When I thought I'd lost my black Climber recently, my dad said I could have his unused SAK that had been in a draw since he bought it. He handed me a red Climber - cool I thought
. Until I opened it and found some unidentified substance has got into one end and the small blade seemed to be corroded into place
.
It looked like the aluminium liner had corroded slightly jamming the blade. Using my somewhat sketchy knowledge of chemistry, I remembered that sodium hydroxide dissolved aluminum oxide and that I had some NaOH crystals... I made up a solution of the NaOH and while it was still hot (it does this itself
), I poured it into the end of the SAK and was surprised at the steam and vapour that appeared when it hit the aluminium. After a few seconds I rinsed it out and dried the knife on radiator for a few hours.
After a sparing lube with mineral oil, the knife is as good as new!
- Or was I too preoccupied with other thoughts, like: if toast always lands jam side down, and a cat always lands on its feet, what happens when you strap a piece of toast, jam side up, to the back of a cat?
