Care to guess?
on: October 27, 2012, 05:36:14 AM
What do all  four of these S.A.K's have in common?   ??
Yes, ALOX maybe correct, but that is not the answer I am looking for. :D
Good luck, I will not let this link go more than 1 day.

Great reply, but not the answer I am looking for. All of these Soldiers were in the Swiss Army. That is why they have the WK acceptance stamp. Please try again.

Easy.
1) They all have been used a lot
2) They all come from Noah's time (or was that the Crusades era?)
3) They all were red colored at some point (not sure about that)
4) The all signed a photographing agreement
5) They all are proud Swiss in Nationality
6) They all have a main blade
7) They all share the same owner

I can think some more.

It seems unlikely (due too the different shields) but were these all issued in the same year?

How about one of these:

- All of them are Wengers.
- All of them are Vics.
- None of them has a year stamp.

In 1977, both Wenger and Victorinox switched to the newer style, silver Alox scale. The red shield on the front scale is now the most recognized soldier’s knife known to the world. . This 1977 soldier’s knife is the Model 61, variant 3. The Swiss, being very frugal, do not waste anything. Now with every model and variant change to the Soldiers knives, you are looking at “older parts” and “newer parts” being used to fill the Swiss Military orders. It is these misfits that make collecting S.A.K.’s a nightmare or a delight. <===========

lanyard ring

Soldiers never had the lanyard ring.

(Image removed from quote.)

First one has a bail, not a keyring, the second one was never issued to the troops and the third isn't the '61 soldier discussed.

The "lanyard hole" in these four from the OP, the hollow rivets, were used for rifle sights adjustment if i remember correctly, not as an attachment point.

Lanyard holes were used to kill people. All you had to do was add a string and you were in business. SORRY there was no prize.

Now that I have your attention, I am asking for your help to address the injustice dumped upon these poor knives. From 1977 until 1979, you will find them mislabeled. Let’s look at what the greatest authority in soldier knives had to say. (von Horst A Brunner)

?1961 Variant 3
In 1977, the variant 3 was released to the Swiss Armed Forces. This knife has the newer aluminum scales that we are all familiar with. This red shield replaced the large flat Swiss cross that was on the older style scales.  The square for the control mark was moved to the other end, closer to the hollow rivet. This acceptance square is a lot smaller and required a different stamp. This stamp has the K+ was inside the W. ?

There are many websites out there that list the new “Red Shield” as first appearing in 1980. So keep your eyes open and your guard up. You will be surprised to find who has mislabeled these poor unfortunates.  Let’s go out and give them our attention and the respect they are due.

Jump to 26:08 and have a look at the year for the Victorinox model 1961, variant 3. The label should read 1977. What does the factory label read?
