My 1st Gerber in over a decade.
on: April 06, 2014, 06:21:00 PM
I threw a bid out and won this on the bay. Can anyone identify this one? This is the only pic the seller had.

That would be a Multi-Plier.  Quite a lot of different versions out there so I'll be interested to see what you get. :)

Thanks Gareth. I'm more of a Leatherman guy, so this is new to me. Does Gerber date stamp? Is the Multi-Plier an older tool?

No date stamps, sorry.  Definitely an older tool, I'm not an expert in the dates but I believe they came out around 1992.  I'll do a little digging on the forum and see what else I can turn up.

That looks like a blunt nose version 5 Mr Pinchy to me, as it has the beefier blunt nose pliers, rivets instead of button head screws for the sliders, and round nut for the tool pivots.  There was also a needle nose variation (the first time Gerber offered it in their full size MT).

It will most likely have US PATENT, 5142721, 5212844, PAT PEND" stamped on the handles.

Thanks for the info! So this is one of their larger MT's for back then? Is there a leatherman you could compare it to size wise? Also, who started calling these Mr. Pinchy?

I would compare length and weight to an ST300.

That seems a bit heavy how much does a multiplier weigh? A st300 is 9.6 oz.

Na, the Multi-Plier is much more of a 4" tool, think Rebar for rough scale. :)

I don't know when it started, as it was long before I joined MTo.

It is a well deserved nickname, as you will find out if you try to cut some thicker wire (or anything else that requires significant closing strength and then suddenly gives way).  You have been warned ........

Other than that they are a good, simple, robust tool.  Like Capt'n, I would be very surprised if it has scissors.  AFAIK Gerber only put scissors on the first version (the shiny ones), or some versions of the later Multi-Lock/MP600 (a different, but similar, tool with locks for the components).

Did a search on Mr Pinchy. The first actual use of that term was used by Nikola on 06-29-12 in this thread reply #1.

A slightly earlier (02-04-12) post here:  http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,36664.msg588700.html#msg588700  buy our very own Tom.  certainly known as "Pinchy" before that, but this is the earliest reference to "Mr Pinchy" I could find.

  I'M the first one to call them Mr. Pinchy?  That's funny.  There has to be an earlier reference to pinchy on the boards somewhere.  Mr. Pinchy was the name of Homer's pet lobster on an episode of The Simpsons, so that's actually where I got that from.   :D  A bit more appropriate that I started the Mr. in common use than that Leatherman nut enki......  ::)
