need help identifying an old SAK
on: September 03, 2013, 06:07:10 AM
disclaimer: even though my first knife ever was a Vic, I don't know SAKs as well as I should.  I spent hours as a kid looking through the Vic catalog, trying to decide which one I would save up my lawn mowing money for, but never did.

This knife was found in some of my grandfather's stuff (may he rest in peace... he passed away several years ago), and I could use some MTo help in identifying it.  I'm pretty sure it's an old Vic, but I don't know for sure.  The pics will describe it better than I can.

thanks in advance!  :salute:

That's a 91mm Standard model made by Victorinox for their economy Elinox line in the mid 1970s. This particular model has a thinner 2.2mm blade, ABS scales, and a pot metal corkscrew that breaks easily (don't use it). At the time this was made it may have gone by the name Scout or Camper. The equivalent model today is a call a Spartan.

It should be noted, however, that while the Spartan has a nearly identical tool selection, it is much better quality than this and its corkscrew is quite usable.

And the Spartan looks lovely in black.

thanks jazzbass; that's exactly the info I was looking for.  :salute:

I'm pretty surprised to find something from an economy line in his stuff though... he was a true outdoorsman, and had too many Vics and PSTs to count.  This was the only one I didn't recognize; probably because I was unaware of the Elinox line.

thanks again!
