Line Cutter Q's
on: November 17, 2010, 05:16:48 PM
Just a quick, probably stupid question: Does the serrated line cutter fit the Powerlock properly? My V-cutter was dull brand new, and now won't even cut a single sheet of paper after using it maybe 5 times cutting tape. I would rather replace it with something I can actually sharpen. Also, how well does the line cutter work in place of the V-cutter? I would prefer not to have to keep buying POS non-maintainable V-cutters, especially if they wind up being as dull as mine was from the factory.
Another important question is are they significantly thicker than the V-cutter? My Powerlock is pretty full loaded, that handle has the V-cutter, can opener, phillips, flat driver, bottle opener, and file, so if it takes up much more space it may not even fit.

Line cutter takes up 1 layer and will be straight replacement for v-cutter. It's discontinued and supply seems dry already thou.

I put one in my PL a while back to replace the V-cutter. It takes up the same amount of space. Wasn't very happy with it. It cut thin rope OK but that's it. I tried cutting a nylon straps and zip ties with it and just was not very effective. Wound up putting in a regular serrated blade. Keep in mind I didn't attempt to sharpen it since it looked like it would be a pain in a$$ to do so.  :D

Knifecenter lists the SLC as still being in stock. I wouldn't need it for anything heavy duty (most likely) but more as an extra supplement. Sharpening may be a bit of a pain, but at least doable unlike the V-cutter. At most, it'd probably be predominately used for cutting paracord, opening packages, simple things like that that my V-cutter completely fails at being able to do.

I'm concerned about the thickness, because I tried replacing it with my PE blade, but was thick enough that I couldn't get the tools out, or even close the handle cover for that matter. The SLC has to be narrower than the standard blade.

Like JZMTL said it's a straight replacement. My PL was fully loaded as well and it fit in just fine.  I see no reason why it wouldn't fit in your PL.

Sharpening is quite easy, I free handed with sharpmaker rod and it's sharper than factory (but really that's not saying much lol, given how bad the factory edge is).

hmmmm, nevermind. I was about to order a SLC from knifecenter until I got to the shipping fees. Smurf that. They want just as much for shipping as they do for the item. I can buy 2 V-cutters direct from SOG for only a couple bucks more. Guess I'll stick with buying another V-cutter. Just hope the new one actually has some kind of an edge on it, otherwise I'm gonna be peeved if this one won't even slice through a single sheet of notebook paper like the one that came on my PL.

Yeah that's the problem with small orders, shipping fee is as high as the item itself.

Don't want to discourage you, but I don't think a new v-cutter is going to be any better, not after a few cuts, it's simply the design and material.

Yeah, I realize it'll never be great, but mine was really really bad. I've read a lot of complaints about them, but from what I've been reading mine was still unusually dull. Once I have the new one, I may try and engineer a way to sharpen the old one. Someone in another thread mentioned drilling out the rivets, then using brass rod to put it back together. I'm sure that'd work, but in the long run easier to just replace it IMO. I hate the fact that I feel SOG intentionally made the things to get dull and need to be replaced often. I'd rather have the scissors really, but there's no place left on my tool to put them.
