Title: The Sportsman Challenge - April 2024
Post by: marlowe221 on February 01, 2024, 10:13:33 PM
Well, I've been hanging around here long enough at this point. I've participated in several challenges myself and really enjoy them.

I've done some searching and can't find a reference to a 30 day challenge dedicated to the Sportsman and thought I would suggest one myself!

Only one blade? No scissors? Can you find creative uses for the nail file and nail cleaner? Seems like it would be a fun SAK to really spend some time with to me.

I was thinking maybe March for this challenge but would certainly be open to suggestions. Anyone interested?

I would be interested. It would give me a reason to buy a Sportsman

I’d probably pass on this one, for a couple of reasons.

For one, I alternated between a Sportsman and Cadet for the Tween 84mm/85mm challenge last June.  I felt like I got a good feel for both, but sadly found them a bit undersized for my needs and taste.

For another, I’m already committed to the Opinel challenge for March.

I currently only own 3 SAK's and a Sportsman is one of them. I'd be down to participate.

Was not familiar with the SPORTSMAN variant!

Had completed the 84mm (‘tween) Challenge in 2023 and do not recall this model mentioned.

So following at this point, as I am committed to the OPINEL challenge in March.  Actually more INVESTED as several models now part of my  knife box. 😜

A couple of people used one during that very challenge. I also did the whole challenge with mine... https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,90682.msg2419874.html#msg2419874

I stand corrected🙃☺️

Thank you , Tasky

I think the red scales threw me!

Is the Sportsman unique  because of the corkscrew and  nail file blade instead of a Phillips and Pen blade?

I’m not quite clear on what you’re asking.

To my way of thinking, the most closely related knives to the Sportsman are the Tourist (which has all the same tools, except has the small blade in place of the Sportsman’s file) and the Cadet (which has all the same front side tools as the Sportsman, but of course no back side or scale tools).

I suppose if we converted your question to a statement:  The Sportsman is unique  because of the corkscrew and nail file blade instead of a Phillips and Pen blade.

Then I could answer Jeopardy-style and say “What is the difference between the Tinker Small and the Sportsman?”
:-P

Yep, was curious if I describe the big difference from the Tinker 84mm?

There are so many variations of the  SAKs, most are only different by the back side, Corkscrew or a Phillips.
I noticed that the Sportsman also uses a nail file and not a Pen Blade.
Is there any other differences?

You’re correct.  The Sportsman has the nail file in place of the 84mm Tinker’s small blade, and corkscrew in place of the backside Phillips.  No other differences.

I wasn’t aware of the conflict with the Opinel challenge.

What about April or May? Would that work better for most folks?

I will probably participate, though I may wimp out and not post every day (I don't bother about the badges). Later works better for me.

This might be fun and a good reason to get a new sportsman with the new file. I carried mine for I don't know how many years. Got one as a kid and had it until I was a teenager and then a couple more years when I had my first doughter

Looks like April is pretty open at this point. How would everyone feel about that?

I was going to do the opposite - I only have a Sportsman with the new file so I was going to hit the big auction site for a pre-owned model with the older style file for comparison.

Alright, hearing no objections, I have asked SteveC to add the Sportsman Challenge to the schedule for April since there were no other challenges that month (and plenty of them in the following months...).

So, let's do sign ups!

I pulled my Sportsman out since we were talking about it.  My word, this one that I have is a snappy little devil! Every tool delivers a crisp, loud snap!  I think I may have oiled this when I went through an orgy of oiling SAKs a few months back.  I've had this for a couple years but somehow I never really used this knife much.  I do use a Cadet a lot for filing my nails and this is pretty much the same, just a little thicker.

It's a worthy knife.  Not terribly different from a small Tinker but if you play guitar or do things that require some nail care, it or a cadet is worth having.

There was a Tween (84mm/85mm) SAK Challenge that ran in June 2023.  A badge was created for it, and completing this Sportsman Challenge should qualify for that badge (assuming you don’t already have it).

Or am I imagining that rule?  :dunno:

During the 108mm challenge, we never really had an official list.  Just a list of people who had showed some interest at one point.  When the challenge began, I don't think there were 10 people.  Maybe eight.  I remember hearing the 10 member rule, but don't know how it got started.
I tried to send you a PM or two about the badge business, but maybe you didn't get them.  The discontinued SAK challenge that Lazar started only has three or four in the posts.  There is a badge for discontinued SAKs but with a starting a thread and 30 days of posts requirement.  Some badges need a take part in a challenge element.  I have no say in the matter, but do wonder.  Best wishes.  G

My understanding is that, depending on the requirements of each specific badge, it is possible to earn some existing badges by oneself.

However, if one is requesting a new challenge badge be created that does not already exist, then a minimum of ten members must participate in the challenge for a new badge to be created.

During the Classic Challenge I found I really liked the file (mine is the old style/not serrated) and used it more than I thought I would.  I also had not paid any attention to a Sportsman.  When this Challenge was “floated out” I started looking at the Sportsman and decided I must buy one, mainly due the included file.  I rarely use the small blade unless cutting the cork wrapper off a wine bottle.  The glass is sort of tough on the blade.  Bought the latest edition Sportsman, but, disliked the serrated file and returned it.   Found a couple used ones and bought them.  I pocket the Sportsman most mornings unless it is some type of special day that feels like a Huntsman or Workchamp is required.

Hoping we can find the required 10 participants.

