Had completed the 84mm (‘tween) Challenge in 2023 and do not recall this model mentioned.

Is the Sportsman unique because of the corkscrew and nail file blade instead of a Phillips and Pen blade?I’m not quite clear on what you’re asking.
Yep, was curious if I describe the big difference from the Tinker 84mm?You’re correct. The Sportsman has the nail file in place of the 84mm Tinker’s small blade, and corkscrew in place of the backside Phillips. No other differences.
Can we select a different month? As it was mentioned, there is Opinel challenge in March…
Absolutely!
I wasn’t aware of the conflict with the Opinel challenge.
What about April or May? Would that work better for most folks?
Here is the link of planned challenges. It is not updated but will give you an idea of what is planned.
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,91701.0.html
This might be fun and a good reason to get a new sportsman with the new file. I carried mine for I don't know how many years. Got one as a kid and had it until I was a teenager and then a couple more years when I had my first doughter
What about a Swiss Sportsman? :pok:
Do what now?
Sportsman you say. It's a worthy knife. Not terribly different from a small Tinker but if you play guitar or do things that require some nail care, it or a cadet is worth having.
Is there a badge for that?
Carry a Tinker Small most days so would be an easy one for me.

There was a Tween (84mm/85mm) SAK Challenge that ran in June 2023. A badge was created for it, and completing this Sportsman Challenge should qualify for that badge (assuming you don’t already have it).
Absolutely no idea! I also don’t know who to beg for a badge if there isn’t one.
Am I crazy or have I seen folks doing badge challenges by them selves in the past?My understanding is that, depending on the requirements of each specific badge, it is possible to earn some existing badges by oneself.
My understanding is that, depending on the requirements of each specific badge, it is possible to earn some existing badges by oneself.
However, if one is requesting a new challenge badge be created that does not already exist, then a minimum of ten members must participate in the challenge for a new badge to be created.

