Dr. Livingstone I presume?
on: November 27, 2010, 03:05:30 AM
Just spent the last 4 hours setting up my lake Malawi aquarium for my Livingstone cichlid. Getting the water just right is a bit tricky for african cichlids but well worth the effort.

he's a bit pissed right now but will be out for his photographic moment tomorrow maybe...he looks like my avatar.

Might get a calvus to keep him company soon.

I had to google a few terms, but it looks like you have a pretty cool fish.  Are you trying to make the aquarium like the Lake by using native plants, or just calling it that because of the current resident!

Nice avatar BTW.

Nice setup- I toyed with aquariums and vivariums years ago, and always thought maybe one day I'd try again.  Hearing about your experiences makes me want to go for it!

go for it Def. :tu:

with the internet prices for equipment at an all time low and the filters cutting edge it's much easier to keep tanks now than it ever has been. I keep very few fish per tank..my 100 gallon has one jaguar cichlid...my 55 has a giant red devil and the new 20 high has a livingstone....so far. Fewer quality fish keeps the water healthy..plus the fish will kill any tankmates. ::)

when i get a house i'm getting my 1000 gallon amazon river biotope with all f1 fish.

my jag...has since he was a fry (2004)..now he's about 16 inches and stout. He's a mean sob.

and the red devil...she's calmed down a bit in old age. Had her since 2003 from 1/2 inch. She's a good foot now.

i need aquarium backers to hide the wiring but they splash water between it and the glass causing it to look like hell.

three....so far. My sister has gone all out. She has a 300 gallon Oceanic (think BMW) tank with salsmurfer fish. It has a stingray, trigger fish, spiny lobsters, gobies and damsels. It also has the odd anemone and fan coral.

i'll get pics when i go there for christmas.

This is very similar to the kind of setup I'd like to get:

I had also seriously thought about a marine tank, since I kinda wanted to get a small shark.  Of course the other thought I had was a kind of vivarium- I'd spend weeks or months building all kinds of models to a certain scale and weather them so they look like ruins- houses, tanks, cars etc, then put a bunch of geckos or other relatively small lizards in it!  :D  I thought it would look cool, like the dinosaurs had come back!

That aquarium really looks great!  :tu:

I only have very, very small tanks for my Artemia. They don't need much space, and no technical stuff at all. I had a small aquarium (60 l) for Triops, but I don't have them anymore and that aquarium isn't in use at the moment...

Very nice fish  :tu:.

I sorta got burned out on the Mbuna cichlids.  I'm back in Amazonia now.  :)

Speaking of mean SOB's, we have friends who put a lake trout fingerling in a tank. It ate all of its tankmates in short order and would thrash the tank contents.  Extremely aggressive.  Guess that's why people like to catch them.  :P