I would like to see the challenge reach ten participants.  Of course I don't have a Sportsman.  I do have a Wenger Evo S10 or whatever they called them.  85mm.  Big blade, nail file, can opener, cap lifter/screwdriver, awl, corkscrew.  So unless the SAK fairy drops a Sportsman out of the sky into my mailbox, that is what I have available.
There was some talk of letting in the out-of-town relatives to Sportsman.  Let me know what you decide.  Current sign-up members as well as Marlowe.  All participants get a vote.  No hard feeling either way.  Best wishes.  G

Looking through this thread, it looks like there are 5 on the list.  If I am wrong please correct me.  What about GA1dad and his wenger.  At least it is named Sportsman.  The SAK Sportsman is so close to other 2 layer SAKs, what models do you have in mind IMR?

I would like to do another 30 day challenge.  I had a lot of fun on my first.
Also, IIRC someone mentioned a tween 84/85 challenge.  Is using that badge off limits?
Title: Re: The Sportsman Challenge - April 2024
Post by: IMR4198 on March 20, 2024, 11:26:11 PM
As far as badges, it seems that anyone who completes this challenge would be eligible for the Tween 84/85 badge.  Some already have that badge.  I think Marlowe does, so he couldn't get another.
If somewhere close to 10 sign up, then there would be a new Sportsman badge.  All would be eligible.  There weren't 10 in the 108 challenge and we all got a new badge.  I counted the first couple of days and there weren't 10.  After that I forgot about it and just did my posts.  If there was no new badge authorized for the 108 challenge, I planned on trying to get the Vintage SAK badge, since my Trooper was pre-1986.  However we did get a new badge.
I thought of using my Wenger Evo S10.  Same tool set as a Vic Sportsman, (more or less) and 1mm difference in length of the scales. I wouldn't have offered that as a substitute, but someone else brought up the possibility.  That way Marlowe (and maybe others) could have a badge if I could help to make the 10 participant goal.
The Wenger eligibility is still up in the air.  I would be happy with a "just the Vic Sportsman is eligible" decision.   Whether or not I am in, most of you could still apply for the Tween 84/85 badge.  Read the requirements for yourself and see what you think.  Best wishes.  G

Marlowe - the Sportsman seems unique because of the file.  Research shows the Cadet has a file,  Would adding the Cadet be viable and get us to 10?  May not be acceptable because of Alox?
Title: Re: The Sportsman Challenge - April 2024
Post by: marlowe221 on March 21, 2024, 04:36:20 AM
Personally, I’m in favor of including the Wenger/Evo models with the same tool set as the Vic Sportsman.

The actual Wenger Sportsman though… didn’t that one have scissors? Seems like kind of a different beast. I mean, no scissors and no small blade is kind of a big part of the “challenge” that a Vic Sportsman presents.

The Cadet - I don’t really know. Never thought about my opinion on that. Don’t we already have a Cadet Challenge? Also, you’re losing the back tools and scale tools versus the cellidor versions…  :dunno:

For some reason I thought you had the Tween badge, Marlowe.  I see you are still eligible.  With only 5 members in, that would be a good way to get your badge.  Same for the others, I think.
No reason for me to jump in.  Spring is here and lots to do besides post here.  There is a great group of participants in your challenge and it should be lots of fun.  Best wishes.  G

Yeah,,, the Swiss Sportsman really is a completely different critter. I concur that it should not be allowed in "this" challenge. I've already used it in another past challenge.

I looked up the Wenger Evo 10 online.  Lots of nice photos and list of tools.  Usual Spartan type tools with a corkscrew, can opener, blah, blah, blah.  And photos of the nail file.
I dug out my unused Wenger Evo 10 and took it out of its package.  Usual Spartan type tools, etc.  But no nail file.  Where the nail file should be is a clip point small blade.  So, the punch line to this woeful joke is... I don't have a knife that qualifies.  I suppose I could Take a Victorinox Tourist I have and cut little cross hatch marks on the small blade with a diamond file to create a fingernail tool?  Well, maybe not.
I knew I had a Wenger with a nail file, and I do, but it doesn't have a corkscrew.  So I am out with a disqualification on account of an equipment violation.
Have fun fellas.  I will follow the challenge anyway.  And sit on the bench.  Best wishes.  Gary

 :dunno:
Sounds like you have an Evo S10, which is equivalent to the Delemont S101.  Small clip point blade instead of file and locking main blade. I have one of those too and love it.  The small clip point beats the heck out of the namby pamby Vic small blade.   My first SAK back in the 60's had a small clip point.

Isn't it time for you to just buy a Sportsman?

Yes, it is an S10.  I even called it that in my earlier posts about it.  In case there is somebody out there who doesn't know, that is an Evo 10 with a locking main blade.  And of course, no nail file.  Buying anything just to do a challenge isn't in the cards.  On the bright side, the challenge can be all Victorinox Sportsman without having one odd ball Wenger along.  Best wishes.  G

Day 1
Introduction of the sportsman
Happy Easter everyone!

I have obviously some standard tuning with small screwdriver and a pin. That is a must for all my SAKs…

I may be posting a little behind you all due to living in the Pacific time zone. But I’m excited to see this thing get started!

Day 1:

Allow me to introduce you to my Sportsman, acquired in April 2022.

(https://i.postimg.cc/xjzhSK9B/IMG-4506.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/4nXB6H71)

I carry my SAKs with a Nite-Ize S-biner #1 clip, either black or stainless, depending if I wear light or dark pants. I like it because it can also be unclipped from the knife when I use the keyring-side tools. It gets clipped to the corner of the left front pocket, so that it hangs vertically.

