Victorinox Cadet
on: May 24, 2009, 03:17:52 PM

If I go out without a plier-based MT, I most often carry a SAK to backup my EDC folder or fixed blade. I even back up the Skeletool I own with a SAK, for the much better blade on SAKs, and the additional tools they have. My basic and most often used SAK favorite is the Cadet model I will review now.

The Cadet is a very basic tool.

Main blade
bottle opener with 6mm flathead and wire stripper
can opener with 3mm flathead
nailfile and cleaner

Oh, and a lanyard ring. That´s it. No tweezers, no toothpick like on the most SAK. That´s the price you have to pay to get those beautyfull Aloc scales. I just love them. They are nicely textured to feel perfect in the hand, and they look great. There are more colors out now, but when I got it there was just the standard silver Alox scales, but to be honest, I might most likely have taken them anyways.

The Cadet is lightweight and very thin. It just slips in your pocket, and you will forget about it till you need it. There is a plate on the backside for engraving, so it makes a perfect gift too. Just love it!

They are great little EDC knives aren't they.  :)  Like you said, they just disappear in your pocket.

I absolutely love the Cadet and other Alox handled Swiss knives.  Unfortunately so do my friends.   I've acquired a few of these beaut's over the years in trades and the like and my comrades (non knifers) allow them to just disappear in their pockets because they like them so much.  No kidding I cannot hang on to any of them.   They do make excellent gifts, and friendship reciprocators.   The next one I get I'm going to make sure before I leave the store they actually engrave my full name on it maybe that will allow me to actually hang on to one.  :)

I know, there is no other knife I know of that is so attractive to non-knife people. Maybe the Swiss Card comes close, had to give away some of them too (can review if wanted) - I guess it is just because SAKs and Swiss cards are so usefull. Nobody considers tem being dangerous weapons like some folders, but really neat little tools.

The Cadet is a great SAK no doubt but I do miss the backtools.  I'm more likely to carry a Sportsman.  That said I have my Cadet with added scissors in my pocket as I'm typing this.  :)
