J-Sews might be able to be more specific but I'd call that a 'Blunt Nosed Multiplier', the precursor to the current MP400/600 range. :)

They don't make them like that anymore.  Those were the good 'ole days of Gerber.

Someone please elaborate on why specifically this is better than the current mp600/400s

It isn't. However, I suppose if you live in an area where locking blades is illegal, I can see why someone would like the older Gerbers.

Personally, all the older pre locking Gerbers tend to suffer from palm pinch. I guess their polished stainless steel finish and heavier weight could make it feel better in the hand as well. Me, the locking versions are superior.
A little Leatherman information.

I don't know about Chako but I've never actually EDC'd a Gerber, but the older MultiPliers just feels less flimsy/more solid and more "accurate" in the sliding pliers. Personally I would rather have my life depend on a oldie Bluntnose than MP600..  :)

My wife's MultiPliers has a brushed metal finish  on virtually everything.  Pinchy yes, but compact and an elegant OH deployment of the pliers.   If she'd have let me, I'd have carried her tool possibly more than my original PST.  (I just loved the sliding pliers head  :dd:)

Ok, thank you guys! I was just curious since I had heard similar quality comment about earlier gerbers before.

I looked over this thread for a while.  To answer your question, I find the older non-locking Gerber MP's to be nice because of a little slimmer profile plus no plastic parts.  I have actually had more 'tool time' with the older models than the newer, due to the kind of work I used to do (PC Tech, cable management etc) back when the non-locking models were available.

I too like those old school gerber non-locking pliers. Of course those locking ones too are a great design too.

they all have that quality heft that gives confidence in using them.