The right front pocket is normally home to a modern one hand open folder.

I like the 84mm frame size. It is for all practical purposes just as robust as the 91mm’s in my world. The beefier 93mm’s however were my first love.

Prepping the Sportsman for the Challenge.  A bit of honing to ensure it is fully capable.

DAY 1

A year ago I bought the Canada Flag Sportsman. I got it more as a novelty. I liked the Canada flag because, you guessed it, I am Canadian.

I mainly carried a black , alox Cadet. I even did a couple reviews of my Cadet. I loved the cadet so much, or so I thought. But time and time again I found myself going to the Sportsman. The Cadet and Sportsman have the same blade, screw drivers and nail file. The sportsman however, has a few extra tools, while remaining roughly the same size. Not to mention , it has a beautiful Canadian flag on it.

Here are the tools on the Sportsman :

Tweezers / Can opener / Screwdriver 3 mm / Bottle opener / Screwdriver 6 mm / Wire stripper / Reamer, punch and sewing awl / Nail file / Nail cleaner / Toothpick / Key ring / Corkscrew / Blade, large

DIMENSIONS
Height: 15 mm

Length: 84 mm

Width: 26 mm

Weight: 52 g

Before I even realized what happened, I started carrying the sportsman more and more. Now I carry it most days of the week

Its an 84mm SAK so it fits great in that little change pocket in my jeans. I am not at all an outdoorsman so I dont need a saw. I LOVE Victorinox scissors but they make it too thick in my pocket. I do carry a little classic SD on my key ring so if I need scissors they are there.

I constantly use the nail file. This new style, I believe it was a Wagner design ( but could be wrong) is way more aggressive. Its fantastic. It does a much better job at filing my nails. My nails grow super fast so I use it often. I find I use the nail file for all sorts of things. I have filed down an old nail with this new mighty design, used it to scrape something from between cracks in the table, or wall. I have used it to pull nails out of a wall, clean my nails, and to scrape away sticky stuff many times. I use the nail file more than any other tool.

The Blade I mostly use to open mail, packages, or to cut string. It a perfect size for the things I do.

I have never been big on corkscrews but then those new little screwdrivers came out that you can put in the cork screw and they are great. On my sportsman I added a little poker into the corkscrew that is great for resetting little electronic devices  or for popping out micro SD cards. Some times you just need a tiny poker for tiny jobs. I have even found uses for the corkscrew .

I then added a red toothpick and red tipped tweezers , and a red lanyard . Now it looks SWEET.

To my surprise I use the toothpick a lot. I have one in my  little SD that is on my key ring BUT I dont always have my keys on me. The cadet didnt have a toothpick so I didnt realize how much I would use it till I got the Sportsman.

I have used the reamer to scrape at things or to punch holes into leather. I use the screwdrivers all the time. I love the flat head to pry things open.

I really like the 2 layer SAKs. they are perfect for me in the office.

SO after a year, the Sportsman has slowly won my heart.

I carry it almost every day. I only swap it out to give other SAKs a day or two pocket time.  I was an alox guy for a long time but it does feel good to once again have the classic red cellidor scales in my pocket. Its even nicer with my Canada flag on it.

The Sportsman Challenge starts tomorrow!

Any last minute sign ups? Think about it while you file that ragged thumbnail with the file on your Sportsman….

You convinced me. I'd love to sign up if it's not already too late. This will be my first challenge here and it looks like a fun one to get involved with. If I remember right we didn't have such a thing as these monthly challenges when I was last active on the forum, but there's a good chance my memory might be letting me down. What's a decade or so between friends?

Anyway, I also realised that I somehow have quite a few SAKs with the pattern that ought to qualify for participation, I guess that's largely because it was kind of the old Wenger baseline toolset.  I'll have to dig them out and let them see the light of day, or at least get some pocket time!

On day 1 the Sportsman got some use in the kitchen to open up a new packet of mature cheddar, and then proved itself to be an excellent slicer of cheese. Yes, the apple is tiny.

Not cutting cheese here, not filing taxes today either.  Just a bit of necessary nail file work.

Seems like we got off to a great start here! I'm very much enjoying everyone's photos and hearing your thoughts about this little Sportsman.

Day 2 saw the can opener opening a can, but maybe not in quite the way intended. With a little effort I probably could have pried up this recalcitrant ring pull with a finger nail, but it might have ended badly. Soup for tea was actually pretty good with a bit of toast. It was sundried tomato, lentil, and smoked paprika flavour, for those that might be curious.

Some people seem to have an aversion to having a can opener on their SAKs in 2024. Apparently because we have pull tabs for all cans these days. I do not understand this reasoning, because it is such a versatile and multi-purpose tool.

I particularly like it as a thin and light pry tool (like you showed above @Spatha), a makeshift hook, or a scraper with the circular edge. Not to mention as a 2D Phillips driver or actual can opener. I still find scenarios where I have to cut open an “old skool” can, or where the modern pull tab broke off. It is one of my favourite tools to be honest.

The sharpened surface on the can opener has a lot of uses.  I've often used it as a ream to enlarge a hole.

I agree - I am in favor of the can opener for all of the reasons you listed. There’s a reason some folks refer to it as “the MacGyver tool” or “the Swiss Army knife of the Swiss Army knife.” It’s mostly limited by your imagination!

That said, I wouldn’t mind a standard model with the new tool, just for the sake of variety.

I also wouldn’t mind seeing the Sportsman’s file on a Cellidor 91mm SAK either.

