I want to replace my Tomahawk I use with a smaller Axe / hatchet with a good hammer head made of quality steel that will hold a good edge that won't cost me so much I won't want to use it.
It will be stored in my back pack so it can't be to large. A compact work tool.
Please not the cheap pry bar hammer hattchet. I want a qualty tool. :pok:
I can make a sheath for it so that will save . I don't want to spend more than 20 30 $
I need some Ideas the closet thing I've found looking around my local stores is a shingle hammer.
Here's my beat up tomahawks. (http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc421/JAfromMn/IMG-20120907-02173.jpg)
They work but I need something smaller with more function and a better steel.
Thanks for your ideas.

Here you go

-
enki_ck you beat me to it. I love that little hatchet. Owned one for decades and it's still going strong.
-
I like the eastwing hatchet is nice. I looks at a larger one at a hardware store there a nice tool.
I'm looking for something that's more of a tool.
A flat edge would be nice.
The more function the better. ???
-
Oh you mean like a carpenters axe? They do make one as well.

That would would work. I'm going to have to google it. It looks heavy.
Something strong light and short.
The lay out of that one is just about perfect. :tu:
-
A affordable version of this. http://www.garrettwade.com/product.asp?splid=mob&pn=25S02.01 (http://www.garrettwade.com/product.asp?splid=mob&pn=25S02.01)
With a head more like the east wing crapenters axe.

Gerber back paxe or fiskars hatchet?
-
I've never used a axe made by gerber. Some of there products are junk I'm unsure of anything made by them.
-
Fiskars hatchets are great, very well made but not light. I played with one at a local store but as everything around here it's expensive. $75 for the small hatchet. :ahhh The grind on them is perfect for splitting wood. Fiskars on the right. The handle is made from a kind of tough plastic to make it lighter.

-
I also found this small Estwing lookalike made by Stihl  for around $20 locally. Rubberised grip instaid of the Estwing leader washers. Couldn't find any info on it online though.

-
The only issue I've had with Gerber/Fiskars axes is that the edge holding isn't great :-\
-
A quality tool with a head like the eastwing carpenters Axe with a wood or plastic handel that could fit in a bag would be perfect.
I like all the axe's suggested.
Thanks for giving me more ideas everyone.
-
I know there over your budget, but I really can't recommended Gransfor Bruks axes and hatchets :tu:
-
Check out www.leevalley.com for the box tool. I think it's about $13 and it's tough as nails- in fact it has a nail puller as well! It's not the kind of axe you are going to get razor sharp, but it is the kind of axe you aren't going to worry about scratching the finish on!

Tattosteve hooked me up with this old estwing hatchet. The molding bar is also a estwing (http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc421/JAfromMn/IMG-20121015-02323.jpg)
He wraped and shortened it for me
>:D
I also ordered a Estwing E1H with leather handel today. 3inch blade
It cost a little to much but it should last my liftime.
-
I had a little package waiting on the table when I came hole on my lunch break today. I got a my estwing carpenters axe :ahhh:
Thanks for all the great suggestions. I really like it.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on it once you've had it a while mate :tu:

Yup- got to love a good axe!

And yes Def you got to love a good axe :D

Thanks mate :tu:

I'll do a review of the e1h after I give it some hard use.
Anyone Got a good Idea for a Sheath?
I'm going to have to make one.

