Chemical odor from Alox knife?
on: March 17, 2011, 04:57:01 AM
Hi,

I would like to know if anyone has experienced a chemical odor eminating from a NIB Alox SAK? The best description I can make is that it smells similar to (but not the same as) bleach.  I purchased a knife / book combo on Ebay. As soon as I opened the packaging I could smell it. I tracked it down to the knife itself inside the original Vic box. It is strong and transfers to hands or whatever it touches.

The seller thought something must have happened to it during shipping, which was obviously not the case, and sent a replacement. The replacement has the same problem. Seller said the knives had not been sterilized or anything.  Like I said they are NIB.

Could this be some sort of reaction or breakdown taking place in stored stock?

Thoughts?

Seth

Cant say I have ever noticed with my nib alox's and ive got a few. Assuming you want to keep it, have you tried giving it a good wash in soapy water?

I'd check the packaging again and see if something is not transfering the smell. Alot of packaging and man mad materials out of China have an interesting sent.  Othewise check the lubricant ont the knife.  I suspect the smell is coming from something else but the extra lubricant that is on a new knife might be holding on to it.  Give it a bath and see what's up.  Is it standard silver Alox?

Hi,

Standard silver Alox. It could be from the packaging but the source is the knife in the Vic box.  I will try washing the knife but the book , well.....................
