: April 29, 2026, 09:24:12 PM
I went to a friend's garage sale on Saturday, and he put out this 22-ounce Vaughan roofing hatchet which I immediately expressed interest in, so he gave it to me.  I do not build or repair wooden shingle roofs, but for some inexplicable reason I have been wanting a roofing hatchet.  I certainly couldn't argue with the price.

I mean, a tool that is both a hatchet and a hammer is a handy thing to have, whether you work on roofs or not!

Nice find!  I bought an old Stihl 024 chainsaw from a local guy a while back.  Got a Stanley axe (marked with an M), a Stanley Maul, two Liddell wedges and a Truper  "Shingler's Hammer" I believe these are called.  This Truper was made in Mexico and has a hexagonal or octagonal hammer head with the Shingler's hatchet other end

Better, more correct name for these is "half-hatchet" because the hatchet side bit is flattened at the top.  Used to drive nails into a ceiling, along the line of the wall, so as not to scuff the wall with a full bit hatchet.
