Title: Man Bags
Post by: Teofilo on October 23, 2012, 04:23:02 PM
I carry sling bags on week days, and belt bags on week-ends. I have a few clutch bags but drawer queens now. Anyone here who still carry attache cases? :D

Hard to beat a nice aluminium attache case when it comes to transporting papers under nasty conditions, but... no. :) My most used EDC is a very small messenger, too small for A4, actually, but big enough for a notebook, a flashlight, etc. If I need more space, I upgrade to a bigger messenger or a backpack.

Majority voters here... and believe me I have tried quite a few options!

I am ashamed to say I do not really know what most of the options mean exactly; I am not fashionable enough.

Sometimes when I want to carry stuff I use a rucksack and when cycling a belt bag.
I voted accordingly.

Mainly I use nylon bags....

I've never really been a fan of single strap bags (sling or messenger) so I tend to either go for a backpack or something I carry in my hand. Generally for me it'll be a Lowepro Orion Trekker II for EDC uses, and occasionally a messager bag or an overnight bag with shoulder straps removed. I do have a hard briefcase which gets occasional use too.

I've been using my Maxped Jumbo a lot this year. It's perfect carry-on through airports. I also have been taking it on overnight stays and a lot when I go wheeling. Perfect size for a drink, rain jacket and all my man stuff like contact case and tooth brush, knives, lights and spare batteries.

Mine are the backpack and sling. The backpack (Camelbak BFM) for the computer and other EDC stuff, the sling (Lowepro Slingshot 300 AW) for the camera equipment.

Just wondering though, who (of the men here) will admit to carrying a clutch? I have several friends who carry them. Just curious.

Great topic idea  :2tu: :2tu: :2tu: :2tu: :2tu:

I have a Timbuk2 customized small messenger that I've had for about four years now.  Love the thing to death; it's been the best EDC bag I've ever had.  I bike a lot and there's just no comparison between a messenger bag and a backpack for comfort and ease of use; a good messenger bag wins hands-down every time.  I am biased though; I was a bike messenger in San Francisco for a year and a half before I started college.     Been using messenger bags ever since.

I have developed an interest in the MaxPed Monsoon though, primarily because it can carry a hydration bladder.

On longer trips, I use a MaxP FliegerDuffel for travelling, and a North Face backpack when hiking. For day-to-day use, I carried a Booq Boa Nerve S as my main bag for the best part of the last 3 or so years, rotated with a Timbuk2 small classic messenger, a MaxP Malaga, and a MaxP Mongo. I had a Lunada before that, but had to upgrade due to my netbook dying and my new laptop being too large for the Lunada. For the past month I've been using my brand-spanking-new custom Bagaboo small classic messenger and I'm quite happy with it, to the extent that all other bags have been sitting in the closet since I got it. I can definitely see a medium-sized Bagaboo Workhorse in my future...

So messenger, sling, and backpack... although I could only vote for two of them. :tu:

Laptop bag for me- the Maxpedition Tactical Operator has been with me for years and I use it constantly.  The thing still looks new!

I have also recently picked up a MOLLE Contour and GoPro cameras and accessories.  This is the kit here, only mine is black:

I usually carry a backpack with me to work.  During the summer or if I want a lighter load out,  I'll carry a Heys Travelmate with me.

I highly recommend the Travelmate.  Its fairly small, and has the waterbottle holder.

I use a Wenger backpack every day.  I've had it since 2008, and it's still in great shape.  It carries my lunch, assorted tools, iPad, etc daily.  I also take it hiking and camping, and on most weekends away.

Now that I like! That's freaking cool!  :tu:

I used to only carry little tidbits, but that's because I had main things in my vehicle, but since I can no longer drive I've started moving up to a larger means of carry, my wife thinks I'm nuts but every time she needs something and I have it stashed in my bag, she's grown more and more fond of me carrying it. I keep asking her, what's the diff of this or a baby bag?  She says oh yeah huh, well one, your lugging it around  JR

I'm a hardcore cyclist 9 months out of the year, so my bags have a definite cycling slant.

