What's the bump for?
on: April 09, 2014, 09:11:14 AM
I have always wondered, but never got around to asking. What is the little bump for on the toothpick from the Wenger or Victorinox toothpick? Is it for retention of the toothpick or is it some function while using the toothpick? Thanks everyone.

Victorinox toothpick.

Wenger toothpick.

It's to "clip" it under the scale to retain it in place when not in use  :salute:

Do you mean the bump on top? That one matches an indentation in the scale so it's there to make sure the toothpick won't fall out.
But if you mean the little bump/notch on the side: no idea :)

I mean the little bump on the side. 1/4 the way down from the top on the Vic and 3/4 the way down on the Wenger. Not the part you grab with your nail to get it out of the scales.

OK, no idea what the the small protrusion on the side for. It has no function that I know of, at least on Victorinox toothpicks. I doubt it's there to keep the toothpick firmly inside the scales (it's not there on older toothpicks). The "bump" on top does that. Which used to be way smaller on older knives by the way.

Just pop off the back scale of one of your SAKs. You will notice there is a ridge/bump corresponding to the bump on the toothpick.

Obviously we're not talking about the part you grab (how is that part called by the way?).

I have great respect for your different opinion, that's OK.  :tu:

To be more precise, what I'm thinking and my full opinion is that "Cap's bump" and yours bump actually keeping the toothpick nicely in place...both bumps together. So can you disagree with this one!? Just kidding, Reinier...  :D

More info on this topic is always appreciated.

I can see the little notch in the slot where the little bump clicks in through the transparent scale of my climber - It definitely adds to the retention of the Toothpick!

I just took a thorough look at five different scales. Older ones don't have that little slot. Which makes sense since older toothpicks don't have the bump. Even older ones don't have the bigger indentation corresponding to the bigger bump on the top side of the toothpick. Which makes sense too, because even older toothpicks are completely flat, no bump on the top and no little bump on the side.

So in the end it loos like I do agree after all :)

I believe you would be correct. I guess I could of answered this myself as I had a pair of scales already off a knife I could of checked, but forgot about them. Here is a couple pics. You will notice the notch the little bump falls into. Obviously you guys already figured it out, but I like pictures in case someone else reads this thread later on.  :tu:
