Victorinox Spartan Built from Start to Finish
on: August 31, 2013, 02:25:23 PM
I couldn't find a specific sub-forum where I thought this thread would fit so I put it here.  Apologies in advance if there is a better place.
Victorinox sent the tools and parts from Switzerland to the US to build Spartans.  The idea is, you purchase a Spartan and watch it being built.  According to the store manager, the only place this is being done is at the Victorinox store at Mall of America.  He was kind enough to let me film the entire process.

He said that they were initially shipped a bunch of different scale colors but that they hadn't received a resupply from Switzerland.  They are almost out of supplies to build the knives, but they are expecting more.  It was a really neat process.

That has been discussed before here, but that's OK, it's a very cool process. I would love to build my own Spartan!
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.

There was a post from someone with pictures of one in the UK Vic store. Tempting to take some parts along and ask if you can make a custom one!

That's a pretty detailed video, a little more than the previous one I think.  The guy call the rivets 'pop-rivets' which made me cringe just a  little.  I've never seen anyone 'hammer' the liners down like he did and there seems little need for that.  I usually see just a firm press and maybe the slightest tap in Vic videos from the different shows and their factory.  Don't know why the video edited out the early what he called 'locking the rivets' stage.

I left out the locking the rivets part because the first time he did it they went all over the place.

Hey that machine is cheating... lol.  Im faster, but Ive had more practice.  I'll make a video to show how I do mine.  Its really pretty quick.

I cringed when I saw him hammer the brass into the bushings.  You can cheat and do that on 2 layers, but try that on a wider one and the pivot will bend inside.  It must be peened to form a proper head and not compress the body of the brass pin.   :tu:

I still wouldnt mind one of those machines though....