For work every day for the last couple years, I've used a Dakine Apex backpack. Wicked comfortable, supremely versatile in what size objects it can carry, tons of organization, and tough as nails. It's made for mountain biking, so it will also take a hydration bladder on my off road adventures and unassisted century rides.

For runs to the gym, quick overnights, and impromptu short grocery runs, I use the excellent Chrome Night Mini-Messenger. It's weatherproof, indestructible, made in the USA, and rides very comfortably. It also glows like a beacon when a headlight hits it. I love this bag.

For usual trips out with the wife and kid, visiting with friends, and rides to the coffee shop, I go lean and mean with the Chrome Victor. It'll hold my smart phone, 7" tablet, and a u-lock. It's a Chrome, so it's weather resistant, built to last in the USA, and good looking. I get lots of compliments on this one.

I would submit 3 votes but I was restricted to just 2.
First of all I own now just 4 bags. 3 are Victorinox and one is Swiss Military (an olive drub canvas one with beautiful Swiss crosses on the zippers that I bought from Zurich airport years ago). I use one of the Victorinox every single day and the Swiss Military is a back-up and utility bag.
The "messenger" type, Trevi is the formal name, is used every working day, for the morning and evening job, sometimes even on weekends. Let's say 70%
The sling type is used for leasure, mostly during the warm months (when I don't have a heavy coat with many pockets) except when I dress formally. Let's say 20%
The backpack is used mainly when I travel. It is my tourist bag, but I also use it for astronomical outreach. Lets say 10%

All three bags are of excellent quality and very goodlooking, even after years of use (about 10 years for the sling, now discontinued model).

I used to carry a backpack with me 99% of the time, and in the summer it was mostly empty.
That is until now.  :D
I just recently bought an American Tourister COLORA II Cross-Over Bag in navy blue a few days ago. And from now in this will be my main bag for taking the minimal essentials to work and around town.
So for me it's either a backpack or a sling bag thingy

Any own a 5.11 tactical moab 6 or 10?  I'm taking a keen liking to mine.  :D

I'm pretty tall and it fits me well. My other bag i'm pretty partial to is my maxped jumbo in black. It has went thru 3 trips to disneyworld..the last trip it rained every damn day. Kept everything dry thanks to the pull string inside.

The one here is the moab 10 in khaki. It went to brownsville and corpus christi last week as my walk around bag. Wore it all thru the day while touring the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. Twas comfy the whole day. Had my camera, hoodie, water bottle and some random paperwork in it. Haven't carried it in any weather so can't report on its water shedding capabilities as of yet. Shouldn't be long here in Texas though.  ::)

While it's not a 'man bag', I carry a Piel hobo sling, which can either be slung over one shoulder, or the main strap unzips down the middle to be worn like a backpack. It's plain black with very heavy leather and solid hardware, and holds a good deal of stuff.

It looks very innocuous, has high versatility, and after having it for 4 or 5 years, I'm seeing no appreciable wear on it.

First of all, I apologize for not posting here for months. I had a quite busy time...

Anyhow, I have different bags for my stuff, so I can pick whatever I need. Most of my bags are Messenger bags, Crumpler and Oakley. I like to keep my stuff organized, and so I love bags with plenty of room and pockets.
When I need a backbag, I use my Orthovox from Switzerland or a Crumpler, but for some reasons backbags never seem to have as many pockets as messenger style bags.

I´m just thinking of getting a new "daddy" EDC bag, but I can not decide what would suit me best for that purpose. I had a look at Maxpedition and 5.11 Versipacks and Gearslingers, but even after watching and reading literally dozens of reviews I can not decide. While choosing a workbag is quite easy, my laptop and documents determine the minimal size, I´m unsure what bag is large enough to fit my needs, but small enough to stay a lightweight EDC. I tend to stuff my bags, so a large bag means a lot of redundant stuff inside. I just checked my Crumpler workbag, and discovered 4 SAK, 2 MT, 2 Flashlights, spare batteries, 2 FAK, ... Guess I´ll have to do a lot more research on that topic to find my minimalist daddy EDC bag.

