Stay Glow Scales: Love'm or Leave'm?
on:

Amici,
Since we had the "nylon vs. cellidor" poll which produced interesting results, I was curious of what members of the forum also thought about the new nylon stay glow scales that are found on some 91 and 111 Victorinox models.
What are your thoughts or experience, do these scales actually serve some kind of purpose, are these scales that just cry out "cool", or are they just plain unnecessary?
So what's the word on stay glow, if given the choice, Love'm or Leave'm?
Cheers,
Serge

I think that they are cool, I've a tinker with a set on that lives in a box and a set on my weekend carry hunter.
They do tend to show the dirt up easy but not really an issue.

I can't say that I necessarily "love them." I don't dislike them, either. But, unless you're wearing them on top of your head in sunshine all day, they don't really glow too much when you take them out of your pocket. meh!
Shoot low, they might be crawlin'

Any tool is better than nothing. Some not by much

Yeah, I like the idea of colors that are really not found in nature for scales (fluorescent yellow and safety orange primarily) so you can find the item if dropped. There are very few scenarios where I can imagine a tool being out long enough during day light to be useful for any duration at night.
So... bright yellow? Yes. Glowing? I can take it or leave it, if it doesn't actually get enough sun to glow for long at night.

I like 'em. I have a Rescue Tool and a Trekker with them. They do show dirt or grime, as one would expect a light color to do, but clean easily. The light texture is grippy without being a bother. They glow for a long time, as in from dusk to dawn. Hard to loose them in any lighting conditions because they stand out. I plan on adding more to my collection as my budget permits. Of course I won't have any luck hiding them from my wife, but...

Amici,
That pretty much sums up my feelings regarding stayglow scales. I have a Craftsman that I purchased several years ago from CVW thinking that this would be a great companion when in the field, but it only turned out to be a dud in the fluorescent department.
Personally I am temped to just remove and replace them with a pair of black or red nylon scales since I feel if I do, I would get rid of that feeling in my head that I just pulled this tool as is outta the bottom of a Frankenberry cereal box. So I vote leave'm..
Cheers,
Serge

I like the idea more than the execution.
Real handy for finding your knife in the dark, obviously; real fugly in the daylight, unfortunately. Found a Stay-Glow Camper dirt cheap, thought I'd try it out; then I realized that my EDC knife tends to stay in my pocket all day. In my
dark
pocket.
So in practice, not nearly as useful as I'd thought. Live and learn!