It is a bit hard to see, but, it is the Sportsman in use.  Had to crop photo to reduce file size.  My 7th grade Grand-daughter entered an “egg drop” event at the library.  It is a STEM event where a bunch of kids get together to each design a container and method to soften the impact so the uncooked egg does not break when the assembly is dropped from a certain height.  The library has two floors with a balcony about 15 feet above the ground floor.  One girl wrapped her egg in a box inside bubble wrap.  Others made a container with softening inside.  My grand-daughter placed the egg inside a softened container and added a parachute.  Hers fell the slowest as the parachute was the largest of the bunch at about 3 feet on a side.  She had taped the box closed and needed a way to open the box and inspect the egg.  Sportsman put to good use. BTW,  Her egg did not break.  She was presented with a pair of eclipse glasses.  I got my SAK back.

Day 4:

Opening packages is probably the most common task for my pocket knives. This one contains an assortment of stainless steel and high tensile nuts and bolts. I plan to use them on my box trailer, to fit 4 rails and lashdown points to the inside of the load box.

(https://i.postimg.cc/VNtYRmRh/IMG-4518.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/f3wnW417)

(https://i.postimg.cc/YCZrYh1g/IMG-4519.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/tsdGHRvC)

I do not use a SAK to break down the boxes, they are a bit too small and simply dull too quickly. For that task my absolute favourite is a Spyderco K390 Endela wharncliffe. I keep it in the kitchen drawer specifically to handle the recycling. High carbide and high hardness tool steel is a marvel, and continues to cut cleanly for months.

Myron, sorry to hear about your increased workload. You should maybe mention to your boss that you deserve a pay rise for all your hard work. Anyway, at least when payday comes, with a bit of luck, you might be able to treat yourself to something new and shiny...

Marlowe, do I see mangetout trimmings there, or some other pea or bean? Mangetout are one of my favourite veggies

Jeff, the egg drop sounds like so much fun! When I was a kid I can remember painting eggs for Easter, also at my local library! If I remember correctly we made hole in each end of the egg with a pin so that we could blow out the contents before painting them. It was fun, but I would be much more into the engineering challenge than the artistic one. Big parachute for the win! You must be a proud Grandfather.

Day 3 for me saw some use of the scale tools. The toothpick is often used quite a bit for its intended purpose after lunch. Also today I somehow snagged a fingernail, so the file came to the rescue. This new file seems very aggressive to me, but perhaps I just need to get used to it. At the moment I still prefer the old style. It seems that both types have pros and cons.

I felt the same when I first started using the new file. It simply chewed through nails and felt waaay too aggressive. Over time I got used to the new file, and now I prefer it. It is very efficient, and although I have not used it to file anything other than nails, I think it capable enough to handle harder tasks.

I took this picture a while ago to compare the SAK nail files I have around.

I love the new style nail file. With the old style I would file my nail , put the SAK away , then realize the nail still felt rough. I often had to file a nail several times even with a new file. This new file is a beats. once you get used to it , its much more efficient . I also find I can file down small metal objects as well. Its amazing

Snow peas this time! I’m afraid I don’t know what a mangetout is…
Mangetout "eat all" is the French word for snow peas.  You eat all: the pea and the pod.

Have to go on an out of town road trip today.  Sportsman will be getting a lot of pocket time sitting in the car today.  Seems like his tongue is sticking out in disgust.

DAY 4 !!!!
You set the bar pretty high!

Still looking for a unique model Sportsman.

Day before yesterday, had a shoelace result is a knot, a very tight knot because I was certain it would work free the harder I pulled🤪

Gave me excuse to go check my two EVOs, both have Corkscrews, and it did the trick 👍 :hatsoff:

One EVO has the same toolset, nail file is different, the other has a locking main blade and a small clip blade in place of the file.  One is 3 layer the other is two.

So Sportsman remains on the list, Corkscrew and nail file blade are pluses.

Will continue to monitor👍

PS:  I am not a well versed SAK type! But, love learning the tips and tricks of the veterans.

I started with walking the dog in the forrest

Then I cut some pear and put it in my porridge
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240404/09e3d059ef52338f266553450ebbd910.jpg)

Then I used the pin to push pins in my watch band

In the evening I cut onion and made a tuna spread for the dinner. Unfortunately, I didn’t take a picture as I needed to hurry- my wife was hungry :D

Great posts from everyone again today. Canuckdad, those mints are so cool! Made me dig out my old Penguin 60s edition of The Tell-tale Heart. Poe's short stories really pack a punch.

Day 4 here saw some use of the multitool multitool. The can opener is perfect for easing open split rings, especially little fiddly ones. The key ring that this small tape measure came equipped with was far too large for my purposes, so the Sportsman helped me swap in something of more reasonable proportions.

Day 4

I remember reading somewhere that the tip of the file on the Sportsman can sometimes be used on small Phillips screws.

Well, it can!

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

As I was using my laptop today I kept feeling the actual case shift and make some creaking sounds. I have repaired and rehabbed many laptops in my time so I flipped it over and found that a couple of the screws that help hold the case together had worked themselves loose.

The nail file was able to snug them up!

You have to be careful though - you’re not making a lot of contact with the screw and these size 0 screws are often very easy to strip. But it worked!

Day 6:

My SAKs usually ride shotgun as a secondary knife, and they do not see a lot of cutting action, except as backups. The tools get a workout instead. I believe I was still on the factory edge after two years of ownership. I noticed the Sportsman was not gliding cleanly through paper and cardboard anymore, so it was time for some tender loving edge care.