Any updates on the Estwing carpenters? :pok:
-
Any updates on the Estwing carpenters? :pok:
she's working out very well.
it holds a ok edge that is easy to keep.
the nail puller is just about useless but I sharpened it with a file and it makes a great line cutter.
the leather handle has been getting wore but there's not much I can do about that. Its not the axes fault.
Still happy with my estwing.
Il take some pics of it and the sheath I had to make for it soon.
I want a rubber handle riggers axe next. Its the same thing just a bit bigger
-
I just want one to match my Estwing hammer!
Good to know that their axes are also worth having :tu:
-
Bridgeport Hatchet is my choice---mine was my great grandfather's and was handed down (I'm the 4th gen to have her).
It's not sentimental value only...this thing is well-made and fits the hand better than the most expensive tools out there. These were made for and licensed to the Boy Scouts, military, merchant marine, and every other gov't agency.
For sale on E-bay cheap too if u look. Here's an example that would take a day of TLC to be like new:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-BRIDGEPORT-Boy-Scout-Hatchet-Axe-Fleur-de-Lis-Logo-/221201235958?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item33809efff6
I am truly amazed how inexpensive, but well-made the Fiskars hatchets/axes are (light too), so you really can't go wrong there imo. I'm just old school I guess, so their hatchets aren't for me, but I can work MUCH longer with the Fiskars splitting axe than with my old school stuff.
-
I have to give a short update to my carpenter axe thread.
the estwing has been a excellent tool I use it for small tree removal and ripping the skirting off of mobile homes also cutting/chopping/hammering,prying off anything else holding a home up from moving while I'm at it.
I've been impressed with how easily the edge can be brought back after being seriously damaged.
like I said I use the axe often to pry between a home and its skirting. I do not look for nails that may be in the way. So the edge takes a real beating. I also like a sharp tool when I do use the axe for its intended purpose. The edge is easy to get back. I have done no damage to the head or edge after a summer of abuse.
the only flaw and why I still use my cold steel hawk more is the leather handle looks very nice but is slick with wet hands
I keep it in my bag and it comes with me on all my out of town jobs. Its size is way more travel friendly than the cs hawk I'm used to toting around.
I have plans to by the larger estwing riggers axe in the future. I will get the rubber Handel for it. I use a large estwing ripping hammer at work although I don't like the look of the Handel its held up great to some extreme abuse and neglect. Still works great.
to some it up.
I like my estwing
if I lost it I would buy one just like it to replace it.
-
I thought I had my mind made up on my next axe tool.
I blame Def for making me want to look more. :)

yeah but its not the one I want. I'm being picky. Close but Il hold off until I find it.
That is really nice man. Its flatter edge is more like what I'm used to.
thanks Gareth

yeah I feel the same.
that's why I want as much information as possible
its a huge purchase for me.

Is there any other " tactical " like tomahawks with a hammer end and not the spike.
I like the looks of most of the tactical hawks I've seen but I think a sharp spike pointing at me is kinda dangerous for what I would use it for.
I'd like the beard sharpened and a pry end on the Handel would be a huge bonus. I'd also prefer a composite or steel handle than wood.
I'm willing to pay a little more for this one because I don't plan on abusing it at work. Its more for me to have a bad ass looking hawk to show off around the campsite than anything. :P
I've done a lot of looking and the logerhead is just about perfect besides the price.
PS I think the Gerber with the Handel cut out of its head it UGLY besides that it has alot of functions I like. the crkt is just to fugly

You're looking, these days, for a carpenters hatchet. Probably a half hatchet. An ace shouldn't be used for hammering metal, or any heavy hammering at all. It will open the eye, and loosen the head, probably irreparably. Hatchets have a hammer on the butt, and a straight handle. Many are chisel ground with a flat or square bit. Estwing could be an exception, but the butt, which isn't tempered as hard, will spawl over time. But we live in a disposable society.

I still love my estwing carpenters axe. :tu:

One more thought
I use my tomahawk's etc more as a demolition tool than to build anything.
I'd use the hammer end mostly on wood and brick.
if I got to do alot of hammering I use a hammer but its nice to have one to break stuff with. Chopping and smashing. A true multitool :multi:
-
Wait, you mean that's not what my Leatherman is for?!?! ??? :D

I do hesitate to point this one out, it's certainly not a personal recommendation, but it's the only modern style hammer headed 'hawk that I could find without breaking the bank.

I may also get a truckers friend. But I'm going to try the Gerber first.

Another option, Cold Steel's Trail hawk. At 24oz. it's lighter than the carpenters axe. Just shorten the handle to what you need.

I do own a rifleman's hawk I keep at work a norse hawk for throwing that lives with my rarely used camping gear.
I've been thinking about cutting down a trail hawk.
I bet the Smurf out of them and I can say they make a decent tool.