On workdays, I carry a green, Reebok branded gym bag. I guess it is technically a duffel, and holds a towel, my laptop, change if clothes, shower shoes, toiletries, a 32 oz Napgene, weight gloves, and various bits and bobs. It is a piece of crap; it is seven months old; at the three month mark, the stitching that separates the main compartment and one of the side pockets came undone. I cut out the remaining fabric (with a Vic Classic, no less) to effectively expand the main compartment. I will use it until it craps out.

I also have a Jansport backpack that has held up since college very nicely. It must be 11 years old now, and has some obvious wear and tear, but no appreciable damage, and none of the zippers bind up. The compartments are waterproof too; I didn't lose my laptop when a Monster energy drink burst in a separate pocket. I was very happy with this turn of events.

Both bags are with me in Key West at the moment. Both are great carryon size.

MW are just about the best out there. If you're not an organization freak, that is; you only get two external 3-d pockets and a couple of flat internal ones (under the outside zip) and that's all. The main pocket can get quite deep, what with the rolltop and all, but that's also the main shortcoming of this bag: reaching in to the main compartment while wearing the bag is not that easy... That said, my Rummy is the most comfortable of my pack of messengers; the magic is all in the shoulder strap configuration and its fixed wide pad.

If you're into messengers, I'd suggest having a look at Greenroom136; Patrick is great to work with and their bags are top notch. I find myself going back to my waxed Heretic for day-to-day jobs, and even plan to use it as my sole bag in an upcoming trip to Budapest (the Rummy and a couple of Bagaboos used to be my go-to bags before getting the Heretic).

I think I will be ok on the Organizational Front, I like to keep items like my First Aid kit and such in their own cases to help prevent damage and if I just want to carry on particular item..I ride a Motorcycle and that is what interests me the most, that and the Durability Factor. The Wenger had held up marvelously especially considering what I paid for it (If I remember correctly about 50 Dollars). I will say that it has seen a bit of Repair by myself as needed and I had to re vamp the straps because of the plastic buckles breaking..Nut overall as hard as I have been on it I am pleased, I am being realistic though and realize that nothing lasts forever and the time has come to start seriously looking for a replacement. For me the Bag is not an EDC BAg or a Bug Out Bag or even a Get Home Bag, more of what I would like to call an ALL PURPOSE BAG. It carries what I feel and have discovered I need on a Daily Basis as A Driver, Dad, Husband, Friend, or Good Citizen with just enough to keep me warm dry and safe if I had to take a really long walk in some kind of Disaster

All I carry is a wallet, SAK, AA light, comb, keys, flip phone (go ahead and laugh), sunglasses and wrist watch. I have no need for a tacticool murse.

But if I was carrying more stuff, I’d opt for a simple backpack because it’s innocuous in the place I live. In a business environment, I’d opt for a briefcase. Environment determines the method of carry.

Innocuousness is key.

thinking about picking up another carry bag ....I like the maxped jumbo good enough...love my 5.11 moab 10 but wish it held more.

Recommend me a bag someone...I like sling bags, im 6'5 about 220...maybe the maxped monsoon or Sitka.  Afraid Sitka may look silly on someone as big as me...

needs to hold standard size notebook like a composition book, maybe a water bottle holder, needs to be built like a brick sh...well u know. Room for a jacket when taken off, random stuff like a 7 inch tablet, maybe a 13-14 inch laptop every now and then. Mainly throw keys, pharmaceuticals snacks , drinks, last minute tools in it for the long worknight.

I think a sling bag as it wont garnish up the wisecracks of manpurse at work like let's say a maxped colossus would get me.

I've been using the Maxpedition Jumbo EDC S-Type for a few months, and I'm pretty happy with it. I'm fine with the 800 cordura material, versus the standard 1000. I find the waterbottle holder a tad less useful than I thought it would be, but great when I'm on walks/hikes.

Otherwise, space is fine, and it handles about a 10 pound load pretty effortlessly, and carries very comfortably.