It was a long work week and my sleep deficit had been building up, so last night I was feeling rather tired and didn't get around to posting anything. Today will have to be catch up day, so expect another post some time later on...

Day 5 didn't see any use at work, but the Sportsman came out as soon as I arrived home for cheddar duty once again. Apple and cheese is definitely one of my favourite snacks. You've already seen a cheesy action shot though, so here's something a bit different.

This one is the Wenger Evo Soft Touch 10. The Wenger tools differ a bit from the Victorinox Sportsman versions but I think it might still fit the criteria for this challenge? These scales feel really nice in the hand but I've never really carried it because I'm not sure how durable they would be getting bounced around in my pocket with keys and other junk. You can't really see from the photos, but it does have tweezers and toothpick in the scales as well.

It started easy by opening new granola
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240406/41110767d44bbb9844a42037612a16f4.jpg)

There was an event called “clean your country” where volunteers get together and collect a garbage (city, village, park, forest wherever they want). We cleaned our neighborhood
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240406/788f33041b11d4748b7c7c260670eb6d.jpg)

I have to admit I cheated the challenge as for some tasks I needed to use something more heavy duty…
I hope that you can forgive me this exception.

In the evening I took my wife to Ennio Morricone’s concert. It was amazing! I couldn’t carry the Sportsman though because I wouldn’t pass the security gate…
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240406/b9e24438013b258c56d3157fc76b8438.jpg)

Good night!

Enjoying a smooth South African Cabernet Sauvignon with my wife. This is the last bottle I have at home that still uses a cork. Most modern winemakers have moved to screw-tops over the last few years. I understand they are cheaper to manufacture and they seal more reliably. I will miss the corks when they finally disappear.

Nice Red there Brock (both glass and SAK). I don't think the change has done the Portuguese cork forests any good as removing the bark is important for tree vitality I believe. Some things don't need to change just because they can.

I had to open a new bag of morning hot drink mix.  Sportsman scissors to cut off the sealed top and add a “thumb notch” to allow easy opening of zip top.
The Dandy is caffeine free and has ingredients that are friendly to preventing another heart attack.

  I have same issue!  I will admit my knowledge and experience with SAKS is limited.

I  thought, after I completed the Tween challenge (84/85 models) I was getting a grasp of things.

The Evo14 I have has scissors, the Evo10 does not.

I was  thinking I may just need to take Sharpie and write the SAK model name on the back side of every main blade I have…

Huntsman, Tinker, small Tinker, FieldMaster. E14, Cadet, Recruit, Spartan, Climbèr.   Craftsman, and a Ranger on the way.

Just thinking   Most likely why I have not pulled the trigger on a Sportsman, NO SCISSORS ✂️, Nail file, but no scissors   But then there is the CORK SCREW, gotta have the cork screw.

Day 7

Pretty quiet Sunday around here. I used the blade to humanely put to rest an aging and sagging balloon from my daughter’s birthday back in February. And I used the nail tip to scrape some unidentified crap off the kitchen table where my son usually eats.

Kids certainly create some SAK opportunities!

Day 8

Picnic in the park (lamb curry pies) over lunch with the family. It is school holidays at the moment, so everyone is at home.

I got a splinter in my finger, near the tip of the needle, and performed a successful minor surgery to remove it.

Sorry, but I can't continue the fruit theme. I ate a banana and some blueberries but no knife was involved. Also I seem to be getting behind again so it's a double day to catch up.

Day 7 saw the small screwdriver working some Phillips magic to tighten up a couple of loose screws on the lock of my tool chest.

Today on day 8, I cut my nails using my Wenger Swiss Clipper as usual. I wanted to give the Sportsman another chance, so I filed the nails of one hand with the Sportsman file, and the other with the Wenger file. After comparing the two directly, for me the Sportsman's new-style file is too grabby, so given the choice I'll stick to my old habits. The first SAK I obtained that features this new type of file is the Vic Executive, which I got back in 2016. It sits on my desk all the time and I've never taken to using the file on that one over all those years. Don't get me wrong, the file on the Sportsman is highly effective, just a bit too much so for me.

I agree about the file.  I originally bought a new Sportsman and did not like the file.  Then I discovered the “old” file by using SAKWiki.  FleaBay to the rescue and just in time for the Challenge.  The Sportsman with the “new” file was returned.

Doing some shopping and yard work today. Knife removed the tag on my new shirt and was used to cut free a pen.
Used the screwdriver to get the ant bait ready to go. They have been trying to take over the yard lately, so measures needed to be taken.

I am on the other side when it comes to the file. I never achieved satisfying results with the old style file. I much prefer the new style and wish Victorinox would add them to the  Classics as well.

I also prefer the newer file. I have the older design on the Delemont knives in my drawer and my 58mm SAKs.

For one thing, they seem to be aggressive enough to file more than just fingernails...

I removed the wrapping from two new plastic storage trays, those with the dividers. I must have bought them some time ago, and stuck them in the garage cupboard for a rainy day. Well, it was actually raining today, and since I needed to reorganise my SAK and other knife spares, they came in handy.

That looks delicious @AndyAaron...

The allergies get me too in spring and summer @Jeffjeeptj. 👍 Fortunately we are now going into the cooler months.

That is a good usecase for the file @MasterofDisaster. Sometimes I also have to smooth down scratched plastic or injection molding seams. I'll remember to file them next time.

Day 11

New salt shaker had a sticker sealing the mechanism and holes. It did not peel off cleanly, and I ended up with tiny sticker circles blocking the holes. I used the pin to unblock them. The pin was clean, no worries!

