EDC Light?
on: June 01, 2008, 03:08:43 AM
What light do you EDC and why?

I carry a Maglite AA LED and a Solitaire on my keyring.  I got the AA LED on a clearance sale for $10 and the Solitaire was a free gift for completing a survey.  They are both reliable and the AA gives me the right amount of throw and flood that I need for work.  The Solitaire leaves some to be desired in the light department, but it was free and is much better than nothing.

At present I EDC my L2D Q5 but I am looking for a shorter light with the same lumens to replace my L2D. I intend to use my L2D during night party at the beach, camping in the rural areas and during extended blackout. I might get a P1D Q5.

Who owns a P1D? Does it actually delivers 180 lumens same as L2D Q5 on turbo mode? Thank you.

While working I have a Streamlight Stinger on my duty belt. That is one of my favorite flashlights. But, I have a lot of flashlights and I like to change it up a bit! When I'm off duty the light I carry the most would probably be the Streamlight 6P LED!

I use flashlights from Vortex. On work I use the Vortex TC3, it's perfect size and I love the design on it. At home I have the DR3, now this is a light I really love. The TC3 is a light with a big flood and short range (150 meter), it's a tactical light. The DR3 has a nice concentrated beam and a long range (1200 meter).
There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

Right know I have been choosing between a Surefire E1b, E2D Led and a Fenix P3D. But these are the one I usually pick from

I have the original P1D CE not the Q5  and it plenty bright. I don't have a L2D Q5 to compare it to. But considering how small it is it has to be one of the brightest lights for it's size that I own.

Eddie, why not just buy a P2D body and tailcap and use your L2D head?

The P3D would be the brighter of the two.

I am about to get either a P1D Q5 or a P3D Q5 and I want to know if there is a very noticeable or a big difference in brightness between the two. Thanks Prime.

Both the turbo and the high please Prime.

I like the P1D because of its size, I also like the P3D because it is brighter. If the difference in brightness in not a big deal, then I will opt for the P1D. Thanks again.

Give me ten minutes Eddie and I'll try to get them done for ya. You have to keep in mind that my P1D and P3D are the original Cree models not the Q5s so the one you choose will be slightly brighter.

Ok Eddie here you go. The P1D high is close to the P3D high. Of course the P3D will have the much better runtime. Also the P1D CE has High,Turbo,Low modes while the P3D has a medium as well as Low, High and Turbo.

P1D high

P3D High

P1D Turbo

P3D Turbo
I hope these help Eddie and don't make things more confusing.

ed bro, if we're talking of EDC, I would suggest you pick a smaller and lighter flashlight. You have already a L2d with 180 lumens. That's bright enough. I think if you EDC a P3d, with having almost the same size as your L2d, it might be quite uneasy to carry along with your TTI and celfone. Now if your after a super brighttt light second only to tk10, go with the P3d! with 215 lumens, and yet compact!

Thanks again for the favor Prime. The P3D HIGH looks brighter to me than the P1D HIGH on your beamshots.

Teofilo, thanks for your advice. I also have to consider that.

Prime, one last question... what is the lenght of the P1D and the P3D in inches.

According to my LM Wave the P1D is 2.8in and the P3D is 4.5in.

And according to my Charge TTi the L2D is 5.75 in.
So the P3D is only 1.25 inches shorter than the L2D.

I now have all the necessary data I need to arrive at the right decission. I will let you know later, Prime.

Thank you again.

How does the overall output and throw of the E1B compare to the Extreme?

Personally, when I need to carry a light, I go with my NovaTac 120P which provides multiple selectable output levels.

Yes it does!

I am not a flashlight expert by any means, just a guy who likes small high output one cell lights. That being said, the Nightcore is brighter then the E1B in side by side comparisons, but not by much. The E1B's beam is much tighter making it a better spotlight, but for overall walking around in the dark the floodier beam of the Nightcore is better suited. I like the simplicity of the E1B's clicky switch better though, one click for high, and another for a very useful low, no twisting for anything. I do like being able to set a level with the Extreme, but I usually set it around where my E1B's is.

Thanks Mike. So would you say that if you had to illuminate something far off in the distance, the E1B would illuminate it better even though the Extreme is brighter overall?

That's a good question. I have a feeling that because the Surefire has a tighter beam, but the Nitecore has more power that they are probably about equal.

I'll do some testing tonight and give you my very un-professional opinion tomorrow. :drink:

I either carry the Fenix TK10 on my belt in the sheath that came with it, or the SF 6P LED in a Bianchi holder on my belt. The back up light is my new Fenix L1T V2.0. Always like to have plenty of light
