Silver SAK price ?
on: October 02, 2010, 04:16:01 PM
Hi guys and girls, I need your expert help!

I've found this silver SAK in a local shop, they're asking £80 for it, It looks really nice and I'm tempted to buy it, but is it worth the asking price?  The main blade is marked victorinox. I'm guessing that it's a remade bantam ?

You thoughts and observations are welcome.

That is a nice piece.

Well...not sure if it is the right price...but here is what I know.

The sterling silver Classics tend to run anywhere from 80 to 110 USD. Some of the more rarer Tiffany and Co silver pieces such as the SwissChamp and MiniChamp can go in excess of 300 USD.

A little Leatherman information.

I'm a complete sucker for silver SAKs so I'm not going to comment on the value.  Lets just say that I'm a good bargainer and would try and knock them down loads but at the end of the day I would be leaving the shop with it :D

Are the scales solid silver or are they a silver layer on top of the aluminium.  I've seen SAKs reclad both ways before and you proabably can't tell without looking closely at the edge or opening the blades and looking inside. I can't make out all the marks so can't give a date that it was assayed.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Wow cheers for the fast posts guys. I guess the problem is I hate to think I've paid over the odds for anything (yep I'm tight!). But on the other hand it's a one off, and I like the look of it, so maybe I should just buy it and enjoy it!

Just without all the naff writing on the side :D

If you like it, buy it.

If its an antique type place they'll be used to people haggling.  Go back in, check over the knife.  If its all in good order and their starting price is £80 offer them £40.

When they do the deep breath intake pull a normal PocketPal from your pocket and mention that its just a reclad of a current sub ten quid model and that its only a thin amount of silver over the aluminium liners (which it most likely is).  If you're very lucky they'll cave at that point but most likely more haggling will be needed to reach a compromise.

It's in a very posh jewellers shop, not the kind of place to haggle!

Also I'm not the best at haggling, I might ask what the best price they can do is and see what they say.

It's not like you're robbing the shop, it's just a negotiation, that's all.
I suggest you to follow Neil's advice. :)

Good luck. :tu:

PS It's your wife's birthday, so go get it! And then, just after you give it to her, take it back and put it where it belongs: the drawer! :D

OK I'm back from the shop, it didn't go too well!

I asked to borrow his eyeglass to look at it in detail. With the blades open on the side of the scales I could see a crack/line running along each side.  [Thankyou Neil, you were spot on!]

"What are you looking for? " he asked
" I'm trying to determine if it's solid silver or silver on aluminium" says me
"It's solid silver,it's  hallmarked an all" he says.
"I don't think so, look at this edge" handing it back to him, " it's silver over the aluminium liners, see?"

He wasn't very happy, I then noticed that the shop was busy, there was about five customers waiting all looking and watching us!

He refused to admit it wasn't solid silver, and wouldn't take an offer as  he said  "we've had others look at it today, it won't last long"

I'll pop back mid week and see if it's still there.  :D

Saturday probably isn't the best day to haggle :D

Have you got a Pocket Pal to take along for show and tell?

The hall marks of course do show that the top layer is sterling silver. Its just that this thin layer of silver is sat on top of aluminium or perhaps nickel silver.

Don't suppose you can remember which hall marks were on it?  I'd be interested to know when this was put together.  If its recent there could be more about to show up on the market.

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

If he was all prissy and unhappy about it....might be time to spend your money somewhere else based on principals alone.

He was unhappy as I showed him that the SAK was not solid silver, which was what he was selling it as, this was done in front of a shop full of customers. I can understand why he was unhappy, he's not to know what it was, he's a jeweller, not a SAK expert!

Proper tarty :tu:

Looks to have been assayed in 2003 so I don't think we are about to see a bunch hit the market.  A good snag, even if it wasn't for yourself :)