Well, it ain’t pretty, but it typically goes one of three ways:

1.  They take the time and effort to fetch a dedicated tool (e.g. screwdriver or scissors).  Effective, but not terribly efficient.

2.  They ignore the issue, e.g. that loose screw stays loose.

3.  They resort to using the wrong tools because it’s what they have handy, e.g. using keys, a ballpoint pen, or even their teeth to try to open a package.

Nailed it.  :D

The irony is that they would frown upon someone for carrying and using a tool, because "why would you carry a dangerously sharp object in our modern society"? But then they would go on to rip or gnaw open the next wrapper or package like a Neanderthal!

Mini rant off.

Hi Bill, I like it more than I thought I would! It is a proper fistful of knife, with substantial heft. Lots of brass and Ebony in the handle. The weight gives the impression that is a larger knife than it really is. It is the same size as a large Sebenza, and I estimate it is slightly smaller than a Spyderco Endura.

The F&F is good, the action is excellent and the included leather sheath is of high quality, so you get a whole lot of bang for your US $65. The whole package oozes rugged old-school quality and reliability. It is a bit too beastly to carry as an EDC, so I think it will take up residence in the center console of my car.

I am glad I got one. It is a very affordable piece of knife history. 👍

We mostly live in a world of EZ-open pull tabs these days.

I used the nail file for its intended purpose.

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

It is definitely an aggressive file but I have found that, instead of rubbing the file across my fingernail, it seems to work better for me to hold the file still and rub my fingernail across the stationary file.

Just thought I would offer that tip to n case it might work for someone else!

As Nate, Brock and Fast Bill indicated, progress happens.  In this case the electric can opener failed an early life (not anywhere close to the duration of the prior one) AND the progressive lift top can did not make it to this item.
Old technology Sportsman put into service today.  The few SAKs I own will never collectively have their can opener tool dull in my lifetime.  No more electrics, not even a scooter.

It always amused me that the can opener was invented long after the can. Mind you canning is a pretty reliable way of storing food so there'll be a need for the SAK can opener for a while yet :like:

Day 13

Nothing special today. Visiting my parents this weekend. We started by walking our dogs and then worked in the garden for the whole day.

This is a semi-feral stray I adopted after my two elderly dogs handed in their dinner pails.  He's been living on the property under a shed for at least two years but when the dogs were around he made himself scarce.  It took months to gain his trust.  He is also named Freddie!

Nicely done, Bunk!   My dad similarly adopted a feral, which became a lifelong companion for him.  I wish you the best with Freddie.

Thanks Myron.  I've been a dog person for a few decades but the last few months with this cat have been very rewarding.

Rainy day, decided to oil the Sportsman.

Sportsman keeping an eye on a kitchen knife reprofiling job...

(https://i.postimg.cc/qqJq3k9Y/IMG-4622.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/VrhzycsB)

I bought a Tormek a few months ago, but only recently acquired the coarse and extra fine diamond wheels to complete the set. I am still familiarising myself with the machine, so I am using a cheap kitchen knife to practice on before I unleash it on the more expensive knives. I was well pleased with how this reprofiling job went down. Even bevels @ 13 dps, and a screaming sharp edge. I see I nicked the bolster in the process, oh well, lesson learnt.

Day 16

A few drops of oil for the Sportsman.

(https://i.postimg.cc/mZzqKtr2/IMG-4625.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/nMx0DV76)

Here it is with a well carried Spyderco Gayle Bradley 2, and a new Boker Barlow (integral copper and desert ironwood). 🤩

I prefer Victorinox's oil on SAKs, and most back lock or slip joint knives. I think it is because the high friction between the blade and back spring requires a thicker oil to get a smooth operation.

The Nano oil I have is fairly thin, but works well on other types of locks or detent ball/tracks where the friction is not so high.

I am often too lazy to walk a few steps to get the oven mitts , so I would use my pocket knife to handle items that are too hot to touch. In this case, after toasting bread in the air fryer, to pull the wire grid out, and nudge the toast onto a plate.

(https://i.postimg.cc/BbKWJvcD/IMG-4628.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/XB4184P7)

Working from home today, my lunch was: smashed avo, juice of a leftover lime, basil pesto, a dollop of mayonaise and S&P all mixed together on buttered toast, and a marmalade toast on the side, because why not?  :D And rooibos tea.

Package duty again...

I figured my life would be incomplete until I experience a classic like a Buck 110. My first "expensive" pocket knife was a Buck, a small skinner-type folder probably 20 years ago. This is my second Buck.

My apologies for being a source of temptation...

To be honest, if you like bigger knives IMO you cannot go wrong for $65... It is a chunk of knife plus a solid sheath for the price of a Pioneer X.  I will take a few comparison photos tomorrow in the light.

Brock, that Buck has invaded my brain, too.  Of course, the 110 is a “real” Buck.  All I have is this Buck Strider and a Buck Wenger to move over and make room for a 110.
Today, the Sportsman has a job to do opening the bag of a right angle male cord cap so I can better utilize an extension cord in a tight space.
I am keeping in mind, if I let the smoke out of the new cord cap when I first energize it, the extension cord will not work.

Today I used Sportsman to pull out the old battery from wall clock.

Otherwise it was quite busy day and I didn’t need to use the knife for anything else.

Regarding Bucks, I don’t have 110, I used to have 112 but I gave it to my grandfather. I still have Vantage Pro that I really love.
However, it looks like the next challenge after this Sportsman one there can be Buck 110 :) at least it would be a reason to buy the knife ;)

Apologies for the Buck 110 detour, but since a few people showed interest I will post a few comparison pictures...

