What do you reckon to Leatherman's new Wingman marketing stratergy?

What's a Wingman?
Wingman is my Bro!
The eighties called and they want their advert back.
Its about as appealing as a load of dingo's kidneys.
Pure class.

Out of those here who did NOT like the ad campaign, how many are UNDER 40?

Me  :tu: You think they're aiming at a specific demographic with this? What is it?

BTW - judging by the poll it might be easier to ask those who DID like it how old they are

Me, too; I'm 22. :P

I am and the 5-10 other people I asked about this campaign who also disliked it were under 40 as well.

I'm one of the under-40 crowd too. Not liking the ad transcends generations, I think. My boss thought it was one of the dumbest things he's ever seen, which is really saying something considering some of our customers..... :)

Yeah, I'm 28, and I don't like it. I would easily say I "get it", but I don't like it.

I'm 46 but I can laugh at a lot of my 7 year old's cartoons... Many of which are more intelligently conceived than the Wingman promo. I think stupid crosses the generation lines.

Under 40 and I think its stupid enough I have to remind myself that Leatherman doesn't do these.

They hire pr monkeys who think that flinging poo at their customers is high class to do these.

So the under 40, multi-tool crowd is not hot on this ad campaign, but I think they were trying to bring in  the young newbies into Leatherman with a bit of cheekiness (like Old Spice has done over the past few years).

If you disliked this ad campaign, did you like or dislike the Old Spice campaign? Do you see similarities or differences in the two? How did Old Spice hit it right, but the new LM campaign missed the mark?

This one cracks me up. "Wildflowers and shame".

The old spice ad appeals across generations and gender. A male and female watching it together can both laugh.. The guy wants to be him and the girl wants him. Its intelligently funny because it pokes fun at stereotypical desires by both gender. If just 1% of that guy rubs off from wearing old spice then its worth the $5 price.

I'm 26 and I hate the wingman ad.  It's plain stupid.  I was envisioning the awesome jet fighter wingman image with this tool and Leatherman ruined it.  They changed it into a sleazy waste of time.

Well, said.  :salute:

Accujohn, I see your point: Everyone likes and wants to be the Old Spice guy, but no one feels that way about the Wingman guy.

I am kinda with you on that mercury.  I was in the Air Force and when I first heard about the name of the new tool earlier this year the thought of fighter planes was the first that popped in my head.

The Wingman has toned himself down quite a bit.  No idea if it is a result of this thread or other complaints, but it is a step in the right direction.

I wonder if they are reading this thread.  The poll was a landslide in the wrong direction, at least for us.  If MT enthusiasts can't abide an advert, it can't be a good thing.  Most folks probably don't pay much attention to advertisements past getting the name stuck in their brain, but with the outright ridiculous nature of the wingman ad I would be concerned if I were LM's Marketing department.

It is my understanding that they have read this thread, and the other one related to WM advertising.