What about GA1dad and his wenger. At least it is named Sportsman.
I looked up the Wenger Evo 10 online. Lots of nice photos and list of tools. Usual Spartan type tools with a corkscrew, can opener, blah, blah, blah. And photos of the nail file.Sounds like you have an Evo S10, which is equivalent to the Delemont S101. Small clip point blade instead of file and locking main blade. I have one of those too and love it. The small clip point beats the heck out of the namby pamby Vic small blade. My first SAK back in the 60's had a small clip point.
I dug out my unused Wenger Evo 10 and took it out of its package. Usual Spartan type tools, etc. But no nail file. Where the nail file should be is a clip point small blade. So, the punch line to this woeful joke is... I don't have a knife that qualifies. I suppose I could Take a Victorinox Tourist I have and cut little cross hatch marks on the small blade with a diamond file to create a fingernail tool? Well, maybe not.
I knew I had a Wenger with a nail file, and I do, but it doesn't have a corkscrew. So I am out with a disqualification on account of an equipment violation.
Have fun fellas. I will follow the challenge anyway. And sit on the bench. Best wishes. Gary
:dunno:
OK LoopCutter talked me into it. I am IN the challenge.. I have no internet on the weekend.. long story.. so I will often do 2 or three pics at a time ...her we go!
DAY 1
A year ago I bought the Canada Flag Sportsman. I got it more as a novelty. I liked the Canada flag because, you guessed it, I am Canadian.
I mainly carried a black , alox Cadet. I even did a couple reviews of my Cadet. I loved the cadet so much, or so I thought. But time and time again I found myself going to the Sportsman. The Cadet and Sportsman have the same blade, screw drivers and nail file. The sportsman however, has a few extra tools, while remaining roughly the same size. Not to mention , it has a beautiful Canadian flag on it.
Here are the tools on the Sportsman :
Tweezers / Can opener / Screwdriver 3 mm / Bottle opener / Screwdriver 6 mm / Wire stripper / Reamer, punch and sewing awl / Nail file / Nail cleaner / Toothpick / Key ring / Corkscrew / Blade, large
DIMENSIONS
Height: 15 mm
Length: 84 mm
Width: 26 mm
Weight: 52 g
Before I even realized what happened, I started carrying the sportsman more and more. Now I carry it most days of the week
Its an 84mm SAK so it fits great in that little change pocket in my jeans. I am not at all an outdoorsman so I dont need a saw. I LOVE Victorinox scissors but they make it too thick in my pocket. I do carry a little classic SD on my key ring so if I need scissors they are there.
I constantly use the nail file. This new style, I believe it was a Wagner design ( but could be wrong) is way more aggressive. Its fantastic. It does a much better job at filing my nails. My nails grow super fast so I use it often. I find I use the nail file for all sorts of things. I have filed down an old nail with this new mighty design, used it to scrape something from between cracks in the table, or wall. I have used it to pull nails out of a wall, clean my nails, and to scrape away sticky stuff many times. I use the nail file more than any other tool.
The Blade I mostly use to open mail, packages, or to cut string. It a perfect size for the things I do.
I have never been big on corkscrews but then those new little screwdrivers came out that you can put in the cork screw and they are great. On my sportsman I added a little poker into the corkscrew that is great for resetting little electronic devices or for popping out micro SD cards. Some times you just need a tiny poker for tiny jobs. I have even found uses for the corkscrew .
I then added a red toothpick and red tipped tweezers , and a red lanyard . Now it looks SWEET.
To my surprise I use the toothpick a lot. I have one in my little SD that is on my key ring BUT I dont always have my keys on me. The cadet didnt have a toothpick so I didnt realize how much I would use it till I got the Sportsman.
I have used the reamer to scrape at things or to punch holes into leather. I use the screwdrivers all the time. I love the flat head to pry things open.
I really like the 2 layer SAKs. they are perfect for me in the office.
SO after a year, the Sportsman has slowly won my heart.
I carry it almost every day. I only swap it out to give other SAKs a day or two pocket time. I was an alox guy for a long time but it does feel good to once again have the classic red cellidor scales in my pocket. Its even nicer with my Canada flag on it.
The Sportsman Challenge starts tomorrow!
Any last minute sign ups? Think about it while you file that ragged thumbnail with the file on your Sportsman….
Cheese...
Tomorrow I'll be cutting some mature English cheddar too.
:like: :like: That is a HANDSOME set of scales!
Some people seem to have an aversion to having a can opener on their SAKs in 2024. Apparently because we have pull tabs for all cans these days. I do not understand this reasoning, because it is such a versatile and multi-purpose tool.
I particularly like it as a thin and light pry tool (like you showed above @Spatha), a makeshift hook, or a scraper with the circular edge. Not to mention as a 2D Philips driver or actual can opener. I still find scenarios where I have to cut open an “old skool” can, or where the modern pull tab broke off. It is one of my favourite tools to be honest.

Day 2 (how are some of y’all on Day 3 already?):
Those Canadian scales look really cool!
You convinced me. I'd love to sign up if it's not already too late.
This new file seems very aggressive to me, but perhaps I just need to get used to it. At the moment I still prefer the old style.

Marlowe, do I see mangetout trimmings there, or some other pea or bean? Mangetout are one of my favourite veggies
Snow peas this time! I’m afraid I don’t know what a mangetout is…Mangetout "eat all" is the French word for snow peas. You eat all: the pea and the pod.
DAY 4 !!!!You set the bar pretty high!
I know I am late to the party, but I just signed up and received my Sportsman today. Would you fine gentlemen be ok if I started today?
Thanks LoopCutter and Gary (via PM). Sorry I have not replied to your message yet, but I am not sure how. There does not seem to be a reply button :think:I believe you have to have five posts before you can send or reply to a PM.

Day 5
Nothing to report on this rainy Pacific Northwest day
Hey Marlowe,
Lots of nice photos from the troops. Are you having fun being MC on the challenge? Enjoying the posts from everyone. Best wishes. G

Gosh. I've not been here much lately but the Sportsman is my favourite SAK. I shall watch this challenge with interest so good luck guys, keep 'em coming :like:
Just to add a bit here's my Christmas LE Sportsman. It really doesn't get out enough!
I am really liking this small knife in my pocket. It disappears when I don’t need it, but it is still always there.
This one is the Wenger Evo Soft Touch 10. The Wenger tools differ a bit from the Victorinox Sportsman versions but I think it might still fit the criteria for this challenge?

