Hey Syph, I was cutting bread with a fully serrated Victorinox kitchen knife, and I had an idea. What if you took the blade of such a knife and modded it to fit in a SAK? Is it possible? It would be thinner than the main blade, so you would need a new thinner spring. Or you could make pen knife blades out of it.

Yes totally possible.  I would surface grind a backspring to make it thinner.  I have a small serrated kitchen one and its quite well made.

Man, that polished steel knife is downright sexy.  Something about polished metal is just so appealing.  Sure, there are a few drawbacks like fingerprints and a bit slippery due to the smooth finish, but when its shined up it sure does look great.  I hear there are some wax based products that help with the fingerprints.

Thanks for sharing and great work as always!

Edit: I meant to add this as well.  The anodizing on the Ti is holding up well.  It's been nearly a year since I got the knife and almost 5 months since I got the scales.  Starting to wear a little at the edges on the high points, but you have to look at it closely to really notice.  Not bad for daily carry in a pocket full of keys.

Another day at the beach.  Maybe I should get a house there?

Ya Id expect it to wear like alox, the edges and high points, but the color in the texture should hold on.

Syph007,  just purely out of curiosity, seeing that you have that machine now and all, would it be possible for you to make Leatherman parts?

I don't even know what  maybe blades?  Pry tool?  Marlin spike?  I don't know I was just thinking out loud.

I wanted to come up with a new scale look and Im feeling something steampunk would be cool.  So far Ive got some gear vectors that I like and Im thinking.  Maybe an old clock face where the cross would normally be and some gears and pulleys... This is just something to engrave and anodize for a different look.

Looks interesting Syph -
I think the clock face should be vertical relative to the length of the SAK - ie not at 90deg as you have it
Also agree a cog around a pin would be cool - But I guess space maybe a constraint !!

You said steampunk and I though steam train..........what about scaling the gears, adding the arm (??) to make it look like the drive of a locomotive?

Brilliant theme idea anyway  :tu:

I have a bunch of brass gears that I bought to build an actual working steampunk mechanism, but I couldnt figure out what to make it do except maybe eject the tweezers from the scale.  Or just spin each other for a fiddly hand toy...  But then if i wanted a mechanism on the shcale what can I use that is clear to cover it.  I dont think there are many options that I can cut and shape except polycarb. Plexiglass would crack if dropped.  Where is transparent aluminum when you need it.

That would look awesome.  I suppose if I solve what to cover a scale with I could put any type of clock or watch mechanism in there.

I still build alot of blue tiox super tinkers.  This has become quite a standard request.  Here the only difference is I removed the keyring from the opener layer spring.  Ground off the piece of spring with the hole and then sanded and buffed it.  It doenst even look like there ever was one now.

+1, the cross really makes it look extra professional. It's nice to see the single piece liner as well, that takes the knife another step above stock configuration.

I need to etch the scales to get the higher voltage colors and the best chemical for that is hydrofloric acid.  I found a source but havent got any yet.