The 110 is in the same size-class as the PM2, Sebenza, SAK RangerGrip 130mm.

Spyderco GB2
CRK Large Sebenza
Buck 110
SAK RangerGrip 79
Spyderco Military

(https://i.postimg.cc/T3Tcvqmx/IMG-4639.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/cr53Q3Xk)

It is much thicker than the modern folders, with generously contoured edges. It's impressively ergonomic without a pocket clip, and fills the hand nicely.

(https://i.postimg.cc/fTNcYj8d/IMG-4640.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Tht56mM2)

But... it's a boat anchor in comparison to the modern lightweights, at almost twice the weight of a standard G10 PM2 (207g vs 105g)! The extra weight comes with the territory - if you can't handle the heat get out of the kitchen... That brass frame surely feels solid though.

My impression is that the 110 is a blue collar no-nonsense workhorse. It dwarfs the little Boker Barlow gentlemans folder I showed before. Copper, brass and wood-heavy picture below...

Bill it is a good combo, you should try it!

I grew up as a kid in South Africa with avo on toast and sweet rooibos tea, but only after I came to Aus did I realise that "smashed avo" is A Big Thing on this island... You can order it from practically any hip city cafe for a pricely sum. It will always be a nostalgic favourite for me.

Useless fact of the day: Rooibos tea is indigenous to the arid west coast of South Africa.

Opening a clamshell package containing a Spyderco M/F pocket stone.

(https://i.postimg.cc/GhJxvPqN/IMG-4654.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/svxWrWF9)

In the same package I also had two Spyderco ultrafine triangle Sharpmaker stones. I like my edges on the coarser side, so I've not had a use for these ultra-fine stones before. But, after watching this insightful video about deburring, I decided to give them a try.

Up to now I've been using the SM fine ceramic stones for deburring, and had relatively good results. I suspect however that they are perhaps too coarse for dealing with a very fine invisible burr, and I can probably do better with the UF's.

Perhaps someone else also finds this clip interesting:

I have fond childhood memories about my mom making us sweet onion (not sure about the cultivar) sandwiches. She'd butter slices of white bread, put slices of raw sweet onion on top, with a bit of salt and white pepper. Onions are perhaps a bit of an aquired taste, but I always loved those sarmies. :tu:

Still need to catch up.

Day 16

Sportsman came along walking the dogs on a forest trail. File was used to smooth a chipped finger nail.

Day 17

Used the knife to open a blister pack with a new padlock.
Also used the can opener to tighten some Philips screws on a lamp.

A couple of days late, but as the owner of several Buck 110s, I can share a few opinions and observations.

It must be kept in mind that Buck has offered and continues to offer numerous variations of the 110.  All are solid quality.

The classic version is also a good value for the money. And if you want to own an iconic piece of knife history that is still capable of serious work, go ahead and get one.

However, if someone told me they wanted an EDC folder with about a 3.75” blade, my first response wouldn’t necessarily be “Get a Buck 110!”

As others have mentioned, one consideration is the weight.  The classic Buck 110 and the most closely related variations are quite heavy, largely due to the sizable brass or nickel silver bolsters.  Buck lists the classic version (ebony scales & brass bolsters) at 7.2 oz; I have a version with S30V steel, G10 scales, and nickel silver bolsters.  It’s an absolute tank, but comes in even heavier at 7.6 oz.

The weight problem is resolved with the Slim and LT series 110s (weighing roughly 3 oz give or take, depending on specific variant).  And I actually like the modified blade shape of the Slim lines better than that of the original 110.  However, their thin profile makes them less comfortable in hand.

The sweet spot might be the Hunter Sport.  It retains the hand-filling handle dimensions of the original, but thanks mostly to aluminum bolsters, it is significantly lighter than the classic 110 at only 4.6 oz.

Personally, if I’m going to carry a larger locking folder, I generally prefer it to OHO & OHC.  The classic 110 wasn’t designed for either, but it can be OHO if one pinches the blade and gives it the so-called “biker drop”.

Some later versions incorporate a thumb stud.  The knife of course wasn’t originally designed with this in mind, nor have the actions been tuned to facilitate it, so IMO it’s an example of slapping a thumb stud onto an existing design and calling it OHO.  It is possible to OHO my 110s with the thumb studs, but it is neither quick nor easy as the actions are very stiff.  I suppose they might loosen up eventually with extended use.

And if there is a safe way to OHC a Buck 110, I haven’t been able to work out what it is.

I'm mostly a back end/infrastructure guy these days. But I work at a small non-profit organization and have, more or less, become Mr. Fix-it no matter where in the stack the problem lies...  8)  In fact, I think a change of title (don't really care) and salary (do care) are in order soon.

I'm sure you'll do well on your exam! I've spent a lot of time with AWS but never got around to a doing a cert. The current job is all MS stuff so we're on Azure - Microsoft cuts non-profits a really sweet deal, so it's hard to say no.

I think a change of title (don't really care) and salary (do care) are in order soon.

I’m not in IT, but as a general observation I would say there is value in the former because of its potential to impact the latter…

1.  If your internal HR looks at comps/benchmarking to evaluate your compensation vs. market, your title probably impacts this evaluation.

2.  If you’re talking with external recruiters about what market-competitive compensation looks like for someone with your skill set, and or looking at other job opportunities, your title probably impacts these.

Day 26

The Sportsman supervised a science school project I am doing with my Gr 8 daughter.

