My first Gerber
on: September 02, 2011, 01:49:52 AM
I received my Gerber Sport 400 today.I was looking it over and something didn't look correct. On closer  examination I noticed the was no thumb nail slot on the knife blade.A closer look found it on the inside of the blade where it doesn't do much good. Not a big enough issue to send back as I can still open the blade with no problem.I'm a little disappointed in Gerbers quality control so this may be my last Gerber product. While reading other post I see I'm not the only one that had this problem.I may try to contact Gerber tomorrow and see if they will send me the correct blade but I'm not holding my breath on that.

It's funny CG I got a X3 lot of broken Gerber MT's sometime ago that included a MP400 MT with one of it's plier tips brocken off. I just last week I finally fixed it up , man when rust gets in a Gerber MT  :ahhh :ahhh. 5 minutes to fix the plier tips 2 hrs to clean the rust out  :ahhh :ahhh.
Yep my MP400's nail nick is on the wrong side  ::) ::). It is almost a quirky characteristic for Gerber  . I think it would not be too hard to create a nail nick on the correct side with a Dremel

That is the correct blade , its just the one they fit to the current MP400. If you buy the MP450 ( with file instead of scissors ) then the blade is in the other handle and the nail nick is on the correct side .

Some of Dunc's own pictures shown here, just to show it's not just yours. :)

So not a quality issue, but rather a design decision that not everyone's going to like (or understand if I'm honest ).

Still, as a multi it's one I like and it just so happens one I've been carrying for the last couple of days.  Give it a chance to grow on you, fiddling with the sliding pliers can become very addictive, if a little annoying for those around you. ;)

I have 2 mp400 sport models. Both of them are correct. Do you think perhaps the newer models are the ones with the problems. Also since I have seen gerber start to come from china, other places I'm sure, their quality control seems to be going downhill as well :(
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

it seems like the blade is almost intentional or that Gerber really does not care if the nail nick is in a usable place I have some that are and some that are not.

I've just been playing with my 400 and realised that, despite having a blade with an accessible nick, I always stick my finger in the handle and pinch the side of the blade anyway. :D
