Thought TiNi couldn't rust?
on: January 21, 2010, 05:48:15 PM
A while back a got a TiNi PPP from one of the members here on the forum, it really doesn't do anything for the tool but give it a cool factor. I own a PPPD as well, both get used about the same but when looking at the PPP today I get a surprise. It seems to have little spots of rust, they wouldn't simply wipe off or rub off and I had to take a fine brillo pad to remove them. Question is, how it the world did TiNi which is suppose to be for corrosion resistance get rust on it? TiNi has an hardness of like 90 or something right? This stuff is suppose to be awesome when it comes to protecting something. Furthermore the PPPD has no signs like the coated one does, this is really really strange. I tell you guys all the time I have toxic sweat or oils in my skin that steel just simply hates but no one wants to believe me.

There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

Yea, I know when it's stainless or god forbid CARBON steel, I keep a close eye on them (even s30v) but this is a first for something ment to keep corrosion at bay. I thought I could abuse this tool somewhat and not baby the outside by maintenance, boy am I wrong. Guess the TiNi PPP is just another pretty face, or beauty is only skin deep

The reaction takes place under the coating. This picture from Benner shows the same thing on a BC/BK coated Benchmade. Note that the corrosion comes out in bubbles under the coating, this is from the relative thickness of that type of coating and the fact that it sits on the surface like paint.

I've also had similar experiences with DLC coatings, the rust doesn't bubble up like above but it does seem to appear "in" the coating. I'm curious as to what mechanism caused the corrosion. Is it just a function of the coating or was there a problem in the production or finishing? Maybe micro-abrasions allowed moisture to enter?

Like stainless steels, it appears TiNi is corrosion-resistant and not corrosion-proof.

On the surface, after I removed said rust all looks fine again. Really wierd, it was not bubbled from within nor did I see any damage after I removed it. I will be sure to keep and eye on this and maybe get in tough with Chris@SOG and see what he can tell me about their coating.

Just throwing this out there:      ;)

Chrome plate is actually porous, and over time, corrosion will get through these micro pores and look bad.

Is it possible that the Titanium Nitride coating was poorly applied- like not completely cleaned first?  Any contamination under the coating could fester and erupt.  Kind of like microscopic zits.

  :P
