Skeletool - My Personal Shock and Awe Campaign
on: November 20, 2009, 02:24:20 PM
Yesterday in class an acquaintance had bought a bag of trail mix in the bookstore.  He was having trouble opening it and I said I had a pocket knife.  I handed him my Skeletool, which he couldn’t open, I reached over, opened the blade one handed (Someone actually said, “Look, one handed!”) and went back to typing notes.  A moment later he’d opened his delicious bag of trail mix and couldn’t close the Skeletool, so I took it back open, closed it, and put it back in my pocket.  No big deal, right?  That is why we carry one of these things, isn’t it?  You should have seen the sheer and utter amazement people displayed over my having a pocket knife.  You would have thought someone was going into cardiac arrest and I had a defibrillator in my pocket.

Thanks Leatherman!

You know, I can relate to that completely.

Sure, these things are there for a genuine emergency should you need them, but it's the little, mundane, everyday things where they earn their keep.
I used to come here a lot.

Are you talking about the multitool or the defibrillator?  :D

Is that a defibrillator in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?  >:D

Cool story. Yep, I get the same reactions when I pull out my EDC folder for cutting what needs to be cut. Now that I EDC a MT, I'll be put in the sam league as McGyver.  :tu:

Every adult should be required to carry a knife. One should be embarassed to lack such a fundamental tool.

I'll second that and add that there is no reason a 10 or 12 year old, properly instructed, shouldn't be required to do the same.  I think a box of waterproof matches would be another good requirement.

It would great if I lived somewhere which appreciated that sentiment. Sadly our laws prohibit the common sense behind carrying basics tools and see them only as weapons.  >:(

I always carried a knife as a kid and never got in to trouble with it.

I'm amazed that people are still amazed every time someone whips out an MT or SAK to perform an everyday task. These things have been around for a while now and I would think people accustomed to seeing them.

They're true, but only if they're talking about for modding. :P  Granted, with that said, after a while, it gets to the point where even the body of the Mag no longer exists due to it being replaced, leaving you with an entirely custom light. XD  Still, with that said, those xD Maglites do have good flood. o.o;

Some people handle EDC knives like they are handling uranium, yet don't have a problem using a big kitchen knife.  I can use a knife as I would use a pen or stapler...but lots of people freeze up and get scared I guess handling a pocket knife.

Never mind not knowing how to open and close a folder...

Might be my location, but around here, carrying and using is no big deal. It hardly attracts attention.

What's wrong with mag lights?  I still have the ones I used in boy scouts like 18 years ago and they work fine.

Build quality they are very good but they just arent very bright . You take my Fenix L0D and compare it to a Solitaire , both are keyring lights and both take a single AAA battery but the Fenix must be 20 times brighter , infact its brighter then a 3 Dcell Mag  :o  Things have got better with their introduction of LED's and I really like my 4 Dcell LED .

Yeah no kidding. At my old job in a grocery store, everyone knew I always had a multi or folder on me. One day, one of the butchers came up to me and asked if she could borrow a knife to open a box. No prob, I handed her my Surge. She couldn't find the knife, somewhat understandable so I opened it for her. When I handed it to her again with the knife opened she looked terrified of the thing. She walked off and did whatever with it. Brought it back still opened and said "here, I was afraid to try and close it and have the damned thing cut off my finger" and handed it back like she couldn't wait to be rid of the horrible scary thing. All this from someone who spends 8 hours a day chopping at slabs of meat with knives the size of my head, running deli slicers, and operating the big ass table saw of doom..thing in the back room that's the size of a small car.  ???

I agree with this statement, and thankfully live somewhere where it is legally and pretty well socially acceptable to do so. I carry a Surge with me everyday, even in my university. And at least in my program (outdoor recreation and conservation) and similar (forestry, natural resources) many of the students, male and female, all carry. Even the profs have something on them, usually. I guess it helps this is technically considered a northern rural community, with lots of forestry jobs, and surrounded by ranchers and loggers alike, but come on, you must need a knife in the urban jungle too people!

I can remember some looks of disbelief when I whipped open a well worn wave as if it were a butterfly knife.  I always feel like my leatherman is an extension of my hand.

People still give me funny looks when I do that with my Surge, I think it's funny.

And..... WELCOME TO THE FORUM

Am I the first one to do that? Cause that would be a first for me too :D

I've been lurking around here on and off for a few years.  Forgot my old password for my former work email and just re registered.
I've gone from PST in the 90's through the wave and on to the charge.  Seriously looking at the skeletool CX as an EDC since it has the main 3 for me.

My well worn LM200 is always opened in that manner.  Much faster and also looks like you know what you are doing.   :D

I did have a friend try to CLOSE my loose LM200 that way!  I tried to stop him before he did it as I knew what was coming.  The knife blade has a tendency to come out and stab your middle finger.   I only did that once.   :sa:  And yes, he was bleeding after that.
