Gerber screwdriver change
on: April 11, 2009, 02:43:42 PM
As I was using the Phillips driver on my Gerber Diesel a few days ago, I learned that because of the flat shape of the driver I could not "start" a screw in a piece of wood.
After comparing, I disassembled the drivers and swapped the Phillips with the driver from a MP600.  (An older E-Bay purchase)

Other than the chore of getting those tiny anti-clump (new word?) washers back to their proper place it went well.  Plus, I can still use either driver kit with the Diesel now.
I also gave up the smallest straight driver, no big deal anyway as I always have a SAK Explorer on deck.

I don't know how to post pictures, but you guys will get the idea I'm sure.  Whadda ya think?   :)

So let me make sure I got this straight; you took out the small straight screwdriver and the original flat phillips, and replaced them with a square phillips? Everything fit and functioned fine?

Cool! :tu:

I really don't like that flat phillips driver that Gerber uses on the Deisel and Flik. I'm glad the mod fixed it for you.

Yes, indeed.  Both MTs work fine, just the old MP 600 now has a flat, worthless, Phillips and 2 small screwdrivers.

I did this to my Diesel as well after the flat Phillips stripped out on its first use.

I also added the blade exchanger from a Pro Scout and swapped the blade. That Diesel blade I felt was too fragile and I prefer the Scout blade.

With those mods, I think the Diesel is a fine tool now. Shame it took my own fiddling to make it a solid mt though.

Great work there. Somehow the tool makers might eventually get the idea with all these mods going on that maybe they ought to do some revamping on their products
