Another Recomend me a Tool
on: April 17, 2011, 12:46:15 AM
I have done a search,& found the choice a minefield. So am after some advice from those that know.I have had a Leatherman for a few years, but don't like the feel of it.It is just the basic Leatherman Supertool. So what I would like in a multi tool is the following:
Pliers
Scissors
Phillips(cross head) screwdriver
Comfortable to hold

These are the things I use the most without having to go back to my workshop.I know that on the Victorinox SAK the phillips head is good.
I will probably be buying blind as apart from Leathermans,I am finding it hard to actualy see some of the multitools in the flesh. The only other thing is that it will be used in the UK.Thanks,Steve

As you say there are loads of MT's that fit the bill.  A couple of basic ones that come to mind are the Leatherman Fuse and Gerber MP400.  If you like your Vic SAKs (and why not :tu:) then the Swisstool Spirit is an excellent one.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

I am leaning more towards the Swisstool, after reading about hoe the pliers have been improved on bit by bit.The only problem is finding a shop that stocks them so I can see if I like the feel of it.I am not to fussed about the weight of it.As for the Fuse,I know they are half the price of the Swiistool,as I have found the fuse with a torch for £37.99.So does the difference in price compare in quality.Steve

You can't go wrong with the Fuse :) Although as Gareth suggested, you really owe it to yourself to try out a Vic Spirit as well :)
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

When you say you do not like the feel of your Supertool are you referring to the way the older Leatherman's handles dig into your palms when using the pliers or is it more of a whole tool issue   .

New Leatherman are a lot more comfortable to use compared to the earlier models.
I really like my Victorinox Spirit X. Leatherman's Wave is a beauty too.

As to handling before buying not sure were to go in the UK  .
You could always go to the UK Meet up  :pok: :D :D. Sure to be plenty of MT's to handle there  :D :D :D :D

Spot on Matt. Its just when using the pliers I don't like the feel.As for going to a meet,it will be like a kid in a sweet shop. For some reason not many places seem to stock the Swisstool. So it might be a case of picking up a cheap Swisstool, then if I like it look to get a better spec one.Otherwise going down the route of another Leatherman.Steve

I love both the Fuse and the Spirit.  Both are great tools and you can't go wrong with them.  As far as feeling right in the hand, the spirit takes the cake.  No MT is more comfy IMHO.

My prime worker is SwissTool...

If you need scissors look for SwissTool X, regular ST has two blades serrated and plain. X model swaps serrated blade for scissors.

You'd be more than welcome to the meet-up, bit of detail here: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,22696.new.html#new

Of the tools I'm talking about here I've dug them out to give them a squeeze.  Listed best to last IMO.

1. Spirit.  With the Spirit's curved handles it's no great surprise that it's one of the most comfortable MT's out there.  Excellent quality and loaded out with more tools than the rest, but also more pricey.

2. MP400.  With all the tools being on the inside it's got a lovely smooth exterior to grip.  Should be noted that some have reported that, given the handles sit close and parallel, they can sometimes pinch the palm of your hand.  I'll also not that I've never done this myself.

3. Fuse.  Of the same form as your Supertool but with the Zytel forming the edges it's a chunk more comfortable.    I'll also note that the inside edge of the Zytel comes a touch too sharp for my taste so a little smoothing/rounding helps a great deal.

4. Supertool.  Compared to the others here it's not doing well.  However I do still think it's a league ahead of it's little brother, the PST.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.
