Add a 1/4" hex hole to a Shard
on: December 05, 2010, 07:38:18 AM
OK guys, tell me if this is a good idea. Take a Shard, and cut a round 1/4" hole in it. Then using a 1/4" bit as a mold add JB to make the hole hexagonal. After curing, sand and paint. Will JB Weld be strong enough so I use the the hole to turn bits? Nothing crazy, but somewhat useful?

I guess it could work
I am not sure about the JB holding up , you could do a dry run on a bit of scrap metal & see how well the JB Weld bares up under use before making the leap to putting a hole in your Shard.
I would think you may need a hole a bit bigger than a 1/4 inch too allow more griping area for the putty

I thought the JB Weld would just fill in the spot between. In the picture red is Shard, blue is JB Weld, and green is air/bit.

For it too work I reckon you need more blue/JB weld, at the points were there is the least amount of JB is were I reckon you could get crumbling of the hardened JB    .

I think a little experimenting is needed  :pok: :pok: :D :D , see how you go with a 1/4 inch hole on a bit of scrap & take it from there  :pok: :D :D

Well, I can't do anything for about 2 weeks. Then maybe. A Dremel with go through steel if I go slow right?

I have been thinking about this idea for a while as adding a bit driver is a great idea

As said above I don't think JB would be strong enough used like this but I hope you prove me wrong! :tu:

I did try  drilling a widgy bar with a smaller hole, heating it up and hammering a hex bit through it to form the hole,
but I don't think I got it hot enough and you need three hands to do this job  >:(

My 1st conclusion was I need to drill a smaller hole and file it hex  :)

My 2nd conclusion was I could not be bothered messing around with little files  ::)

  • If at first you don't succeed, get a bigger hammer

JB Weld is NOT :-\ strong enough for that application.  it works great as long as there is plenty of surface area to grip.  i usually drill smaller holes beside what I'm filling to give the JB more to grip.  The metal is non-porous and it will not have much to hold.

I came up with another idea. Take a regular hex bit adapter, like the one that comes with the Charter Member package, and cut off a piece of it. Then glue it into the Shard.

How about taking the shaft out of the adapter and cutting a slot wide enough to slot the shard in to with your Dremal
This would be stronger than glue.... but it might end up being a bit too big for you

I think with a small amount of fitting you could use the cap lifter like on the Artifact.

I hope the Shard 2 has a hex hole. Would save me some trouble.

If I HAD to do that, it will the way I'll try... yep, nothing is too hard for the man that has not to do it.
