Question about Maglite upgrades
on: March 02, 2009, 09:28:12 PM
Received my L2d0 today (ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG) and finally impressed my dad with LED technology. He has now requested I upgrade his 2D Maglite with a LED bulb. Now...

I know everything I need to know about Nite Ize. The question is, which throw a better (longer) beam: official Maglite drop-ins, or Terralux Crees? I'm talking about the 140 lumen one, not the... other one.  :o

I think it has more to do with the shape of the reflector than the LED.  But more lumens can't be a bad thing.

The TerraLUX would be the better one to get.

I recommend Malkoff or Maglite LED upgrade.

+1 (I have had both and am currently using the Malkoff in two of my Mags a 3D and 4D)

The seperately available magLED drop in still use luxeon III emitter and is half the output of terralux, now if you know how to replace it with SSC emitter it'll give terralux some good competition.

I'm not a big fan of malkoff's mag drop in, it's good quality but a pain to focus/defocus.

Thanks for all your input. I have another question: do Xenon lamps produce a whiter beam, or are they the same as incandescent, just brighter?

Xenon seems to be a little bit whiter/brighter than a standard bulb. Personally, I would skip the incandescent bulbs and at minimum throw in a MagLED drop-in.

Now, back to the MagLED  and Malkoff drop in's.

The MagLED drop-in's I really liked because:
1) It is readily available, thus returnable if you have a problem.
2) Long run time.
3) More durable than incandescent bulb.
4) Decent throw and brightness.
5) Focusable.
6) Easy drop in.

The Malkoff drop-in's I really like because:
1) Well made and durable.
2) Decent run time, though much less than the MagLED.
3) Still focusable, but like jzmtl stated, it isn't flawless.
4) Very good throw and brightness.
5) Easy drop in.

I have  the Nite Ize upgrade in my mini Mag light i am very happy with it. I was walking though Walmart a few months ago and found Mag lite LED upgrades for my two and three D Mag-lites for 2.00 each on clearance i am also happy with those. I sure am buying a lot less batteries these days.

I think Alcohol, Tabacco and Firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency.
