That was it. Greece was better according to all statistics (ball posession, corner kicks etc) except goals. We lack a charismatic offensive player and you need one at this level. Holland has two of them and I think thet they will beat Costa Rica, a nice defensive team but not as good as Chile or Colombia.

I really dislike penalty shootouts as a method of elimination.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

I saw the last 10 minutes. The Dutch girls looked very happy jumping up and down. penalty??

well done to the winners

Probably, but not as clear one as the one not given at the end of the first half also on Robben. I think Marques stepped on Robbens foot and prevented him from going forward which would have probably resulted in a goal. We'll see in the slow-mos.
Actually, if someone made the wrong decision, then it was the defensive player. He should have known exactly what the risk is.

That said, there was contact, even though Robben might have exaggerated his fall, the penalty was justifiable.

With all that critique concerning the referees I would like to remind people of this:
- Referees are part-time athletes.
- Unlike players, a referee has no down-time during the game. He always has to be as close to the ball as possible.
- Referees are not substituted when they are tired.
So, despite all the mistakes they make, I think they are doing a good job within the restrains of their circumstances. You want better refereeing the system has to change (i.e. real time video analysis, have two teams of referees and switch every 15 min.).

It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Argentina vs. Switzerland

Quote from: ask.com
What is Argentina famous for?
Argentina is known for its elite national soccer team, the famed revolutionary Che Guevara and such beautiful landforms as the Iguazu Falls. One of the most striking countries in South America, Argentina is a popular tourist destination and features a dense heritage.

and Switzerland
Quote from: listdose.com
Top 10 things Switzerland is famous for include: 4 languages, cows, Swiss guard, Swiss army knifes, hiking, cheese, banks, ICRC, watches and chocolate
Not even sailing, tennis or skiing mentioned and that are sports we rule (well skiing not so much anymore).

It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

There are also 46 high sea merchant vessels that fly the Swiss flag (they have Basel as their home-port) and there is a Swiss Navy :o

Hey, that's just not true; I'm sure I once watched England beat San Marino and I'm pretty certain we got a draw against Luxembourg at some point?

In less than 30 minutes the ref will blow his whistle ... :dwts:

I do hope that it's going to be a nice game to watch, it could be, because both teams are evenly matched, in my opinion.  Maybe Belgium has more "star" players, but the US play better as a team in my view. They will both have their work cut out for them.

May the best team win .

Most matches in this phase are among equal teams and very close wins or penalties (were luck makes the choice). Anxiety plays a role ofcourse.
Did you notice the Google Doodle about  the USA team?

Yep, it turns out to be a nice game to watch, I just hope that the Red Devils can make one of the shots on goal count ...

You don't win a game with shots on goal only  ::).

Oh well, let's hope they are saving the goals for the second half (the Belgians I mean  ;)).
