Sad day when you loose a tool
on: July 16, 2013, 01:04:32 AM
OK,  so I was just going to the movie theater with my oldest son, but I decided I needed to take a SAK and a leatherman.

I put the SAK super tinker in my front pocket, and I put a leatherman Wingman in my back pocket using the pocket clip that is provided.

during the movie I went to get out the Wingman, and it was not there!  after the movie, I used the flashlight on my phone to check under the seat.  nothing there!   there was no one sitting behind me, and I checked my car, and house for hours.

I guess I am down one Wingman  (I bought 2 at $19 each)  of all of my tools, I am glad this is the one lost, but it still hurts.
I am baffled  on how this could possible happen.

Are there any times that you lost a tool that you would like to share (as therapy)

Years ago I lost my Super Timekeeper in a hayfield. It was my very first SAK and carried it for years. I still miss it.

I know I am lucky that it was a cheap tool (relatively) that I lost, but it still sucks!  I bought that tool about 3 weeks ago.

I am just glad it was not one of my favorite tools like my Surge, ST300, etc, etc, etc.

When i was in my late teens, I had a small Buck knife. I used it occasionally to clean deer, but not so often that it was all that necessary. I ended up trading my oldest brother for a mini maglite he had, as I was doing a lot more camping at that time, and thought it'd be a lot more useful. The Maglite was a camo pattern (welcome to the late 80s!).

First time I took it out, it was dusk, and we were standing on a hill, in heavy leaf clutter. Yeah, you can see where this is going. It slipped from my hand before i could turn it on, fell into the leaves and rolled, some unknown distance. About 15  minutes of searching came up empty.

I am sorry to say I laughed at this story.     I think it was the vision in my head of an "off" camo flashlight being searched for.

I feel your pain, and I am sorry.

I only continue to tell it because of the irony. I find it amusing myself... in retrospect.

My first multitool lose was my first Gerber multitool when I was in the Navy.  the day I got it, my chief said that "you always need the right tool for the right job" and took it from me, said "this is unauthorized" and threw it in the ocean.

later that day, he found out it was issued to me as a safety device for when I was working aloft.  needless to say within 24 hours, I had another one.

All of your flashlights hi vis with led beacons now?

Mine would be something easy to find, (remember the old whistle key finders?)

so sorry to hear about this detron, I'm sure all of us had to file a hurt feelings report (and repeatedly in the case of others).

good to hear it's not a Wave, Surge, MUT, etc...
Cheers,
Gabriel

Thanks, I too am glad it was not my Surge, and of all my tools,  I cannot think of a tool that I would have rather lost,   but you are right,   it still sucked

I lost my first Swisschamp (no hook) many years ago, exactly in the same way. You'll replace it, I'm sure.

I have yet to lose a tool in the 'modern era'. Knock on wood!

When I was a wee lad I had a SAK and a Gerber multi-tool that I, of course, lost over time whilst getting radical in the woods. I would love to still have those as I'm sure they'd bring back a bunch of memories.

Oh well.

i had a boy scout knife my mom got me when i was about seven, after a lot of loud complaining that girl scouts didn't get knives like my brothers.  i lost it once for about a year and found it in a friend's yard, rusted solid.  that was the first time i ever cleaned up a knife and i wish i still had it, no idea where it ever went.  i've lost a couple of SAK's and for some reason, most every needle-nosed pliers i ever own, but other than that i have managed somehow to hang on to most of my tools.  what i really hate is when someone loses tools to theft, like the whole toolbox or something.  i've seen that happen a couple of times to friends and usually they almost always lose a father's old tool or something they REALLY wanted to keep and couldn't replace.

I can see you don't appreciate the fine line between camo for items that are meant to remain hidden and camo as a fashion statement.   :P

It really does suck to lose anything let alone a MT. I always look on the bright side and enjoy the search for the replacement. I am a closet shopoholic though
