What bag are you carrying today?

OK so it's not exactly an original thread, but I truly am a person who changes bags on a semi-regular basis.  I'm just kinda hoping that I'm not the only one on this site.:-[  So, what bag am I carrying ATM?  It's my new (and cheap)'Heavy Duty Haversack' from Highlander.

Large main section, symmetrical snap close end pockets and REAL adjustable straps (not silly fake magnets), made from cotton canvas.

Now I've shown you mine, show me yours. :pok:

Usually it's a Bergaus Munro or Freeflow if I'm out for the day :)

I'm getting a Bergaus Remote II 8+4 for  edc use for my b'day though, as it does my back no favours carrying large bags which I invariably fill with crap I don't need :D

That Victorinox is an odd looking bag; very practical perhaps but definitely odd. ;)

My EDC bag has been the same thing for almost four years now... a custom Timbuk2 small messenger.

I keep a SAK and a torch on the strap in a MaxPed Double Sheath; usually my Work Champ and my ZebraLight SC60w.  Inside I have a MaxPed EDC Micro with a few first aid supplies.

It looks more conventional when it's not filled to the rim like in those pictures, when it isn't completely filled, the flap reaches down past zippers in the front room, and it looks pretty much like every other messenger bag.

A Booq Boa Nerve S, with a modded quick-adjustable shoulder strap. Lots of organization and great build quality; I've had it for 2 or 3 years and it is like new in every aspect. My only strife is the odd shape of the main compartment that makes it somewhat unsafe when not zipped up. That said, I already have its successor underway: a custom Bagaboo messenger that should (hopefully) arrive in the next couple of weeks.

Love that bag in the first post.

Right now I mostly carry my Maxpedition Sitka, but it is not as comfortable as I would like when it has some weight in it.

My smaller bag is a Maxpedition Neatfreak, and I think I'll start carrying that again.

First I'm going to wait to see what camera I start carrying.  Right now I EDC a Canon 300HS, but I'm testing a small lens on a big honkin' SLR as a EDC and if I think I can EDC that it's need a good bag that just fits the camera without a lot of other stuff.

I don't like switching my bag up too much, but I keep different ones for different purposes.  I have a number of Grab Bags that get used mostly for work, they are just your standard Bugout style from LAPG or CountyComm and places like that.

Old photo's but not a lot has changed really ....

Lowepro Orion Trekker II

Reasonable amount of general storage in the top .. not huge, but OK

Bottom section is set up for camera equipment, but is very handy for organising kit and goodies

Not the most macho of bags, but I'm really happy with the Fjällräven “Travel Small Pouch” I'm carrying today. Perfect for just bringing a notebook (the paper kind), a flashlight and some small stuff.

Today I switched my Maxpedition Sitka I use for EDC on workdays to a Noatak for a little outdoor day trek.  It worked out very well.  I tend to pack the Sitka too heavy and it's not so comfortable for me, that might have to do with some shoulder issues from packing heavy camera gear for a number of years.

I was going to go with the Sika S-Type as my right sholder is better, but since it was only an intown 1/2 day trek I figured I should give the Noatak another try as I should able to live with the smaller bag for such a short local trip.  Just had a couple lights, ipad, some water, lighter and small stuff like that.  The main compartment of the bag was basically empty except for an insert and the Fenix TK-35 since I'd be out after dark.  The rear bladder compartment on the Noatak still fits the iPad, in fact it does so perfectly.

It worked out great; it was all I needed, which makes me think the Noatak is big enough for EDC.  I carried a small P&S camera in my light travel jacket, a Zebra SC60 in my cargo pocket, and Vic Spirit in M-Sheild on the belt; but next time I'll had a GPS or PDA pouch to the shoulder strap of the Noatak for an alternate camera pocket, and maybe keep a rollypolly handy for collecting beach goodies.  I had a couple regular bags in the pack though if I needed them.  I bought one item that fit into the main compartment until I transfered it out later in the day, but i had to move the empty insert into the bladder/ipad pocket to allow it to fit.  The main compartment is a little limiting on the Noatak if you make purchaces on your trip.  At one point I rolled my jacket and put it under the compression strap, and that worked well.

I thought the bag performed quite well, and it was easy to downsize to the Noatak when my day was simply a little city/town/beach adventure.  The Noatak seemed way more comfortable than my Sitka, but this was likely just because of the reduced weight.

Next time for a similar trek I may try the S-Type Sitka if it's going to be longer or require any extra clothing, but I'll not pack it with too much heavy stuff which means the ipad can come, but not the kindles or laptop.  I like carrying the ipad in the back bladder compartment, but that won't be possible if I have the bladder in there for a longer trip, so I have to think about something there as I'd like to keep it out of the main compartment.

