I have a SwissTool, but no Spirit. If I were to get one I think I'd go for the X variety, but the SwissTool is so shiny and perfect I find myself not using it so as not to sully it's gleam. I'm afraid I'd be even worse with the Spirit, so I have held off, but the urge is bugging me.
If there ever were tools that were "too nice to actually use", I think the Vic plier-based tools would win, hands down.
Enablers out there: if there's an easy way to get over the "perfection" hump, and actually used the tool, let me know. (Don't say "just buy two, one to use, the other to polish)
 ;) ;)

Buy used Spirit. One that has use marks and scratches on it... It is easier to take it in use.

Either that, or scar it yourself, of course that brings up the whole issue of not wanting to harm it through use to begin with.  So I guess disregard that suggestion ;)  Although, if you didn't want to buy a used one and prefer new, then that would be the solution, but then you may as well just use it anyway instead of just intentionally harming the finish.  So again, disregard

I bought mine used. It didn't have a mark on it. It is beautiful and shiny, but that doesn't stop me from using it. Think of it as a brand new shiny sports car sitting in your garage. You gotta drive it.

I bought a few used Swisstools and surprisingly they are still very shiny albeit they have mars on them.  I posted a picture though I can't remember in what thread that had seen better days and actually had a broken serrated blade.  This Swisstool was still very shiny and once cleaned looked great.

Think of how wonderful you will feel using the tool as opposed to how bad you will feel marring the finish ( which would really be hard to do ).  You can always polish the tool down the road if the tool gets too bad.  Go for it, use it and feel amazing carrying and using that gleaming beautiful tool of yours  :pok:  :D

I can see the Spirit will take a lot of daily hard use to show any character, patina, battle scars, whatever you call it, but all the tools I treasure most have that very thing. I do like to buy new and know where all the character came from, but I think these tools are so sturdy that a used one should perform just fine, as long as it's just used and not abused. Think of all the SAK's that have been handed down for generations, or those alox soldiers that come up for auction that, if they could talk, what a story they would tell... :tu:

I EDC mine and use it, with no remorse. It is more tough than it seems (all Vics are). In a nutsell, you might buy two, one to use and one to fondle.  :tu:

I didn't say get 2...

But I do generally try to have 2 of whatever I'm going to carry, one for the collection or as a spare in case of loss, theft, etc. I don't tend to carry rare or expensive models, with the exception of the Deluxe Climber, which is only a little rare, but I have 5 of those now.

Spirit count 2, one user, one collection piece. Er, so far... :P

Nice! I like the snap pouch, wherever did you find that? All I can find in Vic pouches with snap are nylon and 91mm leather ones.

The black Spirit without the cap crimper is cool too, and hard to find it seems...

The pouch with the snap closure is the one that comes with the RT Spirit.

I didn't like the velcro pouches either at first, but I've been using them for a couple of years now and they haven't failed me once, and the velcro closure is still in very good shape (and they do look very nice, in my opinion).

@ u99: nice family shots my friend, I just love the last one with the Spirits on top of each other, very nice .

Thanks TG, good to know. :salute:

I tried a velcro pouch for a very short time with my OHT, and the one that came with my Spirit looks great and works great, but the ripping sound drives me out of my tree.  :ahhh

I may have to start looking for an RT, and this leads to...

There's a few miles on the original now, not a single problem or complaint, a great tool, super happy with it. :)

For some strange reason I always find myself opening the large flat screwdriver on the Spirit (like your pic), one of my favorite tools on the Spirit, flat screwdriver, pry bar, bottle opener ... all in one.  The thickness of that tool makes it look so nice ... (much nicer than the one on the Swisstool in my view).

I can just open and close it time and time again, just love the feel of how it locks, and unlocks ...

I know, I know ...

Yep, me too, the most used tool on my Spirit and OHT both. :tu: I used the 91mm version a lot too, but the locking ones get more severe and therefore more use altogether.

I guess I do a lot of prying and scraping stuff?  ??? lol

I'm in - my new Spirit Plus:

This thing is lovely.  The serrated sheep's foot blade is interesting - never been keen on serrated blades but I'll test this one for a while and see how it goes.  Doesn't feel like as much of a knockabout tool as the Rebar but the tools and folding action are better than my Leatherman tools and so so shiny.  Outside opening blades are nice but the pouch is naff.

The best bit:

With 30% off that.  £62.30! :tu:

I personally really like the Vic serrations... Perfect for every day tasks like box cutting and opening packages, but they aren't so aggressive they get in the way of cutting other stuff. Exactly right, I'd say :tu: Wicked sharp, too :)
