Ax head Patina
on: August 16, 2011, 04:51:06 PM
I thought I would have a go at forcing a patina on an Ax head

The one on the right in this picture

Sanded down then
Cleaned and washed the head in the kitchen sink  :tu:

Then wrapped it up in kitchen roll and soaked it with cheap vinegar

Here it is after 12hours
I'm not sure the pictures show it very well but its a kind of patchy dull silver colour now

Probably work on Opinals aswell  ;)

Thanks Ben,

I was curious how it would turn out and how long it will take to rust  :tu:
I might leave it longer next time  :-\

I've always found with opinels and other carbon blades that eating a couple of apples and other fruits is more than enough to get a nice patina started. Somehow the image of putting a granny smith on a chopping block and braying it with an axe doesnt seem right though  ::)

Nice work feller. I hope this is one of the mix that's coming to the meet  :pok: :pok:

Yup, a good Granny Smith definitely works, as I accidentally found out with my Case Stockman. :tu:

I got to try it when my st300 was returned. Nice axe. It also has a new cover now more suited than the brown electricians tape.

No 50 foot used my leatherwork stuff. Same ( quick) designs as the ones I posted while you where at the meet. However I learned that buying things at bargain prices on eBay is not always a good thing. My new snap closers are really bad to fit.

I was at a lose end today.  A friend had an axe with woodworm in the handle so I rehandled it, cleaned it up and sharpened it. I also made it a new mask.

Now that's an interesting shaped head, very reminiscent of a tomahawk I'd say.  Nice job on the handle too.

Thanks Gareth.  I used to belong to a Saxon, Viking and Norman group. It is a copy of an axe from that period (used for kindling) Now the handle is all wrong but it is no longer used for re-enactment.

Ah, that's why it looks familiar.  I've done a bit of re-enacting and living history myself, though in later periods than you, mostly C15th and C16th.

I used to belong to regia anglorum, although I did a year or two doing boarder reaver at a castle on the Scotish boarder. I believe the period was 15th/16th cent.

That wouldn't be Dalbeattie Tower with Jeffrey Burn would it?
