Where can I get plus Scales?
on: January 17, 2013, 10:54:20 PM
I'm looking to upgrade the scales on my climber and Fieldmaster to Plus Scales. Any recommendation where I can find a complete set? I looked on eBay and found just the scales for $10 but the pen, pin, tweezers, and toothpick would be an extra $7 or so. $17 for scales seems to much for me. Any help would be appreciated.

$10 for the scales alone isn't bad really.

Rotokid may have some but I'm not sure if he's up and running at the moment.

I got in touch with sakmodder@gmail.com.  I got two sets (two knives) for less than $20.00USD (included postage) (including one pen (I had another) and an Authentic Vic SA Straight Pin).

They arrived pretty quickly despite having to cross the border.

(If I were to do it again, I'd skip the pin)

If you can't fix it with duct tape, a hammer, a screwdriver, bailing wire, zipties, or a Swiss Army Knife, it's broken and irreparable.

I just came across his regular site and was thinking about ordering some. But you're saying there is a chance he may be down?

I have no idea why there seems to have been such drama finding a bloody pin! ::)

Dressmakers pins are extremely cheap and ubiquitous and do the job. If you want to pay silly money for a Vic one, go right ahead, but it's much easier to be nice to someone with a sewing box - sorted :D

I believe that the Vic pin is stainless steel, as compared to chrome plated steel for sewing pins. If one isn't worried about rust, or you wish to magnetize the pin to use it as a compass needle, then a sewing pin is just the thing. If rust or authenticity is a concern, then the genuine pin is the way to go.

Pretty much any regular dressmaker type pin work just fine there in my experience. Never had one rust and never did really care to be in stainless steel but if the standard Vic ones are then I must have benefited of it since I tend to keep the original parts. Personally I won't pay for one such pin as a SAK accessory/part.

If it rusts you might throw it away and put another one.
I have a question to make; where can somebody buy special scales? Horn, stag, Stayglow, emerald Transluscent, Sterling silver, soft ruby, mother of pearl or abalone, rosewood or hardwood and such?

The better scales used by Victorinox on 91 mm, such as Rosewood, Ebony, etc were never sold separately and won't work as well on regular lined SAKs. All of my SAKs that come in such scales have them mounted on thicker exterior liners and usually all glued on. The only non-plastic scales that I found out to come mounted cheap, like the plastic ones, maybe with a tiny bit of glue over the rivet ends, are the Hardwood and the more recent Beli and Nut Noce (walnut). More, the Staghorn scales are not mounted over the rivet ends/bushings like all other scales but with the pins through and penned over, old style (and on heavier/thicker liners still).

So your best bet would be custom scales.

Thanks.
Is it possible to switch scales between two different SAKs? Are they destroyed around the bushings when removed?
I've only removed scales from a 58mm so far and it seems I could put them back again if I wanted to. Is it the same with 91mm?

Thanks for correcting that...  I wish there was an advanced edit capability w/this forum.

I've been able to remove and replace my knife's OEM scales a number of times without significant damage to the scale.  That said, My first time removing scales caused some damage to one, and it was a little loose (so I went to poster putty to fix it down, and it worked fine for years).

I bought a pile of Vic pins a while ago and still have not gone thru them all.  I think they run about a buck a piece but they're very good quality.
