Wenger Esquire Serrated....
on: March 18, 2009, 05:04:51 AM
I just picked up a rather interesting little keyring SAK, a Wenger Esquire, this one has a serrated main blade, with a Spyerco-esque 2 small 1 large serration pattern

the main blade is exceptionally thin, and sharpens up to a hair-poppingly sharp edge, and the serrations cut smoothly, it's actually a pretty nice little SAK, I've always looked down on Wengers as being just slightly "inferior" to Victorinox, but I may have to revise that view, this little Esquire's walk-and-talk is right up there with my Vic Midnight MiniChamp, plus it has the advantage of a slightly longer main blade, and the superior scissor design that Wenger is known for

comparing the cutting performance tool-for-tool, the Esquire's spearpoint blade cuts a *tad* smoother than the MiniChamp's, however, the serrated Wenger scissors cut less smoothly than the plain-edged Vic scissors, but I'd imagine they'd handle more fibrous and/or more difficult materials better than the Vic scissors, I do like the backspring-driven design of the Wenger better than the springloaded Vic scissors for their durability though, the Vic scissors cut cleaner, but the Wenger's are more durable

Maybe I should check out the other Wenger designs as well

So, how rare are the serrated models, I don't see them listed on the Wenger website...

I would call them "uncommon" or hard to find. You can find them and most folks who look for them will pay a tad more for them. I have a Titanium Serrated Wenger Esquire and a couple other plain serrated esquires. Neat little blades.

Does anyone know where I can get a Wenger catalog that featured the serrated blades? I think it was from around '99-01.

Wenger makes quite a few 85mm size SAK's with serrated or partially serrated main blades. Check out the SAKWicki website for a few.

These are just a few from the 85mm lineup. There are more and of course there is also the larger 120mm lineup as well.

That looks like a good find, I even like the colour.  I somewhat agree about the Wenger scissors.  I like the engineering of them better than Vics, but I simply cannot stand the serrations.  Less important perhaps but I also am not so fond of the fact that the legs are much thinner on the Wenger, it makes them uncomfortable to use after a while.

I like the Esquire size wise but don't get on with the scissors.  I have a silver one but nothing in titanium

Good catch on the serrated one  :tu: Seen them before but don't own one.

Yum!

The scissors don't bother me too much TBH. They aren't as good as Vics, but they'll do.

The spring is much more durable and they don't look like they are from the 19th century.

You'd think so.

However, I've had quite a few second hand Wengers pass my way that have the spring/lever bent out of shape.  This is tricky and sometimes impossible to rectify.  I've also had many Vic.s with broken scissor springs.  The difference being I can replace one of those in thirty seconds and its back in business.

Other than the blade, the scissors have to be my most used tool and I've never broken a spring yet.  What do you have to do to them to get them to fail?  I know they do, as Neil says, I've seen plenty of second hand Vics with broken or lost springs.  I just don't know how it could happen without trying something that would be close to abuse.

Have you got it fixed or do you need a new spring?  I'm not fattening RMs coffers by posting just a spring but I'll fit you one at the meet if you like  :tu:
