cheap light that would take some of the 6P drop-in units.  I've looked on Dealextreme and seen a few that claim to be able to take a 6P drop-in, but I've not dealt with them before and would like some personal recommendations.

Cheers.

Gareth,

Most definitely look at the Solarforce L2's. They'll take all manner of D26 drop-in's (P60-P90) and as well are nearly fully compatible with P and C Series Surefires. I've got three of them and some other extras from them and they are excellent lights for the money. Their D26 LED drop-ins ain't bad either.

I's go for the Solarforce L2P myself (have one) as it's HAIII caoted and matt, not shiny black like the L2. It's probably the best quality P60 out there on a tight budget. If you don't like it, I'll buy it off you  ;)

This one os $24.99 with a nice forward clicky http://www.solarforce-sales.com/product_detail.php?id=112&s=7&t=FB

Their shipping os only a couple of bucks too :)

What are you planning on dropping in to it?

Ooh yes, Lego is fun :D

If you want something with some serious clout, there are a few makers on CPF who make some great dropins, like Nailbender and Kenji.

On the budget side, you can't go too far wrong with an XP-G R5 from Solarforce or similar. You get around 320 claimed lumens from those and a decent throw too.

As others have said, Solarforce L2 or L2P - can't go wrong for a low cost, high quality host.

+1 on Lumens Factory drop-ins.

OK so I went and ordered these:

Solarforce L2 in grey
http://www.solarforce-sales.com/product_detail.php?t=FB&s=1&id=20

and 300 lumen 3 mode drop-in.
http://www.solarforce-sales.com/product_detail.php?t=RB&s=28&id=34

A reasonable start I think.  Thanks for the help folks. :)

So I got this light yesterday and first impressions were good.  The build quality is fine, if a touch rough around one or two edges, but absolutely nothing to complain about given the price.  Reasonably solid feeling reverse clicky switch and the anodising is well finished.  All good so far. :tu:

I popped in the LED etc (couldn't be easier) and unwrapped a couple of CR123's.  Oh dear.  The light from this thing was, frankly, pathetic.  :(  And it only had two modes when it clearly said it should have three.....

.....when did I buy those cells anyway? ???......Ah......

....where's my multimeter?......Ah..... :-[

So I picked up a couple of fresh cells this evening and am glad to say the output is far far better.  300 lumen is perhaps a bit optimistic but there's no doubt this is a bright enough set-up for almost any everyday task.  The three light levels are distinctly different and run high-med-low.  A feature I like is the mode memory, if you leave the light off for more than a few seconds then it'll come back on in the last mode you used, so if you have a particular mode you used more than the the others then you don't have to endlessly cycle through levels to get to it.

All-in-all I'm happy enough and at least I've got many more possibilities ahead of me. :)

Sound's like it's working for you then :)

And with 300 lumens it should make the Luftwaffe think twice about going near your house :D
