reviews on the homepage, and reviews here...
on: February 01, 2010, 03:18:46 PM
Just wondering, how does the process work of reviews going from the reviews section, to the main homepage

For a while I hadnt twigged there was a separate reviews section, and thought the sum total of reviews were accessed from the homepage.

don't several tools have more than one review on the homepage?

It seems sensible to present more than one opinion on a tool.

You'd have to ask Grant that one.

But I can say that size is at a premium :-\

Ok what do you need to know? One tool can have several reviews, after all the more opinions the better. How does your review get to the main page? Well if it's considered good enough by the staff here and we want to add it for increasing the amount of views on a particular tool or it's a tool that isn't reviewed yet it goes up. I could post anything I want directly to the main site but I let it get the approval on the review forums here first. I could think I write the greatest reviews in the world but unless other folks share my opinion and feel my review makes valid points on the product and that I am not just tootin my own horn or anything. I want to make sure it passes the masses so to speak. How do you know if it's worthy? You don't and we won't know till it's posted, we may suggest corrections, adding something or what not, you never know. All I can tell you to do is, put your thoughts and feelings into words and let the words flow. Write it all down, take some pics and let us see what you got, maybe it will be a winner.

Does any of that help?

Yep, thats very useful.

My main thought was that there are often multiple reviews of the same tool on these boards, but then it makes sense that if they are all good enough, they can all be put on the homepage.

thanks for the clarification  :tu:

David is right, although I don't really like to use the term "good enough" as it doesn't really sound all that flattering to folks whose reviews were obviously "not good enough" that they weren't put on the main site.  I would like to say that there is no review here that is not good enough for the Main Site, its a matter of suitability.  Some reviews are better suited to a forum type atmosphere where folks can ask questions that are either not covered in the review or need some extended explanations.  Others are a simple and straightforward BANG- here's a tool and what I thought about it.  Other reviews are written by folks who have just gotten a new tool and are excited and not really objective enough when looking at them.  The goal of the reviews on the Main Site (in my opinion anyway!) is to provide someone who is likely to only buy one tool all the information he needs to make the right choice.

An example of this is if someone decides to take the plunge and buy a multitool for the first time, and Wal Mart has the Charge TTi, and he has heard the name Leatherman and seen some in movies and goes out and drops $150 at Wal Mart for it, only to find out when he gets it home that he's left handed, and therefore the Charge (and most OH models) is not suitable for him.  Disapointed he returns it to Wal Mart or gives it away to someone else, or drops it in a sock drawer, never to look at it again.  The next day he buys a set of Snap On Tools because multitools are worthless.  However, if he had come here first and read the Charge review, found out that they are great but not suitable for lefties, then he might have bought an ST300, SwissTool or PowerLock instead and been perfectly happy.

That is the purpose of the main site- to help the folks that aren't going to join the forum as they have no interest in the hobby of multitools, and just want to know what is going to suit their purposes the best.

You know what's really surprising?  Whenever we mention the Flair to the folks at Leatherman, they usually reference that picture!  I'll bet they've blown it up, printed it out and have it posted up somewhere!  :D