There is a weirdness where the main compartment's flap doesn't always cover the entire compartment (exposing a bit on the sides), so the possibility exists that rain could get on stuff inside, although in reality, I've never encountered the problem. Then again, I don't feel a great need to hike in the rain.

thinking about picking up another carry bag ....I like the maxped jumbo good enough...love my 5.11 moab 10 but wish it held more.

I'm somewhere around 6'2" and I'm very happy with my Red Oxx Rock Hopper (http://www.redoxx.com/Backpacks-Daypacks/Rock-Hopper/91046/160/Product), just to make a little different suggestion.

It should have an extra cover inside that you can draw up to keep stuff from getting wet.

I kind of miss when it was easy to find Czech 'Bread Bags" in local surplus stores. As it is, I actually really like my old Osprey Warp, which looks good, holds lots, and isn't huge. It's a shame they stopped making it.

Which one?

Which sling, I mean. Not which MEC.

I carried an MEC Small Carry-All for a long time, but when it came time to replace it they had switched to their new, nearly zipper-free version. The only way to make the bag more insecure would be to add spring-loaded ejection pockets.

Have you tried an asymmetric one? They can only be worn comfortably over one of the shoulders if wearing over one shoulder, but I think it's a reasonable trade-off.

The Red Oxx I dumped a link to earlier is an example, and the only one I have tested myself. I suspect there are several offers, but it's not like it's something they shout about. "Look, it's asymmetric!" doesn't sound too good. ;) I guess "ergonomic" may be a keyword to search for.

This is the only bag that has made my short list: http://www.stmbags.com/catalog/laptop-bags/velo-medium-laptop-shoulder-bag/ and is affordable.

The dual bottle holders is a big plus for me as I usually leave home with a coffee in hand, and drink water once the coffee is consumed. My motorcycle doesn't have cup holders, so the bag has to carry the sealed thermal coffee mug and 1L water bottle. The clean appearance of this bag is another plus over the tacticool gear I've been trying to be happy with. Should look much better in a clients office...

I've been using a polish army bread bag as a walking-around bag recently.  Hard to beat for value.  There are a lot available as new-old-stock at the moment and they can be had for as little as £5.  You have to buy, borrow or make a shoulder strap though, as they usually don't come with one.

I just picked up a new Saddleback Medium Briefcase in Chestnut.  It's fun to get back into bags for a bit.  I'm thinking of picking up a new smaller satchel-type bag soon as well, maybe a Saddleback satchel or a maxped fatboy.  The Briefcase is my daily driver for work and school, as it holds all my textbooks and the like.  It's a tad heavy but I only carry it a short distance each way.

If their reputation says anything, I've got no worries about it holding up just fine.  It's a beautiful bag, perfect for my needs at the moment.  And when it's not perfect for every day anymore, it will become my weekend overnight bag.  It's silly, I'm really serious about getting one of their satchels at the moment...

I've been struggling with this question for a while......to Man Bag or not.....

I definitely don't feel prepared enough with what I can carry in my pockets, something as simple as a water bottle being the obvious example.
No problem carrying it to and from the office, but the problem starts with shops, or banks....all the places where you either can't or don't want to take the bag.

ATM I don't have anywhere out of sight to hide a bag in my car, and leaving a bag of any description in the car is great way to get the window busted and the lot stolen.

I would go for something like the MaxPed Neatfreak....

I don't even care about man bag comments anymore.  I carry what I need in a bag, minus my pocket EDC.  Whether it's a backpack, messenger bag, satchel, or whatever, I don't care what people say.  I have a busy life and as long as I have my bag then I'll have remembered to put whatever I need in it for the day.  As for carrying it into stores and banks and the like, it just has to be small enough to be comfortable.  My current briefcase is a bit large to carry around the mall, but it is always in the car if I need it.  I plan on getting a smaller bag to carry on light days.

I have a repro German mountain pack I've used for the past 15 years - it's still holding up well although the PVC bottom is starting to crack.

The only gripe I have with it is that the side pockets are too small to accomodate a 58 pattern water bottle so.........

