Used the can opener for the first time ever!
on: August 14, 2017, 06:53:56 AM
I used the can opener on my Swiss Champ for the first time ever- first time on any SAK for that matter- this weekend. I've never needed it and could easily have used a can opener from the kitchen but decided to test myself.

The pop top aluminum piece busted on a can of dog food. So rather than walk the arduous 20 feet to the kitchen, I pulled out my Swiss Champ and unfolded the can opener. It's a heck of a lot easier than I imagined and I was pleased for the "exercise." Now I have no qualms about using it in the future.  :drink:

I know I must be in the minority with my inexperience with the can opener. But having joined this group, I committed myself to using every tool in my SAK. It's amazing how useful things are when one is aware of the tool chest in their pocket/on belt!

Thats a great way to look at it.  Its good to familiarize yourself with each tool.  I have a easier time with VIC can openers vs Wenger.  I think mostly because I use VIC more.

True! But I wouldn't use the SAK scaler for that. Instead, I use it for measuring things in the field, when I photo document. That's got to count for something!  :climber:

I'd also typically go to my Spyderco (PM2 or Yojimbo 2) blade for a lot of tasks I can use any number of tools on my SAK for- it's better for both my Spyderco and the job at hand to use a more appropriate tool on the SAK!

I'm not a fan of the regular can opener. I'll go as far as saying that I hate using it. I far prefer a combo tool which works backwards and combines two functions in the same tool.

And other people hate the combo tool because it's not very strong for screwing duties.

Seems like the Combo Tool is just a little bit faster, too. I keep a waiter in my kitchen drawer and it gets a lot of use. I find it more satisfying to open up awlmost anything with a Swiss Army knife.

So how about putting a real screwdriver on the other side in the slot now free? :) *mumble* like on my LM Charge where I have a combo opener and a real screwdriver *mumble* :D

In truth i only used the can opener on a sak to actually open a can once (maybe twice) in the 30 or so years i use and carry Sak's, yet i use the can opener almost daily for something or another...  :ahhh

Too true, Barry.

Although, I like to use the cap lifter, sideways, to raise the pull tab away from the can top. Makes it much easier to then use the hook to remove the pull tab lids.

Between making chili and opening dog food and coconut milk cans I use my can opener at least on a weekly basis...

The crochet hook, putting the fun back in to pull tabs since 1991.  :D

Actually,  even though a P38 smokes both Wenger and Vic, I prefer the Vic opener since it can be used as a small blade.  Forget your 58mm, and have a hangnail? No problem.  Just use the Vic can opener blade as a scraper.  Works really well on fingernails. Clean it before can duty, though.

Oh,  I "forced" my two daughters to learn to use the P38, and SAK openers, just in case.
