its a shame you dont see your work because i bet some members would spend some good money on some of those, but i understand that its your hobby and these take a lot of effort and for that you would want to keep them. if i had that skill i don't think i would sell them.

Are there any special things that need to be done to work with mammoth ivory? I'd be worried about burns from a saw or sander; shattering the scale while working with it; and splits when trying to making the cut outs. :ahhh

Seit 2 Jahren schon machte ich das am meisten als Geshenk für mein beste Kollegen,
mein Arbeitplatz ist nur in die Küche weil ich habe kein eigene Werstatt am meisten
Wochenende und benutze ich Werkzeug nur mit Handbetrieb kein Elektische Werkzeuge
sowie 220v oder 12v alle nur Hand und Lieb habe,mann kann 99.99% hand made auch
nicht Falsch zu sagen.
Das Material sowie Mammut Elfenbein und Holz ich habe von Deutschland bestellt und
andere Stück von mein Kolleg hat mir gesendet machmal habe ich auch in Fohmarkt
selbst gekauft,natürlich mann kann kaufen aber du musst selbst aussuchen.
Ich will verschiedene Material kennenlernen dafür musste ich das tun aber bin sehr Froh
am mein Ergebniss.Dank für deines Kompliment :salute:

Here's a short summary of his response to me earlier.
He's making all of these in his kitchen on weekends as he doesn't have a workshop and he makes all of these by hand, without any use of power tools, just a hand drill, saw and files. He doesn't sell them, just gives them as gifts to his friends. He's been making them for two years now. The materials for the scales, mammoth ivory and wood he got from Germany or his friends and some of it he found at flea markets. He's trying to get to know how different materials can be processed, and is pretty much happy with his results so far.

ong does it all by hand in his kitchen, no power tools or lasers. Also it's easier for him to communicate in German.

I know that this thread has a bunch of folks already gushing over your work, Ong, but I wanted to put in my opinion.
Your scrimshaw work, particularly seen on the previous page plaque with the figure sitting cross-legged, shows a great deal of real artistic ability. Having done a fair bit of hand-made art with pen on paper, I know the amount of effort it takes to make an image like that, and I'm very impressed. I could fully and completely imagine that plaque being a piece worthy of a museum collection. Seriously.
Setting the strictly artistic element aside, this is craftsmanship of the very highest degree. I don't think a lot of people understand or appreciate the difference between art and craft, but your work shows both, and great skill in each. Your eye for selecting material, and using them to make beautiful objects is phenomenal.
It's a sad truth that your chosen medium is never likely to get you the amount of recognition your level of skill deserves, but I hope you understand that for those of us here, your work is really, truly the kind of thing that brings untold joy.

I was looking at these photos some days ago when I heard my wife say "Wow, that's a nice SAK". Normally she couldn't care less for a SAK. She has an eye for beautiful things though. So, we sat there and saw all your pages!

My apoligies for poor german grammer, it came from Google translate. I didnt mean to create any distance, I was trying to make it eaiser to communicate, not very well though.

HOWEVER... I think the most 'fashoinable' scales I've ever heard of are the mammoth ivory. If they had a Swisschamp with those, I think that would straight-up win in cool-factor. And the only way THAT could be cooler, IMO, is if it was a custom scrimshawed version by ong. See the following thread...

I don't think there's anyone on these boards who has looked on this work and not been utterly amazed. I was serious when I said that I think the most artistic, 'coolest', SAK I've ever seen was the work in this thread. I have a particular love of the Mammoth Ivory scrimshaw pieces, because it mixes ivory from a long extinct species, so you get some paleo stuff going on, AND ong's beautiful handiwork. I simply can't think of anything more artistically awesome than that.
