Two Pioneers
on: June 29, 2012, 01:25:59 AM
One old(er). One new. One red. One black. The old one has the thicker, unpolished tools but is regular in the other aspects. The new one is from the new LE series. One made in great numbers, the other only in 50 pieces. Which one seems more special today? New and limited, or old and once numerous and mundane?

Marius, I'm sensing you have one heck of a SAK collection and you want to break us in slowly so we don't all cry from jealousy! :D

Looking forward to seeing all the other goodies you have hidden away.   :tu:

Thanks, Robert. Unfortunately, no, my SAK collection is nothing special and is not large at all, quite small actually. I like myself to look at SAK photos and this is one reason I post here, for others to see and discuss. This way I could give a (tiny) little back to this forum (really hoping I don't annoy anyone posting pics of well known SAKs).

So, which one of these two would you say is more special today? Sorry if this sounds a bit like comparing apples and oranges.

I love alox and especially old cross red alox, but I'm still kicking myself that I didn't buy one of the black/red farmers when I had the chance. If I had the choice between an old red farmer and a black/red farmer, I'd go for the black and red one. It won't be very long before all 50 are settled into more-or-less permanent homes.

I like the old cross and dislike engravings on the blade, so I like the old one better. That said, they're both real beauties!  :tu:

Thanks for sharing!

I prefer the older Pioneer.  I never really liked the newer alox shield.

Old skool for me. The red one there could only be better if it had the long awl.

Was there ever a proper white cross 84mm?  Or did it always have the shield?

I do quite like the old cross Pioneers, but I gotta say, that black LE Pioneer with the red shield is very handsome. That and the Black Beauty (Red soldier shield with black anodized scales) are two of the nicest looking knives that I've seen. Even if those were the only two in your collection, I'd say you'd still be doing pretty good. :tu:

I wish I'd been into the collecting prior to 2000 when they were still producing the old cross.  I surely would have picked up a few.
