SAK dilemma...
on: November 11, 2010, 11:37:25 AM
Ok, so will be starting a new job, and would like a SAK to complement my tool kit.

http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Craftsman

Almost... I don't really want the Phillips on the back layer as I will use it A LOT and as much as I love my Wenger, the Phillips is a PITA to use, also the wood file is of no use on this job, so it's just an extra layer... so:

http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Troubleshooter

Looks almost ideal... except of course, it's discontinued, same screwdriver issue and also lose the fine screwdriver.

http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Deluxe+Tinker

Similar, same issue with Phillips on back layer... file is not a necessity, but might be useful.

I'd really like the inline Phillips like on the scientist:

http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Scientist

Seems that all models in the wiki with inline Phillips drivers are rare/discontinued?

I'm thinking my best bet is to get a Deluxe Tinker, and get someone to mod in the driver... Mr Bee would you be interested in such a project? (I'd attempt it myself, but have yet to put a SAK back together...)

So what you want is a Deluxe Climber? I've never seen those for sale :(

Everything is possible with enough bashing and grinding :D

In an ideal world tell us exactly what you'd want, forget what is and isn't available.

No, that does not mean light sabre in place of the corkscrew ::) ;)
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

What you're talking about is perfectly possible as a mod. :tu:  If you want the in-line Phillips you might also want to look at the 'Lite' SAKs:

http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Spartan+Lite
http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Huntsman+Lite
http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Mountaineer+Lite (is this close to what you were looking for?)
http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Traveller+Lite
http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Voyager+Lite
http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Expedition+Lite

BTW many congratulations on the new job mate.

Deluxe Tinker

http://felinevet.sosakonline.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=127&category_id=541a03b2b0e1b6dbd972e9f5af5ca992&option=com_phpshop&Itemid=1

Sorry, I misread. I thought you wanted to remove the back side Philips from a Deluxe Tinker (and that would be a Deluxe Climber, then ;) ).

The Lite models may offer what you are looking for. And since the inline Philips is important, how about a 111mm SAK? A Hercules perhaps?

The Explorer has an inline Phillips. It's worth a look. http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Explorer

It looks like he also wants the pliers (though he's not very clear on that ;) ).

Cheers, hope it lasts/works out. Those are sort of ok, I would like the pliers. I might never use them, but I can see where they might be useful to reach into tight spaces to pull out small jumpers etc.

No, that does not mean light sabre in place of the corkscrew ::) ;)
ideal:
Craftsman as starting point: remove woodsaw on main layer and Phillips on back layer, add inline Phillips on main layer.

Troubleshooter as starting point: Remove Phillips from backside, replace with/add Small Fine Screwdriver to back layer, add inline Phillips to main layer.

In any case, I'd rather have the inline Phillips than the can opener as I've seen combined on a few models. I'm not 100% sure about the file, and have no 5 layer knifes yet to know how it would feel overall.

Duh... Perhaps I should be looking at a Cybertool?

no it doesn't have to be 91mm... however, the large blade is probably also not needed. The small one should handle any cutting I need. so a larger than 91mm might be pointless.

CT-34

I'm impartial on the color, would prefer solid to the translucent scales they seem to come with. Solid Blue perhaps being one of my favs.

even more unique would be yellow wenger evogrip on a vic CT-34  :D

Perhaps if I put the Wenger Scales in some really good quality horse smurf I could get them to grow the extra 6mm  :P

Yes the CT range comes only in translucents but they are easy enough to replace :tu:

I love the evogrip... I'll probably take my evogrip 16 (sak-koty2007) with me... even if it's not 100% ideal.

That's a good idea.  That way you can figure out which bits came in handy and if anything what was lacking that you should look for in another tool. :tu:

Not to be pushy (but if Neil won't do it I'll do it for him), but I might just know of a mod up for sale that could be what you're looking for. ;)

http://www.edcsource.com/Inspecting-Golfer-mod,name,105313,auction_id,auction_details

'course the Cybertool 34 looks pretty good as well.  If only I knew of someone who might have some blue scales to stick on it. :-\

Personally, I'm a huge fan of the cybertools.  The driver is the dogs smurf. (Does that get past the smurfing smurfs?)

Neil's right, super easy to replace the scales (hence the Cybertimer 41  ;))

Cybertimer on left.  "Real" Vic Supertimer in the middle, Timekeeper on right

I think you should go for the Cybertool, but if your thinking about going for that Mod you should not think about it too long because it's been sitting too long and I can't stand it much longer.  I'm just dying to buy it, rename it (all real golfers have combo tool), and treat it to some good chores.  I think it's actually the perfect Mechanic, Vic should retire their existing mechanic and go with this configuration the Journeyman Mechanic.

Couldn't agree more, it just seems to be a very sensible tool selection.  I think you're slightly better at naming SAK than Neil is as well.  :D

My stab at improving the Mechanic was this:

but I'll happily admit Neil's appeals to me more.  Mine was christened the Master Mechanic.  :D