Now I am mostly using a BCB 25l nylon rucksack which has 3 decent sized side pockets - 2 water bottles (on a long day out) and a FAK. Sweet

Got in on a Kickstarter deal for NutSac. That's right, NutSac. It's a smallish Murse/Mag that more casual women can also get away with. Minimalistic. Two open pockets inside, full length zip inside, full length zip under flap. Messenger flap secured by strong magnets over the whole thing. Main bag with the two pockets also zips shut for security. My man saw mine, wanted one too! Made of brown, water resistant canvas. You can now see it on Amazon. Just search for NutSac. There are two different ways of closing flap - magnets (how do they work?) and a one handed buckle. Hubby opted for buckle. Really nifty.

I went ahead and snatched up a deal on a Saddleback medium satchel on Ebay.  I only did it because I happened to see the exact bag I was looking for for a great price.  I didn't want one of their newer round satchels, as I don't like the design as much.  I wanted one of the older ones that stand up when you set them down.  I got mine in chestnut.  Brand spankin' new bag for about 30% off, once again.

Title: Re: Man Bags

Saddleback makes great stuff, but I have a feeling they weigh a ton

You know, they aren't light.  Pretty much every review you read will have a comment similar to: "Now the bag is pretty heavy, but that's just because it's made from quality materials" or "It is heavy, but you get used to it".  While both are true, a buyer needs to understand there is a ton of marketing built into Saddleback's MO, and you shouldn't fall into the trap just because the bags are   .  Most reviews are either done by a site that reviews gear or a new Saddleback customer that just unboxed their new bag and are probably completely wrapped up in the hype.  I can't stand unboxing reviews.

The bags weigh a good amount, they are stiff when they are new, and they have next to zero organization.  That being said, I've carried my new medium briefcase for about a month now and I truly did get used to the weight.  It's an incredible looking bag and I love it more every day, but I also understand that the bag itself will not make me a world traveler, it won't make me a more interesting person, it's just a bag.

My medium satchel works really great for lighter EDC.  Compared to the briefcase it's light as a feather, and I wear it for long stretches with no issues.  It lacks organization, and that kinda bugs me, but for what I use it for it's fine.  I really love the look of worn leather and these bags are both starting to get a small amount of character from me using them.  They aren't the end all when it comes to bags, but if you buy one you will see what I mean, they are pretty sweet.  Just be sure to REALLY consider the price and make sure it's what you want and that you'll use it, or your wife might just kill you!
Title: Re: Man Bags
Post by: styx on October 11, 2015, 02:35:55 PM
Thankfully I do not have a wife to kill me. Yet, at least.

However you are right. I am slightly turned off by their larger offerings since weight adds up quick. A laptop, a bunch of papers, some unpredictable things and it becomes cumbersome.
Now I can't comment on the quality but with leather heavy tends to be good. Thicker, more resilient and it will surely have more character once it's worn in than any nylon bag on the market

I don't need a bag for EDC as I keep everything stuffed in my pockets, LM sheath, and a small LoPro camera pouch on my belt. Wearing 3-4 dedicated pouches/holsters does make me look like Batman or a LEO to some but it works. I do regularly have a bag available.

My two bags that see the most use are a basic canvas rucksack style back pack that was offered by Craftsman in the '90s I bought 2 new in 96 and still have one in good condition. This is my primary though usually the main compartment is empty and I keep any extra EDC in the side pockets.

My other bag is even older it is a late 40s-early 50s army messenger bag of unknown origin. Interestingly this bag was NOS when I got it a few months ago, the buckles had never been done up and the punch slugs were still in the leather. Its about the size of a Webster's Encyclopedic dictionary, or just the right size for a 5in thick stack of files and documents. It has as a canvas shell with an leather liner both double stitched with a rubber cement bonding them together and waterproofing the compartment.

Both of these are "overflow" for if I need some extra stuff or am planning on having extras like bottled water or purchases to carry. In a pinch three packable backpacks/stuff-sacks live in my car and see regular use.

Has anyone tried out Nutsac company?

Ok I've stppoed laughing now, but no I haven't and I'm too scared to google them

I'm always looking for another good bag to carry to work. Unfortunately, I don't think people at work would get tired of saying, "How's your nutsac?"
