What is the difference between and old 6 layer Champion with a phillips and an old pre pliers Craftsman?

Sakwiki is your friend:

Champion: http://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Champion

Craftsman: http://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Craftsman

So basically some difference in the back mounted tools.

If it has a fine screw driver it has to be a Craftsman?

No. Long nail file is the main difference. There are older versions of the Craftsman that pre-date the fine screwdriver.

6 layers w/ LNF = Champion
6 layers w/o LNF = Craftsman

Both were very similar. The basic difference was that the Champion had the magnifying glass & the inline Phillips while the Craftsman had the Phillips on the reverse. Otherwise they both had the same 12 standard features of most of the 91mm SAKs plus wood saw, metal file, scissors, fish scaler and, when they became available, the fine screwdriver, hook, & chisel on the reverse.

I think GigaHz is talking about pre-74 Champions with the long nail file, not the post-74 version with the magnifying glass.
