on: October 26, 2009, 10:07:41 PM
I've tried to fight it, but over the course for the last 6 months or so, I've become a true Jamie :-[

I now actively desire torches ::)

I'm still coming at the issue a different way from most folks in that I'm more interested in run times and consumption, but I have nonetheless fallen to the dark (light :D) side :-\

So please welcome me brothers :D

Well I'm looking into cheapish keychain AAA as well at the moment for edc :)

I've got a LD01, which while a fantastic little light, is just a tad too big for a key ring torch imo :-\

John's sending me a Arc (thanks mate :tu:)  which will become part of my work edc, but I want something for my home edc too :)

Its these darks nights drawing down on us Mike, no need for (much) shame ;)

I'm really getting on with my ITP A3 EOS for drop in your jeans pocket carry.

    * Cree 7090-XP-E Q5, life span up to 50000 hours
    * Operating voltage: 0.9V - 3.0V
    * Uses 1 x AAA, 1 x Rechargeable NiMh AAA, or 1 x 10420 (due to the small body size, 10420 batteries are not recommended since they may cause the light to become hot very quickly).
    * Dimensions: Length: 66.5 mm , Diameter: 14 mm
    * Color: Natural
    * Weight:: 9 g without batteries and keychain
    * Illumination:
          o Standard Edition: Single output level – 80 lumens (55 minutes runtime)
          o Upgrade Edition: Three output levels - Medium 18 lumens (4 hours) -> Low 1.5 lumens (50 hours) ->-High 80 lumens (55 minutes)
    * Superior heat sink that disperses heat to protect LED and electrical components
    * Orange peel reflector for flawless beam.
    * Mil-spec: MIL-STD-810F

So I reckon you'd like it :tu:

I used to be a bit of a light freak, but for me once I got the combo right (as I feel I have now) I just loose all interest in getting any more.  I'm certianly not saying I will never buy another, but unlike knives where I am constantly on the look out, these fill a need and pretty much that's it.

Mike, the lights you currently have are transportable right?  Why not carry them with you  :pok: that way they are good at work AND at home.  :D  I have 2 lights that I carry and they are the same all day, I personally don't vary between work and home.  Get the light right and it'll be good at both.

Another good option for a very versatile AAA flaslight its the new 4/7 Preon. Ive ordered the titanium Preon II + twisty tail but Im waiting for spare multi colour bodies to test combinations :drool:

BTW, specs are:

Preon 1 (1 x AAA)

LED: CREE XP-G R5
Max Output: 70 Out-the-front (OTF) lumens
Material: Type-III Hard-anodized Aircraft-grade Aluminum
Battery: One AAA
Seven Output Modes:
Low: 1.8 OTF Lumens, 23 hours
Medium: 8.5 OTF Lumens, 6 hours
High: 70 OTF Lumens, 0.8 hours
Strobe 1.6 hours
SOS 2.4 hours
Beacon (Hi) 8 hours
Beacon (Lo) 40 hours

Length: 2.95 inches
Diameter: 0.55 inches
Weight: 0.5 ounces

Preon 2 (2 x AAA)

LED: CREE XP-G R5
Max Output: 160 Out-the-front (OTF) lumens
Material: Type-III Hard-Anodized Aircraft-grade Aluminum
Battery: Two AAA (included)
Operating Voltage Range: 0.9V-3.0V
Seven Output Modes:
Low: 2.2 OTF Lumens
Medium: 22 OTF Lumens
High: 160 OTF Lumens
Strobe
SOS
Beacon (Hi)
Beacon (Lo)

Those are are actual lumens measured out the front of the light (OTF) meaning you cant compare with usual LED manufacturer ratings (to get led manufacturer ratings just multiply OTF by something like 1,4 to 1,6).

I'd be very tempted to order a Preon 2 if it were not for the fact I'd get slammed for tax and "handling fee" as it came into the country  :-\

Same problem here. Its random checking. Today I have a tax note on the Nitecore D20, just two weeks ago received my Eagletacs without "tax notes". Lets see what will happen with the Quark Ti (hopefuly this week) and with the Preons :think:

Well, it looks like I'm late...  I would definitely recommend the ITP EOS or Maratac AAA if you want a "cheapish" AAA.

I personally like the Maratac better because of the grippy knurling, but if you want keychain carry go for the ITP.  I will be getting a Maratac AAA stainless in the mail today!

The problem is my work stuff can get pretty bashed up and dirty, which is fine as there user's through and through :)

But it's nice to use different stuff at home, knowing you won't have to wash your hands every time you use it :D

+3 on the ITP A3 EOS.... loving mine although the clip is a little flimsy and I wouldn't trust it alone. Mine's on a chain on my pants.

I have used http://www.flashaholics.co.uk/ for that and other stuff and their service seems very good so far.
You cab also get yourself a nice 8% discount for using the code CPF (I'm a member over there). Sorry if this it making it worse  >:D

Mike, do you use NiMH in everything now, or do you still use a few alkalines?  If you still use a few alkalines, it's good to have some "battery vampires" around.  Battery vampires will "suck" every last drop of energy out of your alkalines and will still work on batteries that seem dead in other devices.

You already have a AA vampire--your Gerber IU.  The Fenix E01 and the ARC AAA-P are examples of AAA battery vampires.  I keep the worn-out AA and AAA batteries from things such as Television remotes, etc. for use in these.

But yeah I've noticed that the Infinity will pretty much use any apparently dead battery :tu:
