what have I brought?
on: February 09, 2026, 03:05:45 PM
So I was browsing ebay, as one does as the daily act of escapism, and I saw this little hatchet / adze head combo. I thought to myself: neat! Not that I need a camp hatchet, but why the smurf not. And I ordered it.

Ok, so the hatchet head has what I would describe as a parting line (see attachments). And the only two reasons I can think of for that is its either cast, which for an axe cant be the right manufacturing method, or its die forged. So what the holly smurf have I bought? Is it an actually usefull hatchet head and I proceed to haft it, or is it a hatchet shaped lump of cast iron, and I throw it away?

Well, I tend to agree that it appears to be cast.  I also agree that the best axes are forged.

I see some suspiciously similar looking items for sale on Etsy here in the US.  Reviews are generally pretty good, though several reviewers point out that it appears to be cast.  However, the Etsy seller claims these are hand forged, which is clearly not true and therefore a red flag.

I don’t know what you paid for yours, but for what they are selling for here, one could get a quality hatchet from the likes of Estwing or Fiskars.

No way is this hand forged. Die forged maybe. But my fast googling shows no such offerings.

Also there seems to be some pitting going on on the hammer head. Which is not something one would expect on a forged piece.

On the other hand, it eppears to be quite sharp, which is not something I would expect a cast iron beeing capable of. Though I am by no means an expert.

I'll give the smurfing thing some good whacks with a hammer and see if it shatters....   :twak:

I say use it until it breaks.  Just make sure to wear your safety squint goggles when you use it.