She has to build a Middle Age siege weapon, and do a video and write-up. She chose to build a trebuchet, one of those sling catapults that was used to break down castle walls.

Naturally this means I am researching, designing and building a trebuchet, while my girl passes the tools and does the odd jobs... The video and write-up is on her!

Figuring out how to make a counterweight
(https://i.postimg.cc/dtcxTjvb/IMG-4730.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Hj32q5rz)

It is surprisingly tricky to get right, you have to tune the arm length, the counterweight mass, the sling length and the sling release trigger just right to get a good projectile trajectory.

Thanks Jeff!

No detailed plans, we kinda winged it with the materials we had available. We ended up with the critical dimensions in the screenshot I posted. We had to adjust where we hanged the counterweight on the arm for max leverage, hence the extra hole, and also had to increase the counterweight mass. The tin is full of nails and rocks.

We had to tune the sling release rod angle at the other end of the arm to release at the correct 45' angle. Without that mechanism the projectile hits the ground right in front.

Day 28

I noticed this rusty galvanised washer on my box trailer. I tried to be clever and measure the bolt size with the awl, so that I could fetch the right size spanners from the garage to replace the washer.

I was out by a mm, and had to walk again...  but I got there eventually.

Day 28

Bruges, Belgium

Very nice city with lot of history.

We arrived yesterday and went today for a walk. I am not sure what are the rules here about carrying knives so I tried to take some pictures secretly

Saint Saviour’s Cathedral, cathedral with one of the most beautiful interiors I’ve seen…

Very nice photos Andy.  Wife and I love the European historical buildings.

We buy organic oatmeal because of the industry practice of spraying the  non-organic plants with glyphosate at the end of the growing season to speed harvesting.  Disregarding the “do not cut” instructions on the box.

Day 29

Still in Bruges. We took a different walk today, with less tourists.
The weather was great! We started in the old city centre…

… and walked through the streets to see some old churches…
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240429/bf43b38ea737824744d48b2d921bc018.jpg)

…and towers…
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240429/3d8bb40ddffd3b6d6d0ed437cd1c54b8.jpg)

… and nice neighborhoods…
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240429/e833a63d32b22e9a46e6de85880ab265.jpg)

When we came to the bank of the river with mills, Sportsman got really tired and needed some refreshments…
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240429/c8a07d0f5cd115f15761a0fff270c321.jpg)

Only after that we could continue our walk

We left Bruges for good and drove 3,5 hours to Amsterdam. We arrived there in the evening so we just had a nice dinner in the hotel.
Since the Sportsman didn’t do anything today I asked the waiter not to open a bottle of beer for my wife and I did it myself :)

Day 30 - last day of the challenge :(

I promised you Amsterdam, I give you Amsterdam!

However, I have to say I am little bit disappointed. The city has old history and has its vibe however it is very dirty (litters everywhere), noisy and you really need to be really careful as a walker because the cyclists, scooters and cars cat hit you easily.
We came by tram to a Central Station and started our tour from there…
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240430/21f7330c00b0c40d2a82a32b44c755ca.jpg)

We passed Chinese restaurant on a boat…
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240430/ce40ed6a08b94788a715deb97da2982c.jpg)

…and walked towards Science museum in a form of Noem’s arch.

It is a nice place where people can get together and chill.

As you stand on the top there is nice view around.

Then we walked into the old city centre and obviously we walked through Red District
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240430/5a6aabf44f1155bb21af5d54548bc9bb.jpg)

We finished our trip at Van Gogh museum
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240430/c95585ad04832a1814badef440ec2b49.jpg)

As we walked over 11km we needed some refreshments from time to time :)

As I said at the beginning, Amsterdam has its vibe but I am not young hipster, weed smoker or hooker looker to be able to appreciate it in its depth :)

Thank you everyone for great 30 days. If you are interested in our trip, I will create a separate thread with more info for following few days. Just let me know.
Cheers!
Take care and don’t let be bitten by your SAKs or other MTs and knives.

Day 30

Another quiet day of hacking away at code I barely understand sometimes…

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

Overall, I’ve enjoyed the challenge and, though I didn’t have too many creative uses of the nail file myself, it’s been interesting to see what all you lovely people hav been doing with the Sportsman’s claim to fame as well as all the other normal SAK tools.

One thing I have learned though - over time I have gradually come to prefer the 91mm frame over the 84. A couple of years back I said just the opposite! But circumstances change and so do we. I have also come to prefer a thicker knife over time, as much for the easy grip as for the additional tools.

I hope everyone had a good challenge!

Thank you everyone for a month of interesting pictures and uses from around the world!

The past month had been my longest continuous carry ever of a 84mm cellidor model. I usually gravitate towards a 93mm alox.

This month gave me a new-found appreciation for the little Sportsman. It is comfortable to carry, multi-talented and very capable. I thought I would notice the smaller frame more, but the Sportsman rose to every challenge, and is less obtrusive than a 91mm. I came to realise that I prefer the Sportsman to the larger Spartan, because of the inclusion of the nail file. It is a well-rounded standalone package, and it has earned its keep.  :tu:

I am pleased however to feel a sturdy 93mm Pioneer in the hand again! Minimal and bombproof, it always revs my engine!

I will leave you with this comparison shot. Greetings until next time...

Hey Jeff!

I was a little bit unsure about "which badge" a few days ago... I noticed you got the "tween" one recently, which made sense since it was literally the only one in the list that seemed to be appropriate. 👍

This👇is the one to apply for if anyone else is curious.