I have to admit I cheated the challenge as for some tasks I needed to use something more heavy duty…
I hope that you can forgive me this exception.

In the evening I took my wife to Ennio Morricone’s concert. It was amazing! I couldn’t carry the Sportsman though because I wouldn’t pass the security gate…

I really like the look of this Wenger! Seems pretty much equivalent to the Sportsman - brothers from another mother...
:like: :gimme:
All good! And well done for contributing to a worthy community project. Thanks!
I noticed the green Bond MI6 Nato strap. I have the exact same one on a Seiko Turtle diver... I am a big fan of the Nato-style straps (to be more specific, the thicker 3-ring Zulu straps). Most comfortable and practical straps I've found.
Fantastic! I'm a bit jealous!
Day 7. I had to open a new bag of morning hot drink mix. Sportsman scissors to cut off the sealed top and add a “thumb notch” to allow easy opening of zip top.
The Dandy is caffeine free and has ingredients that are friendly to preventing another heart attack.

I blew that one. You are correct. My mistake. Too many SAK on the bench. Your Avatar is applicable in this case.Aren’t we all a little nuts sometimes?
Thanks Master!

Day 7
Not Sunday that I would prefer.
It started fine. I made a guacamole. Sportsman cut all the ingredients, of course.
Then there was lot of work in the garden. We planted some trees and guess who cut the twine to tighten them ;)
After that I took care of the grass. I needed to open few packages with some material

Now we are having a dinner (the guacamole with some bread and smoked salmon) and the world seems the be quite alright again :)

Day 8Hope you had some alcohol in your picnic bag to clean it :)
Picnic in the park (lamb curry pies) over lunch with the family. It is school holidays at the moment, so everyone is at home.
I got a splinter in my finger, near the tip of the needle, and performed a successful minor surgery to remove it.

I agree about the file. I originally bought a new Sportsman and did not like the file. Then I discovered the “old” file. FleaBay to the rescue and just in time for the Challenge. The new file unit was returned.I am on the other side when it comes to the file. I never achieved satisfying results with the old style file. I much prefer the new style and wish Victorinox would add them to the Classics as well.

The Sportsman attended a pizza party.
Sometimes I wonder how non-SAK people manage to get through life's daily curveballs and chores?

Well, it ain’t pretty, but it typically goes one of three ways:
1. They take the time and effort to fetch a dedicated tool (e.g. screwdriver or scissors). Effective, but not terribly efficient.
2. They ignore the issue, e.g. that loose screw stays loose.
3. They resort to using the wrong tools because it’s what they have handy, e.g. using keys, a ballpoint pen, or even their teeth to try to open a package.
What are your first thoughts on the Buck 110 Brock ? I've been inclined to get one myself but ...
And Nate/Brock - apparently this is progress and evolution (could've fooled me) but we've become a lot less practical these days
And Nate/Brock - apparently this is progress and evolution (could've fooled me) but we've become a lot less practical these days :think:We mostly live in a world of EZ-open pull tabs these days.
What’s the doggos name? His name is Fredy.
This is a semi-feral stray I adopted after my two elderly dogs handed in their dinner pails. He's been living on the property under a shed for at least two years but when the dogs were around he made himself scarce. It took months to gain his trust. He is also named Freddie!
I love cats. I hope he has a good life with you.:like: Thanks! He turned into a very affectionate and cuddly fellow.
As Nate, Brock and Fast Bill indicated, progress happens. In this case the electric can opener failed an early life (not anywhere close to the duration of the prior one) AND the progressive lift top can did not make it to this item.
Old technology Sportsman put into service today. The few SAKs I own will never collectively have their can opener tool dull in my lifetime. No more electrics, not even a scooter.

Day 13
Nothing special today. Visiting my parents this weekend. We started by walking our dogs and then worked in the garden for the whole day.

In the evening we had some fun with dogs and my nephew

Nicely done, Bunk! My dad similarly adopted a feral, which became a lifelong companion for him. I wish you the best with Freddie.
Bunk Tuppins Hi to Freddie!
Day 14
Walking dogs again. On this photo there is the older one (12 years old) called Bonny.