Some really good news is a new Noatak S-Type should be available by Christmas or 1st Qtr 2013.  I'm thinking this might be my idea EDC bag especially if I can't keep myself from over packing the Sitkas.  Even so, the Noatak is just a little more stealth and seems better for EDC as its smaller size draws less attention.

That's my bag report for today.

Used the Noatak for my EDC bag for a couple of work days now, and I'm liking it.  Some pictures if it lasts the entire week.  This sling design definetly seems to be better with the smaller pack, but I'm a smaller person so maybe that is part of it.

I'll probably try attaching the Janus to the Noatak before the end of the week like many people have done... but I'm not sure if that would be a mistake because I then might start filling the pack more than I need to.

I think I'm going to look for my hanging scale to I can weight the pack and then set my limit and be religous about not going over as specific weight... better than finding out an hour later that it really is too heavy.

The bad part is I can't wait to get the Noatak S-Type now... I'm sure to buy one of the first ones as soon as the official announcement is made.  I think Maxpedition is a dangerous line to get into... I remember years back getting hooked on the different Lowpro pouches for my camera gear... but I think maxp is worse because they are 'multi-purpose'.

I plan to use it to organize my front pocket on my Maxped Vulture II.  Assorted gear and a few meal replacement bars.

I love those patches!

My constant bag for the last 5 years or so has been the Maxpedition Tactical Operator bag.  I have been using this bag as my main work and travel bag for a long time- it's been to Las Vegas with me three times, Orlando once, Toronto a few times, Maine once and a few other places as well.  And more torturously, it goes to work with me every day in bad weather and dirty locations, and yet, despite everything it could probably still pass for new.

I can't say enough good things about this bag.  I've had a few Maxpedition products over the years and they have all been good but this is the first one that is really useful to me, and as a result it has seen more mileage than pretty well all of my other bags combined.  Most don't last a year, but this one is still going strong without so much as a wear mark.

I am thinking about adding a double sheath for a multi tool and a folder.

Also a medical kit.

I have a notion that I want to attach them to the front of the bag.

The Spec Ops Pack Rat worked beatifully. Organzed the gear up there rather nicely.

I might move some stuff in my Neatfreak then put my EDC organizer into Neatfreak.

The Noatak is working out well for EDC, so I thought I'd try it for a short trip this weekend as well.

Attaching a small pouch to the shoulder strap for quick access made the pack look too combat-military for EDC so I removed the pouch for work, but attached it again for my weekend trip so I'd have a quick place to put the camera when I needed both hands.  I removed the security buckle from the pouch though so it is now just a velcro pouch.  the buckle is just too large for the pouch a simple button down would be a better security closure for the pouch.  For easy removal I switched the tac-tie to a speed-clip.

I did attach the Janus to the top section of the pack at the front using two 5" tack-ties. You can use the short extension from the Janus weaved through the loop at the top of the pack, but I didn't like how floppy that was and that buckle was just way too big, so I removed the extension all together.  Of course you could attach it to the shoulder strapwith the extension, or simply weave the existing shoulder strap through the loop on the back of the Janus, but I didn't care for either of these options for work/EDC carry so I made it look more like the Sitka.  The Janus pouch only as a 180deg zipper and the integrated top pouch on the Sitka has a 270deg zipper which works a lot better; especially if your trying to get into the pouch with the pack slunk around on your chest. The compression strap gets much more in the way with Janus and only a 180deg zipper.  The Janus also interfers a bit with the zipper on the lower pocket because there is not much clearance between the pouches; this seems OK though.  I didn't put anything in the Janus as I was not pressed for space right now, but I'll leave it attached and see if it gets used because removing it will be a pain.

I really didn't have much in the pack; a few flashlights my iPad to test cellular coverage and some network switching, and the rest was room for treasures if I found any.

Outdoors I never really knew the pack was there, so when it's not loaded it's really nice.  I had to duck under several fallen trees and make my way through some brush and the pack never got hung-up on anything or in the way at all; I really liked that.  It really moves with you.

On the reverse picture you can see the little black pouch which is the Skinth M-Shield clipped to one pal loop and pushed under another.  Seems to work well I retrieved my Spirit from the pouch without removing or swinging the pack around.  The snap heads are a little scraped up, looks like they contacted drywall at some point.  Another reason I think they should have a cover sewen over them.  I'm watching it close as it does not look the most secure, but I did some tests and I think for my use it will be OK.  I'd really be crying though if I were to lose it.

On to week-two with the new setup.

All my bags come from Victorinox.
I use a Vic Trevi as my work bag, everyday.
A mono sling (the round one, now discontinued) is my everyday bag when not at work, all year around, day and night, almost 10 years now.
A backpack for non professional travels and outdoors (mainly amateur astronomy on the mountains).
All are black.
I have another haki backpack from Zurich airport, with the red and white cross emblem. I use it when I need a second one.
None of them has ever been without a Swisschamp in, except during air travels. They are great gear.
