Fenix TA21
on: July 01, 2009, 08:52:59 PM
After the recent 'too many options' thread I thought I'd share some pictures of my Fenix TA21.  Picked it up from the post office today and I'm quite impressed.  Its a little top heavy (the head is HUGE compared to the body), but packs a punch and has good runtimes to boot.  Its bigger than my other 2xCr123 lights.

I really like the selector ring - you can choose the exact amount of output you want before turning on the torch.  The 12 output modes and ring selector act a bit like a Nitecore-style ramp function, but the ring selector allows you to choose your light level faster and/or before the light is switched on.

Enough talking, onto the pics.

Some size comparisons, next to a Nitecore D10 and an Olight M20

And next to a SAK Ranger

Close up shots of the selector ring.  Every third output mode is marked with Roman Numerals, allowing you to accurately select your output level before you turn you torch on.  Modes I to IX are ascending continuous output whilst X, XI and XII are strobe, slow flash and SOS respectively.

Some more detail of the OP reflector

And a final parting shot

I hope you like the pics.  I can't wait to try this light out once it turns dark :)

Great shots mate, although it rather looks like Lovecraft monster has grabbed it in the last pic.  :D

I may have to eat my words a bit.  The UI seems to suit a large number of settings and the fact it's mechanically rather than electronically set I rather like.  I'm still not convinced I would ever need 9 light levels but I suppose you can play with it and decide which ones suit you, while other folks might have different preferences.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

When you rotate the ring, does it have detent to tell you level by feel? Or do you have to look at it?

The ring give a quiet audible and palpable click between levels.  Its fairly stiff, providing just enough resistance to prevent accidents, but it isn't too stiff or difficult to change levels when you want to

I wonder what do they mean by mechanical ring, if that means it makes connection mechanically it would probably susceptible to water or mud infiltration.

Cheers everyone :tu:

About the ring - it could be susceptible to water, I'm so willing to test it out just yet :)
CPF might have someone more willing to abuse their light to find out.

I'm really starting to like the ring selector.

Great shots. I like the look of the head of the TA21. Very aggressive looking. I always liked the selector ring for getting to different levels.

I have the TA30 (and should really post my review...but uploading images is a pain in the @ss)

The reason why the head is some damn huge is that it has that fancy shock absorbing thingymabob in it! Try tapping the glass with your knuckle and you can feel it vibrate :D

I'm a big fan of the selector! The UI is perfect for old Neil :P

Most likely ;)  I'd want it on something a bit smaller and non-lithium powered though.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Unfortunately I left it in the UK, so my main thought right now is "damn, I miss my TA21"  :D :D

From the little I used it in the UK I was quite impressed.  A few too many output modes but the selection ring made it easy to get to the level of light you wanted.  The output and beam were good and it certainly ticked all the boxes for an EDC light, but it was a little big.  The pocket clip was nice, but the light was longer than most of my pockets were deep :D.

Good torch, with some nice features, but not really worth the extra £/$/pesos over something like the TK10/11 for most people I wouldn't think.
