What is this, and why is it laying on my desk top?
on: November 15, 2009, 06:39:07 PM
As new as I am to the multitool universe, I believe that when one opens and closes their new Leatherman Surge, all the parts that were within, should remain within.

Can someone please tell me what this part is, what it does, how to re-install it, and why did it come out in the first place???

That's the piece that locks the outside opening blades when you open the tool.  Without it your outside opening blade for that side can open when using the pliers.  That tab at the end moves into the blade hole to keep it from opening.

It was riveted to the tool, if it fell out that's a warranty fix,  time to send it off.

You won't be able to put it back in. I have two Waves where that that thing has popped out or broken.

Is this going to keep happening? I just got the tool back from Leatherman, because my original surge had a manufacturing  defect that kept the serrated blade from locking. Is it just me, or has there been a spate of defects from LM? I would like to think that LM is still able to produce strong, reliable tools. After all this was a Surge, not a micra. The trade off for it's weight was supposed to be strength. I was not using the tool to do anything when this happened. I had just put a drop of lube on it and then closed it.

Not sure if this is the right thing to do but I would send it back with a letter and a link to this thread and tell them that there are alot of people watching and waiting to see the outcome   >:D

Or you could mention the Victorinox Swisstool is looking more tempting as each day passes  >:D

I don't know that it's indicative of anything myself, but it sure sucks.  Call them, explain your situation and tell them you're not happy (as you have every right to be).  See if they are willing to do more than just have you send it in again and be without your tool for another few weeks.

For what it's worth that particular part has never failed for me.  I have edc'ed a wave or a charge for the last 3 years.  It's not a common defect for that part to fall out.  I don't think it's likely to happen again.

My previous Multi Tool was an original Wave, which I had for over 10 years with no problems. Unfortunately, the Wave mysteriously disappeared. It may have been because I left it on the roof of my truck, when in Wyoming, and then drove to California. I thought that was most likely NOT covered by the LM warranty, so I replaced it with a Surge. :D

I lost my Wave this year so I replaced it with a Blast.

To be fair, the Micra is a far more reliable tool than the Surge. Just sayin' like.  :P

I'm wondering if someone took a shortcut when you sent it in last time, maybe just bent the clip to solve your original problem or something? I think when sending it in this time, I'd include a little "history" in the package. At very least that should ensure they sort it out properly this time.

Best of luck.

I thought that might have been the case, but it was the clip from the other side that broke. I  see that the date inside on the "repaired" (with the previous problem) side was 0809, and the other side is 0909. The side where the clip broke was the 0909 side. I don't know how LM assembles. Maybe the dates represent the date of manufacture of that component, not the date of assembly of the entire tool. ???? Either way, I would very much like a good, strong, reliable MultiTool.  I knbow that someone will suggest a SwissTool, but I still believe that Leatherman is capable of producing a quality product. If my next one fails, look for me on the SwissTool side of this forum.

The great thing is being able to come here and complain to people who know why I am complaining and can commiserate with me.

Well, you're right about the date stamping - that's done as the handles are stamped (at least that was the case with the PST, so I assume is for the newer tools. It makes sense).

As for the reliability of the tool, I haven't heard about many problems with the Surge at all. I think you've just been unlucky. Maybe you should include in your note that yu ae very disappointed at the performance of what is supposed ot be a Heavy Duty tool, and you'd like it replaced, not repaired.

I'm not the Surge's biggest fan by any means, but I've never questioned their reliability before.

Get a Supertool 300. Better tool, better price IMO. ;)

In fact, get both :D

While I do think you have a genuine grievance, I also think you have just been unlucky.  I'm sure LM will want to sort this out ASAP.

I am waiting for a pre-paid mailing envelope from Leatherman. They apologized, and offered a new Surge instead of repairing mine. I guess I can't ask for better than that. Great customer service from LM.

My Replacement Surge arrived today. Leatherman was very good about replacing the defective one. Because of my history with this tool I took a close look at it. The various tools all locked as they were supposed to. It opens not easily, but not like a physical fitness chest developer either. For a brand new tool, pretty good. The only issue with this one is that I have to pay close attention when I fold it up or the pliers will bind between the large screwdriver and the awl. I read about that happening and the fix seems to be to take some meat off the side of the screwdriver. I am not going to be too picky. I'll live with it and be glad that I have a working MT (finallY). :climber:

you can break a surge when closing it and the pliers jam in there. It has happened to me before, heard a pop, opened it back up and all of the tools would not stay inside the handle, the would fall open on their own.

The original Surge that I had, did not have this issue. I don't know if it's only a case of my being tuned in to reading about  LM manufacturing defects, or if there actually have been more, in the past few years. When you think what you are getting, Leatherman tools are still a bargain.
