new to forum, Australian in Germany
on: April 13, 2010, 11:00:11 PM
Hi,
just wanted to introduce myself.  I'm an Australian living in the southwest corner of Germany, on the border with Switzerland. Found the forum whilst researching for a new SAK, I'd sent my beaten up old climber back to the factory in Ibach to be reconditioned and thought I'd buy myself a new knife. Had a vague idea about one of the bigger SAKs that I coveted as a kid, like a SwissChamp. Bought myself the Cybertool41 in the end...but then it sort of didn't actually end, and I have been buying more and more models that I just had to have, I guess I'm just collecting them now. At the moment I am mostly interested in Alox models (like just about everyone else it seems). I will never amass any collection as spectacular as some of the people on the forum, but attached is a part of what I have at the moment (the beaten up old red alox is a woodsman, the nicer red alox is a pioneer, 81 and 07 soldiers, new farmer, and 2 daks).

The more I get into this, the more questions arise, the harder it gets to find answers by reading old posts. Will be posting some confused questions very shortly.

James

Hi, thanks for the welcome guys,

yeah, the woodsman is my new problem child. I got it off ebay today for 6euros. I like the red alox, I'm too precious about the new ones to use them, but I like the patina of the old ones, the used alox has real character. So I wanted this old one as something I could use as well as worship.  :)
The blade is absolutely shot, the person who owned it before me seemed to miss the toothpick on the alox knife, and tried to sharpen the blade down to toothpick size, seemingly with an angle grinder (see photos, though they are disturbing - didn't looks so bad on the blurry ebay photo :-\). So I feel that this really needs a new blade, even though it makes the old knife less authentic. I would send it to Ibach, but am wondering, can I be sure that they would modify nothing otherwise? Would they still even make a hollow rivet for the bail? Does anyone have experience sending their older more collectible knives to the Victorinox factory?

I've never sent anything in for repair (I see broken SAKs as mod fodder ;) ) but if I were you I'd email them a picture and ask very nicely if they could swap out the blade rather than replacing the knife.  I would imagine they'll be OK with it.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I've been looking at leathermans actually, big jump in price from small SAKs to a big multitool like that though, would be useful. Got to keep to the student budget. For the price of one evening at the oktoberfest though I could probably get me one of the charge ttis...that would be a way of rationalizing the purchase... >:D
