You're looking, these days, for a carpenters hatchet. Probably a half hatchet. An ace shouldn't be used for hammering metal, or any heavy hammering at all. It will open the eye, and loosen the head, probably irreparably. Hatchets have a hammer on the butt, and a straight handle. Many are chisel ground with a flat or square bit.
