Tofty - remind me, who was it who said they wouldn't get really into torches a while ago??   :D

Great work, don't post those pics on CPF, you'll have a rush of members all wanting the Ti tailcap.

Yeah, the Ti does work better doesn't it. Well thats settled.

Essexman - As far as i recall i said that i "didn't want" to really get into torches because i knew what would happen........and how expensive it would be. But the flood gates are now open and there's nothing i can do to stop it. Just as i predicted.

There's someone on CPF (moddoo i think) who has made and will soon again be making a titanium tail shroud that is very similar to this one. In fact if there were any left i would have bought one rather than making my own. I know what you mean though, some of them are like children who'll just want something regardless. I can also be abit like that as will become clear soon......

I didn't even know this thread existed. I just finished installing a drop in in my modded 1D. It's a single XML overdriven to 3.1 amps. It's a rocket. I'll get pics up soon as I can.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Buy me a small engineering lathe and I'll show you some mods :P

I am fortunate to have a Quantum 400 X 210 mm screw cutting Lathe.
I have not yet once thought about modding a flashlight.

Johan

I saw it and had to have it; The Torch Labs Triple LED P60 drop-in that produces 1100 lumens on high.

The drop-in has three modes from low to high which for an engine this powerful makes good sense.
It has to run off unprotected 16340 cells as any other type of cell cannot maintain the required level of discharge without overheating.
The surefire Z44 head has a UCLens and blackened smooth stainless bezel. The Z41 tail switch has a positive mcclicky switch and hard press boot.

I have a choice of using either a Z2 or 6P host and either the modded Z41 tail switch or a malkoff shrouded tail cap with mcclicky switch. The Malkoff is quite a bit longer than the Z41.

I prefer the Z2 but it's major failing is that it is hard to find a sheath that doesn't interfere with the rubber bits making it hard to insert and remove.

The only mod i feel i still need to make to it is add a black delrin ring between the head and body to fill the 0.6mm gap caused by the slight shape difference of the drop-in from the standard P60 and it's need to fit all possible hosts.

Time to revive this forum with some ghetto mods : LED reflow soldering using tealight candle!

Sofirn HS05 modded with a nice warm white High CRI emitter : 90CRI Samsung LH351D 2700K
0/ Removing the existing LED from the flashlight body

1/ Removing the LED emitter/chip from the MCPCB by heating the whole thing by the bottom with the tealight candle (and some flux to help it)

2/ Preparing the MCPCB with a thin layer of solder paste that will help the LED chip to stay in place during the heating process, and placing the LED on top of it

3/ Heating the the bottom of the MCPCB with the tealight candle, until the solder paste starts melting (goes from grey to shiny silver), and the LED chip aligns itself on the contact pads

4/ Removing from the heatsource and poking the top of the LED with the finger to expel the excess solder (little drop/balls of solder run away from under the chip)

5/ Resoldering the thing onto the flashlight body

The result is a nice warm white beam.

I also replaced the spotlight module (XPL-HD 5000K) of my Wurrkos H20 and the XPL-HD 3000K of one of my Sofirn SP40 with the same LH351D 2700K

Also replaced using the exact same method the Osram flat white of my Convoy C8+ with and green Osram emitter

from left to right :

Wurkkos HD20 (stock flood : LH351D 500k, modded spot : LH351D 2700K 90CRI)
Manker E03HII (stock)
Convoy S2+ (modded, Osram flat white)
Sofirn SP40 (modded, Samsung LH351D 4000K 90CRI)
Sofirn SP40 (modded, Samsung LH351D 2700K 90CRI + diffuser film)
Sofirn HS05 (modded, Samsung LH351D 2700K 90CRI + diffuser film)

That looks like some great work there.   I find it very pleasing that you are modifying a LED using a candle.  :D