Day 10
Package duty again...
I figured my life would be incomplete until I experience a classic like a Buck 110. My first "expensive" pocket knife was a Buck, a small skinner-type folder probably 20 years ago. This is my second Buck.

Big knives are a lot of fun.
That classy poniard of yours has invaded my brain. Now I want one too!
DAY 16!!!!!!
Sometimes in a crowd ONE stands out
That Leaf surely does. Do the others in the picture have an inferiority complex? or just being quiet?
That classy poniard of yours has invaded my brain. Now I want one too!
Good looking range of uses there guys. I'm liking the smashed avocado Brock (never tried that) and Rooibos is a good tea to accompany it.
day 15!!!!
snack and a SAK
Opening some sweet onions. Wish they were Vidalia, just not the season yet.
An EDC pocket dump picture for today…
The Rambler (or is it a Manager?) is a winner! :like:
A couple of days late, but as the owner of several Buck 110s, I can share a few opinions and observations.
Thanks for the informative write-up Nate.:cheers: Brock
Day 24
I had plenty of problems to chew on today, but none of them could be solved by the Sportsman - it was all code! (C# and JavaScript for anyone interested)
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
I'm interested! I've been doing software development for the last 20+ years. I worked in C++ for the first half of it, full stack stuff.
Nowadays I am in the Fintech industry (backend Java, Kotlin, Amazon cloud, etc.). I've been busy with AWS studies over the last two months (Solutions Architect certification). Exam is in 10 days! 😅
I think a change of title (don't really care) and salary (do care) are in order soon.
I’m not in IT, but as a general observation I would say there is value in the former because of its potential to impact the latter…
1. If your internal HR looks at comps/benchmarking to evaluate your compensation vs. market, your title probably impacts this evaluation.
2. If you’re talking with external recruiters about what market-competitive compensation looks like for someone with your skill set, and or looking at other job opportunities, your title probably impacts these.
I'm sure you'll do well on your exam! I've spent a lot of time with AWS but never got around to a doing a cert. The current job is all MS stuff so we're on Azure - Microsoft cuts non-profits a really sweet deal, so it's hard to say no.
Good luck!
You can expect some photos of nice western European cities in next few days :)
Brock - sorry for the late comment on your daughter’s science project. It looks great! I love working with my grand-kids on stuff like this. Did you have any detailed plans or simply a photo?
Here I plan on learning a new skill, darning my socks. My grandmother used to do darning and it seriously extended the life of my socks. Sportsman is opening the bags containing the mushroom, needles and yarn. Hopefully I won't poke my eye out
Day 28
Bruges, Belgium
Beautiful scenery Andy! :like:Thank you!
Beautiful scenery Andy! :like:
Day 29
Still in Bruges.
...
You can expect some pictures from Amsterdam tmr. Good night!
Day 30 - last day of the challenge :(Looks like fun, thanks for sharing!
I promised you Amsterdam, I give you Amsterdam!
However, I have to say I am little bit disappointed. The city has old history and has its vibe however it is very dirty (litters everywhere), noisy and you really need to be really careful as a walker because the cyclists, scooters and cars cat hit you easily.
We came by tram to a Central Station and started our tour from there…
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240430/21f7330c00b0c40d2a82a32b44c755ca.jpg)
We passed Chinese restaurant on a boat…
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240430/ce40ed6a08b94788a715deb97da2982c.jpg)
…and walked towards Science museum in a form of Noem’s arch.

Then we walked around streets and also took a boat ride

As I said at the beginning, Amsterdam has its vibe but I am not young hipster, weed smoker or hooker looker to be able to appreciate it in its depth :)
Thank you everyone for great 30 days. If you are interested in our trip, I will create a separate thread with more info for following few days. Just let me know.
Cheers!
Take care and don’t let be bitten by your SAKs or other MTs and knives.
Brock - Glad to see you applied for the badge. Looks good.
That’s good to know, cheers!
I’ll do that once I am back home from my travels.
Day 30
Opening the dog medications with the knife.
