Hi guys! I was cleaning my tools tonight, and just started wondering, what are some methods you guys use to clean tools? Any certain cleaners, oils, or ways to clean tools? Please share any info or photos! Thanks guys!

if its really really bad and the knife won't open, I'll soak it with break free and let it sit.

if that doesn't help it, toss it out or try sending it to warranty

I was borrowing my wife's ultrasonic jewelry cleaner but it is kinda small and low powered.  I went to my dentist one day and spotted their ultrasonic cleaner.  I asked if they (husband, wife and son office) a good place to buy a used cleaner.  Both the dentist and his wife answered that they had a old unit in the garage that they did not need.  I of course asked the price and they offered it up for free!  So I now have a ultrasonic cleaner that is about 10" long and 6" wide and 4" deep.  It did not have a basket so I needed to bend some coat hanger wire to make a simple tray to hold the tools but they sure get clean.  The cleaning solution is where I am trying to perfect the mix.  I have been using liquid laundry soap and vinegar.  The soap cleans up the oil and grime and the vinegar addition makes the tools bright.  I also bought some of the harbor freight ultrasonic cleaning powder but I read a few cautions about destroying aluminum and other soft metals so I am saving it until I have a tool that is really really bad.

The ultrasonic cleaner will not remove rust but there is a product call AeroKroil that is the best penetrating oil ever but it smells like fish oil and is hard to get the smell off your hands but it works better than PB blaster or anything else.  And since it dissolves rust the ultrasonic gets a lot of the stuff off the tool after soaking in Kroil.  Kroil and the aerosol can version AeroKroil is not cheap but it works.  Check out www.kanolabs.com if you want more info.  I noticed they have a free can offer with any purchase.

A good rinse after the ultrasonic dip and I found a marine grade lube that drys nicely on the tool.  CRC Marine 6-56 Multi-purpose lube works nicely and does not smell bad after it drys.  There is a residue left behind that protects the tools but it is not stick or gummy.  Seems like good stuff and it is less than $ 5.00 per can.  It works great for cleaning adhesive residue off my knife blades.

I have learned with the ultrasonic cleaner not to leave Black Oxide tools in there too long....anybody want a poor excuse for a tiger stripe SOG Paratool?

I have some somewhat rare cleaning problems that maybe you guys can help me with.  I have a very early POCKET SURVIVAL TOOL that has bee sitting in a dresser since probably the 1980's.  It seems that there was some sort of grease used on it, which has hardened over the years.  I soaked it in oil for about a day.  This had minimal effects.  It is still very stiff.  I was thinking about boiling it in water.  Any ideas?

Not that I particularly recommend it for lubrication, but WD-40 is actually pretty good at breaking up old grease. :)
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Not that we rogues care what The Man says, but the Leatherman website recommends everything from detergent and water to turpentine to WD-40, depending on the application.

I happen to be a big fan of WD-40 (mineral spirits as a light solvent + mineral oil for light lubrication), but to each his own.
