A few years ago, I came across a women at a yard sale. She told me that inside, there were some hunting knives that her late husband (Herman Duerrschmied) made for some of the local stores to sell. When I entered, I was floored at what I saw. I left with 6 of his knives with the idea that I was going to make a nice display out of them. I even got one of two special edition knives that he was in the process of making when he passed away. She had sent them to a friend of his in Germany to finish. He inscribed the blade with the makers name and a sentence to commemorate him that says "The end of an era". I was a bit surprised that she sold me this knife, but she was adamant that I take it.
At the time, I didn’t have anything to put them in, so I scoured the local furniture shops and came across a small curio cabinet that would do the trick. I then looked for ideas to display them. At one of the local shops, I came across these moose heads made out of resin. I thought that would be perfect. At another shop, I came across these small bamboo cutting boards. At another store, I found this beautiful eagle carving out of a horn. I figured this would be the center piece.
I am uncertain if I posted these photos before, but this is what the display looks like. It has been up now for about 2 years now.
(Here you see the central horn carving, with several knives placed around it on their respective bamboo cutting boards).
(The man not only made these custom knives, but also the leather sheaths. I believe I posted photos of the knives quite a while back, but not so sure if I had posted how they were displayed. I also had a pair of Inuit carvings and they look good with the general theme. You can see the two Moose statues, and how the antlers are used for display).
Well, Def’s drawer thread in the collectors area got me to make this post, as I store sheaths in one of the bottom drawers of the curio cabinet. Hope you enjoyed the display.
